PAL differences

I run the PAL version of this game as i live in the UK. I know there is an FPS difference which changes the strats for certain levels, but it also seems to change things such as the one frame goomba jump in 8-1 and the 1 frame jump in 8-4 room 2, which both seem arbitrarily easy. How many frames do you have to make these jumps in the PAL version as I recommend doing these strats to those on PAL as it eliminates a pipe jump in 8-1 and is just generally faster in 8-4. Cheers

The issue with PAL is that at the end of every level with a flagpole, the flag moves down 1 pixel per 1 frame, and the timer counts down 1 point per 1 frame as well, and they have to count down the same amount as NTSC. PAL would have the timer count down 50 times in 1 second vs NTSC counting the timer down 60 times in 1 second (about) so it is actually much slower (like about 9 seconds slower if you did a run that would be as good as a 459 in NTSC)

I know that's not your question, I just wanted to mention that just to make sure that you know what the speed differences are so you may change your mind. You can switch to an emulator and play the NTSC version on that to get the 60~ FPS.

Those jumps are indeed much easier on PAL because the goomba jump you actually can jump higher on PAL so it's less precise, and the 1 frame jump in 8-4 is much easier since Mario also falls much faster in PAL as well, making you hit the ground sooner and you can make that jump sooner.

TLDR: I recommend switching to NTSC because the PAL version is much slower, you can do that with an emulator.

To be honest it does not bother me PAL is slower, but thanks for letting me know about the jumps and reason it is slower other than it just running as 50 FPS. Ill stick to PAL as there are enough people running it to make it possible to watch and improve. Plus it might be somewhat easier to get the fastest PAL time!

That should never be your reason for choosing certain versions like that. People don't care if you get a 5:10 PAL, it's still considered like every other 5:10, but if you get a 4:59 or 4:58, people actually start to care some amount and are interested. But, you do you.

He may or may not care about things like getting a lot of attention for running the popular version. Some people are in this for recognition and glory, some are in this purely for fun and some are somewhere in the middle.

The fastest PAL time should definately be much much easier to get, because FPG is easier to do, there is no crazy literally perfect 8-1 you have to do, and you don't even have to do FPG in 8-3. Fast accels in 8-4 actually lose time because you accelerate more quickly running on the ground than jumping backward (excluding the very first part of 8-4)

At least until Full FPG is found, then uh, it's would be much easier to get a perfect PAL time

I mean, I feel as though I do run for fun, but at the same time, getting the best PAL time is still a great feat, and when I get I achieve something, I want it to be recognized as such. Getting the best PAL time would be a great feat, but wouldn't be recognized as an achievement unless you very clearly explain that it is on PAL version. I feel like if you do something great, make sure you put your time into something that can be recognized properly

How many people do that? Also, anybody who adds "Plus it might be some what easier to get top PAL time!" Most likely does care on some level about what people think of their time.

I think quite a few do tbh coming from a pal country I like to see it and the pal record does need beaten its kinda old at this point. They already have pal runs so I don't think it's such an issue for them. :) You tied for 8th so you can totally push it up there good luck on the runs @GordonM27

Ok, so i do care a little about being recognised but i would rather see the whole of PAL smb1 be more recognised, it is still fun no matter what version you run, but seeing as i run PAL i am starting to get more competitive. The top time in PAL, if it gets to a high enough standard, should be recognised with the top NTSC times, but that is not now, so us PAL runners will continue to wait and push the times down ourselves. I am in no way regarding all NTSC runners different to us PAL runners, it just might be nice be regarded on the same level as people running equal times on NTSC, 10 seconds faster or whatever it is.
