Super Smash Bros. Melee leaderboard changelog

Hi guys. Upon talking to the current mods for Melee, we've come to an agreement on some leaderboard changes that were necessary. This thread will serve as a changelog in case we need to update anything else in the future. Here are the current changes:

  • The main change was that In-Game Time is now the default (main) ranking method of times. This allows fairer competition as emulators, Wii USB loading, etc. can compete without worry of real time differences due to loading times. The in-game timer is pretty accurate too, which makes this choice best for the community. I highly recommend that you all check your runs and update them with the IGT if you haven't already; you'll need to use a calculator and do it manually for each mode except for All-Star, as it's given to you. This might be a small hassle but the trade off for better leaderboards is well worth it. I recommend to keep timing by RTA as a back up method too, just for completion's sake.

  • Wii was added as a separate platform to the game, it's not just GCN now. This should have been done a while ago but better late than never. In addition, emulator runs are now shown by default since IGT is the main ranking method. Please update your runs to choose the correct platform if you played on Wii.

  • Rules were clarified greatly. The fact that top 3 times need video evidence was something we had as a policy already, but it wasn't written anywhere. The 5 stock rule was arbitrary and some people didn't follow it anyway, so we scrapped it. I also added a couple guidelines to ensure people know what to do to correctly perform a run.

  • Lastly, Fuzzyness was added as a mod for the game because he has a lot of experience with SSBM. I will add a couple more mods once we get more applicants and decide on that.

We will probably add some new IL categories and more stuff depending upon what people want. For now, these are the changes that have taken place. Feedback and requests for new meaningful categories are welcome, enjoy your runs!

New update: we now allow any order of levels to be played for the All Events category, as long as all 51 event matches are completed. This makes new strategies possible and allows a bit more freedom for the runners.

New update everyone! Event Match individual levels have been added. Obviously the score-based event matches were excluded. Formatting is messed up due to how the site is currently coded, and the non-existent categories are there for the same reason.

If you have any other requests or suggestions, let us know!

Reporting a change to my update I did about 3 weeks ago for adding Event Match individual level charts. I have fixed the formatting and added the charts as they should have been in the first place, as sub-categories utilizing variables. The new groups are named "Individual Level Best Time", same naming scheme for all 4 IL sections. However, I saw that the rest of the existing IL groups had been added incorrectly before I even added my Event Match work, so the leaderboards are still a mess with badly formatted groups. I am leaving those old groups online for now because they have runs submitted to them.

Until the runs are submitted to the new, correctly formatted charts or are somehow moved, I don't want to delete those old groups. That would mean losing runs (even if the majority of the existing runs are improperly submitted in terms of timing), which I don't want to occur. There aren't a lot of runs on those old leaderboards, but even one legitimate run is valuable. If I can't get the other runners to submit to the new charts, I'm unsure of what I will do other than manually submitting runs for them. Stay tuned.

United States

With some help from Warlord, I have finally finished moving all Individual Level runs over to the new formatted categories, which are variables set as subcategories. All of the old, poorly formatted categories have been deleted, so the leaderboards look much nicer now.

The remaining task now is to clean up the leaderboards on all levels further by calculating In-Game Time for runs that do not have it. Some videos are also private, which means they need removing or updating. I will work on that with the other moderators.

United States

Two new moderators have been added for Super Smash Bros. Melee. Please welcome LOZRunner and hypermariosunshine! In addition, Warlord has decided to step down from his moderator position. He did a good job, so thanks to him for his time spent here. A bunch of work remains to be done, so these new mods will be helping out when they have time.

United States

I have added a new regular moderator to Super Smash Bros. Melee. slippy318 is knowledgeable about the game and has time to help out, so I have given him the position. He will verify runs and clean up the leaderboards (like fixing the mistake-ridden IL categories). I might add another moderator to help do things right regarding leaderboard moderation and run verification. I will see if any inactive mods want to step down as well, which I have already started doing. Lastly, I will see if we will make any significant changes to the game regarding mods, 20XX, C-stick usage or whatever else.

We don't get many runs compared to other games on speedrun.com, but I want the game moderated properly. Even though I'm usually busy and don't have much time to help out, I'll continue to try to organize things so that the game is kept in proper shape on speedrun.com.

New Update: Level Leaderboard

The leaderboards for the individual levels have been cleaned up. The “In-game time” slot has been removed from the boards to make them look neater and make the records accurate/consistent. We will still use the IGT/on screen time for ranking our times, but it will now show up under “Real time.”

From now on when you submit your times for Event Match, Target Test, 10-Man Melee, and 100-Man Melee, make sure you put your time in the time slot that just says “Time,” and not the one that says “In-game time.” The timing methods for all of the Full-game Leaderboards will stay the same.

I have added a new regular moderator (InprisonedShadow) and a new verifier (Olive) to Super Smash Bros. Melee. Along with slippy318, I have decided to do this in an effort to further clean up this game and sort more things out going forward. Some existing mods are busy and they may or may not be leaving because of that. We need to communicate better as an SSBM moderator team, and as a result I'm planning on setting up a small group chat for us to participate in going forward.

Things to do still include creating definitive rules about a number of topics like homebrew usage, 20XX usage along with if c-stick should be allowed or not, and more. A lot of runs still need IGT calculated and we can clean up the leaderboards' formatting more as well. As always, if anybody wants to share their feedback on this game's moderation and give ideas, feel free to message me.

