Beginner strats and movement help?

HI! I am practicing the 16-star route and sometimes the 0-star route. In the 0 star route, I can't get it to BLJ on that first clip. When I long jump, (which is usually never, he ground pounds instead), he keeps clipping in bounds before I get to move the stick back and mash A and thus causing failure. I am using a PS3 controller btw. Also, in the 16-star route, the wall jumps are freaking insane! I am literally having trouble wall jumping and getting the stars in Whomp's Fortress and Cool, Cool Mountain. I haven't seen any speedrun without the wall jumps so any beginner strats?

Stop practicing 0 star, as of now you're just wasting time you could be using practicing your wall jumps, 0 star is not a beginner run.

It sounds like that you should just do a casual playthrough of the game. If you cant wallkick at all then once you finish a casual playthrough you should probably be better.

My recommendations as a speedrunner that can do all the categories is that DONT DO 0 STAR it will take WAYYY to long to learn. Took me Months after already speedrunning for over a year to learn it. Movement Is usually learned as you do runs. If you really want to practice Movement alone I would suggest moving on to the 70 star categories as there you don't reset as much and the run is pure movement without major tricks like 16 star. If you really want to practice Blj's then theres no real way to get them consistently. The 16 star blj's, I've found, Work best when you learn your first blj on the first stair usually you get going that way. But yeah Sblj,Lblj, DDD Skip are all tricks that should be learned after a great deal of time running

Also don't ever forget to have fun PogChamp

I just beat the game with 16 stars! Take that! I finally can do the wall jumps and long jumps and stuff!! I have a better understanding of the game and its controls now.

I dont quite see the point in telling people not to try just because they feel like they can’t get good. That should be your mentality if your ONLY goal when starting is to get a WR but have fun with that lol. Most of the fun comes from just beating your own times.

Also tips for movement:

-The faster mario is going, the higher he can jump.

-Hold Z while climbing up a slope to run up it farther.

-On peskier slopes, hold A while pressing B repeatedly to do silly kicks up the slope.

-If you’re going fast midair and want to perform a kick and not a dive, pull the joystick in the opposite direction for a quick second, than back to the intended direction. This will slow you down just enough to perform a kick instead.

-In air after performing any jump, keep going in that direction to maintain speed/distance.

-When performing a rollout after a dive, press A and B at the same time for better chances at a dustless rollout (which is significantly faster)

-There are four frames to perform a wall kick after mario hits the wall, if performed on the first frame mario will maintain his momentum. Any frame later than first and he’ll lose it.

-Press A and then B very quickly to do a quick jump kick. You should practically be pressing them at the same time, just press A a fraction of a second sooner. One of the most helpful things about this is that it’s a fixed height.

Holding Z won't make you climb further There's 5 frames in a wallkick To add on for A+B kicks, hold A in cases where you're landing on a platform so that you can instantly press B for a buffered kick and get it first frame.

Sorry not climb necessarily but I thought holding Z allows you to run up slopes a bit further.

@Crabshack give us a video proof of this...don't think, that's true...

I believe he was recalling the fact that holding A allows you to run further up a slope, as demonstrated in Simply's beginner movement tutorials.

he said "z" and i dont think, someone would be grieviously mistaken with several button-names...

Simply was incorrect about that
