Hi, new to speedruns

Hello everyone, recently i started thinking about doing speedruns but i have no idea where to start, anyone can point me out on what to do in the beginning? Do you need any kind of software (besides recording/streaming software)? What games are good when starting off (i'd like to go with pc games)? thank you :)

Belgium

any game that you like yourself is good, because you are going to have to play it many many many times :p

Check the resources page here on speedrun.com. I use OBS for streaming and livesplit as timer. Obs probably needs a tutorial to set up correctly but you can Google it easy.

Oh, and welcome!

I already use OBS for streaming so i messed up with it a lot of times already :D so how do you guys work on a speedrun? you just pick up a game and finish it multiple times untill you are so good at it that it takes less and less time to complete it? i checked the resources page but there is nothing like a guide to speedrunning (or did i miss it?)

You will need to find a game to speedrun first, something that you like because otherwise you're going to either get bored or frustrated. Starting off I would suggest playing the game through a couple of times just so you know the game, the mechanics and such. After that, if the game has an active communuity, you will be able to find out about glitches, skips and tricks from the games individual page. If the game you have chosen doesn't have much of a community, or none at all, you will then want to go skip/glitch hunting to reduce your time, and then practice, practice, practice.

Not much else to it really. I currently run Lego Batman, which is quite simple on game mechanics if that's what you're looking for, but there is only a small community for it currently (Myself and Tirean.) It'd be nice to have another person on board :)

If you pick a game where you can save anywhere you want I suggest that you save right before hard parts and play it over again and again since places like that most likely are where you can save the most time. Practice hard bossfights so you can manage with low health since many games require you to take damage instead of avoiding enemies at certain points to go faster.

Study how people already running the game do certain things and copy the good stuff and if you find some quicker way or feel more comfortable with some other don't be afraid to try different things. Depending on game it can be multiple ways to do things quick and it's a matter of preference which way feels right for you.

Most of all. Have fun. Don't pick a game you don't enjoy playing since you're gonna spend a lot of time with it if you're going serious.

One of my favorite game is the dead space series for example (but it's just the first that came into my mind right now), i generally like TPS, FPS and horror game (amnesia and outlast too). I would like to avoid using glitches/exploits, is still considered speedrunning if you don't use them?

Belgium

it'll be glitchless then, it's its own category :) if there is no category for it yet, you should ask moderators to make it.

If you run it and prefer it that way, I believe they cannot say no.

That being said, most competition will enter in the runs with glitches :)

The essence of speedrunning is somewhat to finish the games as quick as possible so the runs with glitches are often the most popular. Though as Bamz0rs say, if you prefer to run it without glitches that's ok.

True and i'm always speechless when i see you guys perform those weird glitches to "bypass" some areas, it's a unique form of skill For now i'll stick with glitchless run and see what i can do, after some research i think i'll start with Dishonored, i always loved that game, time to reinstall it and finish it again a couple of times :)

The 'couple of times' is stating lightly, I assume ;)

yeah i meant a couple of hundred times :D