Olive has decided to leave the moderator team, and as a result I have added a new moderator: nordanix. Welcome! In addition, more official rule clarifications are coming to Super Smash Bros. Melee very soon. I will post about it here once we finish updating the game.

[big]Update #1:[/big] The Rules now specificies that " 20XX, UCF, and C-Stick mods are forbidden Not too long ago the us moderators discussed whether to allow it or not, and we came to the decision to forbid the use of any mods, such as the popular 20XX, UCF and C-Stick mods.

If you know that either one of these are used in your runs, or if you know other runs that do, please contact any of the moderators so we can remove them!

[big]Update #2:[/big] Visuals and formatting improvements of the Rules I always thought that the state of the rules was previously in a very bad state. They were cluttered and not at all organized. I've since they taken it upon myself to improve the overall visuals and also format them to make it easy to read and know what is what.

This includes headlines such as "General", "Timing" and "Banned" to make it simple to know what type of rules they are.

If there's any suggestions on improvements, feel free to let me know!

[big]Update #3:[/big] Added tons of WR's to the Level Leaderboard There was so much missing runs that wasn't on the Level Leaderboard, so I decided to add all of the fastest time that had video proof.

If you are one of these runners and want them removed, contact any of the moderators and we'll help you!

[big]Update:[/big] RTA and IGT has now fully been added to all runs with videos that previously lacked either one of these.

The biggest change was the addition to IGT, since now tons of runs can actually be ranked on the leaderboards! RTA was usually already added to the runs, but I did double check and retimed where it was needed just in case.

It took quite a while for me to get this done, but it's worth it in the end for a more accurate leaderboard.

I hope I didn't miss any runs, nor that I did any mistakes. If I did, please feel free to let me know!

[big]Update:[/big] All runs now require video proof, regardless of their placing.

Since there's been a large influx of submissions to the Level Leaderboards, we've now decided to require video proof for all submissions from here on and out. (Both Full-game and Individual Levels)

All previous runs prior to this new rule change will stay up for now.

So for any new submissons, make sure to record your run!

[big]Update:[/big] Level Leaderboards has made the switch from RTA to IGT.

Previously submissions used IGT but was required to be submitted as RTA. We've now decided that there's no real reason to keep this, seeing that it's quite confusing.

Therefore I've gone through all of the Level Leaderboard and changed the times for runs from RTA to IGT to reflect this rule change.

I hope I didn't make any mistakes, but if you notice anything wrong, please let me know so it can be fixed!

So for new submissions, please submit IGT as IGT!

Fuzzyness has left the moderator team. He has been inactive for a while in regards to modding this game and after contacting him, he stated that he currently does not speedrun Melee and was fine with being removed.

After talking to some speedrun.com staff members and the SSBM moderator team, I have added four new rules to Melee in order to keep the integrity of the game at a high level. These rules are aimed at keeping this game clean and fair, now and into the future. Three of the rules apply to speedruns done on emulator and one is for the game as a whole. These rules should not hinder or discourage any new competition, and will provide more transparency from the speedrunners.

General: All game audio must be audible throughout the entire run.

Emulator-specific:

  • The entire program window of the emulator must be recorded when speedrunning.
  • The frame rate must be shown on-screen throughout the entire run.
  • The frame counter must be shown on-screen throughout the entire run.

Let us know if you have any questions, comments or feedback on these four rule additions as we welcome your input.

[big]Update:[/big] Dolphin 5.0 (Stable Version) is the only allowed emulator and version. This makes other emulators, most notable Faster Melee, banned because it has less input lag as well as other features such as UCF, etc. So make sure you have the correct emulator and version before submitting your runs!

[big]Update:[/big] Break The Targets, 10-Man Melee and 100-Man Melee now require you to include the part where it loads back to the Character Select Screen after completion. Most runs does this normally anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem. This is added so we can easily detect if someone uses 20XX or other mods.

So just make sure that you don't cut out that part in future submissions!

A little late, but 5 days ago LOZRunner was removed as a moderator for Super Smash Bros. Melee. He does not have the time to dedicate to this job now. I thank him for helping out when he did. We should be fine with the amount of moderators for this game right now, but once the Category Extension page is added, we will probably get a lot more submissions in. If so, we may need an extra moderator to take LOZRunner's place.

A troublesome matter recently appeared regarding some players' verified speedrun videos becoming hidden or unavailable by their own doing. As such, I can created a new Game Rule that addresses the subject, and it is written as:

“If an existing submission with a video that was already approved and watched has its video removed, deleted, hidden, etc., the submission will be subject to removal. If the player in question specifically does not want their video public or able to be seen normally, and does not agree with this rule, their submission will be removed. The point of this website is to have a good source for speedruns with the content in public form, and unavailable videos don't save games' histories or allow other people to determine the validity of the submission in question.”

Hyrule Code Is Now A Sub-Category

We recently said to allow the "Hyrule Code" for runs, but as @SukeSJ said in the Changelog Forum Post [quote=SukeSJ] the decision we made with Hyrule Code and UCF was made extremely quickly by us moderators.[/quote]

And it indeed was a hasty decision with little to no discussion. Now we have dec
