Request: Rank Points

@DiggityDingDong, great point. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but there's no need to respond so harshly. The bandwagon is one thing, but I think the main issue is poor constructive criticism.

My first post in this forum was nearly two years ago. I thought it would be cool to integrate Disqus into speedrun.com. The idea was not great, but the responses I got were horrendous and made the speedrun community seem close-minded and rude. We've come quite some way since then, but really, we still have a lot of work to do. There are ways to constructively criticize ideas instead of tearing them down immediately. Instead of acting like strangers behind keyboards, pretend the person is right in front of you. I invite you all to change your language to be a little more accepting of new ideas, because we often look rude and unaccepting to new community members, so they are less likely to stick around and share. This doesn't mean you have to agree with the idea -- just be mindful that the person who wrote it has feelings and probably would like to be included instead of shunned.

One thing that I find great for constructive feedback is starting with something you liked about the idea, then moving into your criticism, preferably with minimal negatively charged statements. It helps lessen the blow. Get into the practice of it and this forum will look a lot brighter soon. Cheers :)

Who is better? Michael Phelps? Usain Bolt? Or ZFG?

2 years late, but what was said about being biased and unable to compare different runners, there could always be a ranking system inside game genres. Of course, there is one problem I see from this. Even inside the same genre there are different types of games. E.g. Gran Turismo and Mario Kart.

The only doable thing as a result would be having ranking systems inside a game series.

Outside of that scenario, nope. And it would be something that can't be managed easily.

I love the idea of combined leaderboards and rankings and stuff like that.

I tried to do something across Streets Of Rage 4 factoring in many (not all) of the 102 leaderboards, but it never garnered much interest to justify the level of work required.

Maybe one day when I'm REAL bored or if I find a way to truly automate it (anyone will ideas, please let me know!)

@TumeK5 The single entire point to learn from this thread is that you cannot rank different people playing different games; not if the 2 runners are playing games from the same genre, or even from the same series, or even from the same game itself.

  • You gave the example of two racing games - Gran Turismo and Mario Kart. Can you compare the top runners in each game, say which one is "the better speedrunner"?
  • 2 game in the same series can be games from different types. For example, Rayman 1 is a 2D platformer, Rayman M is a racing/arena-battle game. Can you compare top runners from those two games?
  • Let's take 2 games in the same series, even with the same game type. Can you compare between the top runners of, say, "Pokemon Yellow" and "Pokemon Sword/Shield"?

We do have ranking per game per category, and it is called leaderboards. But that's where it ends.

I remember ROMaster tallying up something like that. I've also made some sort of scoreboard that gives a certain amount of points for being above a leaderboard's average (and a ton of other factor): https://www.avasam.dev/global-scoreboard . You could use it as some sort of inaccurate metric if you just wanna friendly compete with friends. In which case, go have fun. But should not be taken too seriously.

I think all the main issues with that have already been mentioned. Basically that you can't in any form use that to say that someone is better than someone else. (hence why I heavily framed my thing as being a scoreboard). Whatever you do will always end up extremely arbitrary, and that's just to be accepted. I really don't think anything like this should be done officially.

I like the idea of having an interactive scoreboard, where each user could choose to give weight to different variables and make their own list. So people who think playing lots of different genres is the most impressive could put more weight on that, people who view playing runs with a wide variety of best lengths as more noteworthy could focus on that instead, etc.

But that'd be time and resource intensive to an unreasonable extent, so it isn't something I expect to see.

I can only really see anything like this being of interest if you're keeping it to not an entire genre like Gran Turismo and Mario Kart, but to only a specific series (and even then, it will not always work). One example of it is the Players Page Combined Rankings: https://mariokart64.com/combinedranks/

Edit: Nice thread bump
