Tips for playing EMU with an xbox controller?

I play in EMU with an xbox controller and obviously it doesnt have the same stick as the original N64 controller, and its hard to perform some things as they require an specific angle with the analog stick, anyway to modify the deadzone or any other thing to make it feel the closest to the N64 stick? Thanks :)

I play emu with a xbox controller as well and i have to be honest it is quite annoying moving the camera sometimes as not having them as dedicated buttons. Sadly i have no tips. Maybe someone could suggest a better controller to use?

Not all of us want to shell out some money to buy a n64 + controller and other accessories needed to even get the thing up and running to even record it.

there is no real modifications you can make that will make it feel like the original n64 controller unfortunately. I was using my xbox controller for all of my n64 speedrunning and have recently quit n64 games until I can get a better controller. The best way to get the angles that you are talking about is getting a controller with notches so you can get perfect up, down, etc. inputs. I will highly recommend that you purchase a controller such as the Retro-bit Tribute n64 for only $20 on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Retro-Bit-Controller-Nintendo-RetroPie-Raspberry/dp/B07Q8FZ8XH/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2L53KQHZKBC04&dchild=1&keywords=retrobit+tribute+64&qid=1589738768&s=electronics&sprefix=retro+bit+tri%2Celectronics%2C323&sr=1-3) or the Hori Switch Battlepad (https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01AD478L6/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used).

I hope this helps, happy speedrunning ;)

Well you could make your own notches to make hitting the right angles easier ... If you are willing to switch to another controller I can also recommend a gamecube controller as those are currently kinda affordable. I would not recommend getting those cheap N64 Controller rebuilds as from what I heard they are neither as precise nore as durable as an original N64 controller (and those already do not have durable Sticks). In general I would definatly recommend notched controllers over non-notched controllers even if the notches do not give you precisely the angle you need, as they still give you a better idea where the correct position to hold your stick is.

I tottaly agree that n64 controller rebuilds are not very good, but the Hori switch battlepad is made by nintendo and is a gamecube style controller, and the Retro-Bit Tribute 64 is a high quality build for its price and has been reviewed and tested and works wonderfully. Nintendrew himself did a review on his channel, and from what i could tell it was a good qualoty build. It also comes in a n64 version that plugs into your n64 instead of the usb verison for switch/emulator.

Yes an n64 controller is the best choice, however, third parties are terrible even if they have good reviews Reason: Stick will get loose very fast Get an official controller with a raphnet (n64 to USB adapter) Here’s the raphnet: https://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/n64_usb_adapter_gen3/index.php N64 Controller: https://www.ebay.com/itm/124190674171 The n64 controller here is just an example of what to get, and how the price should be Or you could buy this one lol

Third parties are ass when it comes to controllers on EMU. Examples are controllers with no logo, they're almost inferior in every way. I had one that had a wonky analog stick that popped off at times. As a former EMU runner, a first party N64 controller is authentic and cheap. I can help you with buying N64 controllers, just DM me on discord, @Jnoama#0001. Raphnet sells good ports, I.E N64 to USB, and GC to N64. Upgrade when you're ready. Hope you can get a good controller soon!

I’m not sponsored or anything but Nintendrew has a good video on YouTube about different N64 controllers. And yes, most 3rd party ones are bad.

I used to be a fan of the Retro-Bit Tribute 64, but lately my A button has been acting off and getting stuck in a half A-press state sometimes, which is honestly super annoying. No amount of cleaning or re-seating it seems to fix it, so it might just be poor quality rubber pads. Might just be my experience, but I wouldn't recommend it because it's killed a few good runs because of this issue. Which is a shame, cause it was nice before this started becoming a problem.
