What's the best thing to do to a game's leaderboards when there's an update?
Minecraft has a pretty good example of variables for game updates, but really it depends on your specific needs
It really depends on how big of an update it is. Is it different enough that it really needs to be separated?
I was think about making a variable and setting the default value to the most recent version
@YUMmy_Bacon5 If you do that, then all the old runs will be hidden by default. Is that what you're intending?
The way it's handled at http://www.speedrun.com/Celeste works for the game. After the release date of a new patch, running on an old patch is disallowed.

Let's ask a simpler question. Which game do you moderate?
If game updates are small and don't change the speedrun, you don't really need to do anything. If they do change the speedrun, only then will you have to set things up further. I'd still set up a version variable in the meantime.
As a further example for @Quivico 's suggestion, the leaderboard for A Hat in Time currently uses this method: they simply have a variable stating which version to use, and it's up to the player to choose which version to run (and admitedly people gravitate towards a certain "meta" version).
This may not work for you in the event the latest game version patches out important glitches/skips and is the only one available at all times, but it might be a good approach to keep in mind.

If there hasn’t been an update then don’t worry about it until there’s an update.
