Mod imbalance and the supposed "dictatorship" mentality

So I don't know where this "need" or mentality came into play for Hobz to be a "dictator" for the community that everything gets funneled into. I know Hobz isn't at fault, I'm not necessarily blaming anyone, I think it just happened more naturally based on various other factors, such as Hobz redoing the lbs, discord, etc, but regardless, the mentality exists and I, as a leaderboard mod, am to an extent questioning what I even do anymore.

To add a bit of context, one of the big issues that sparked a lot of this is the khspeedruns twitch page. This was created by Hobz in order to host community events, spotlights, etc and more recently, the KH relay. For one, very few even knew Hobz even made the page. I myself was under the impression White and Saiyanz did and as I was being proactive in adding in my input to them about the relay, I wrongfully haggled saiyanz for not updating the page at all with no knowledge whatsoever that he couldn't. Furthermore, after further looking into this, it was found that only Hobz had the info for it, would not hand it out and even used a real personal password for it. As a leaderboard mod, I can't help but feel I should at least have SOME power over it, be it the info or at least editor. What if Hobz isn't around? What then? Why can't we go to someone else like Biz or Sonic? What do mods even do anymore other than mash out the occasional verify button, or often in my case, not even do that because they're concerned someone else would have rejected.

Another thing is back in the day, we had a leaderboard mod skype group. With the advent of the forums and discord, it died off, but now as a result, all we have is here. This is fine and all, but here's the thing: I don't always need to type up some elaborate forum post for every question I might want to be directed to other mods. And more importantly, I work a lot. I'm not home a lot, I'm on my phone and my phone has data charges. I can't always just load srcom and lurk the forums. Now, the thing I prefer about discord AS A PROGRAM over others is the ability to see any chat you missed without needing to be in the server, like you would in teamspeak or something. It might not be the MOST necessary thing, but right now, it just feels rather difficult to talk amongst mods. Arranging people to all be together for "meetings" is a bitch and we don't always have the luxury of being able to watch everything and a centralized place we all have easy access to would make communication way easier.

Basically to sum it up, basically everything feels like it's getting funneled to Hobz and all mods need to be able to handle things on their own too.

Agreed with Silver here. I fully think Hobz has always had the best intentions for the community, but I do feel like sometimes he tries to do too much by himself and kind of leaves some other people feeling a tad unimportant. (Not at all on purpose either.) As LB mods, you should have the power to do more than accept a run and definitely the confidence. I have a feeling that most mods, if not all of them, wouldn't question a run verification, or an edit somewhere, unless it was clearly warranted. If that was the case, i'm sure they'd handle it appropriately.

As mods, that should mean that you're part of a trusted group of people to do so. I totally understand Hobz being protective of the central hub twitch channel like he is. It's something he seriously wants to protect and make sure that every time it's used, it produces quality content and is friendly to anyone that joins. But, I think that there should be some trust to pass the torch when he's unavailable. Passing it to someone like Biz, Silver, etc who would make DAMN sure that everything was kept in line and working optimally, to me, wouldn't be a bad idea. And I totally understand NOT passing that information off to someone who Hobz can't trust. As Silver said above me, communication has kind of fallen apart of late and communication is KEY. Not with just the LB mods, but with everyone.

If there is anything I personally can do to assist in helping anyone, please don't hesitate to let me know. I'm pretty much always available and near my phone/twitter/TS.

Okay so I'm really ill right now so I've been out of the loop regarding pretty much everything the past month but I was told to check this thread so I thought I'd chip in and give my two cents as a leaderboard mod.

First when its come to making any serious change regarding Days / CoM / Re:Coded I've generally always asked two other mods their opinions before I do anything because that's what we should be doing as leaderboard mods, typically this is Saiyanz and Hobz because they are the two leaderboard mods I'm closest to and the two that are typically available. Not because I see them at a higher rank than myself or any of the other leaderboard mods. The one exception to this was when I brought up the discussion on Re:CoM categories because: A ) I don't actually run the game, I just like routing it B ) Hobz and Sonic were active runners so I held their opinions slightly higher

Personally I'd like to see the leaderboard Skype come back be it a discord or just the old group as like Silver I'm often not around so I miss a lot of information and sometimes discussions like this one should really be kept to ourselves rather than have everyone involved. Ideally we can have a discussion about the Twitch page there as the situation is pretty complex and we need to create strict rules and guidelines surrounding it before we give the information to anyone so until we do so I kind of agree with Hobz being the only one having control of it.

I was actually unaware the Skype group still existed. I'd say discord purely for the fact that I can easily access it on my phone and more importantly, already use it (well that and Skype likes to crash constantly).

And that's a fair point Toji. I suppose the real issue may even just be that I just want to do more, but not doing as much comes with the package of convenience, I suppose.

So since I was out of town, I've missed over two weeks of forum posts. Let me state this again as clearly as I can, because there is some kind of gigantic misconception around the twitch.tv/KHSpeedruns channel.

I created the channel to...

  • Provide a central location for viewers to experience high PRODUCTION quality content (things like overlays, transition screens, stable connections, potentially animations in the future)
  • Showcase community content and events
  • Potentially create analysis videos of strats, WRs, races, etc.
  • Potentially create weekly events (similar to the ol' Aqua Crit Fight Night)
  • Potentially start some sort of monthly recap show
  • Many other ideas I hadn't even begun to flesh out

I did not create the channel to...

  • Stream the KH Relay. At the time, I was coordinating with Puwexil who would've loved to have it on the RPGLB channel which, given the upcoming KH runs at the event, I thought was the perfect place for it.
  • Give anyone and everyone access to it. For fear of a KH13com channel or Chibi situation, I never intended to share the login info (except with potentially only Rebel). While part of the purpose of the channel would be for showcasing community content, it was not going to be a "community channel." I wanted to be able to control what got put on it, sticking to a consistent schedule, and revoking privileges if necessary.

While that last part makes me sound like a bit of a control freak, you have to understand that this channel was intended to be just like any personal channel, except centered around showcasing others. I actually had 0 intention of ever streaming to it myself unless some sort of talk or analysis show did end up happening.

So why call it KHSpeedruns? Because it was available. And it perfectly describes the content that I was planning for the channel. We already had a channel to reach out for community-controlled streaming if we wanted: twitch.tv/KHMarathon. This was supposed to be entirely different.

Where the misconception started was that somehow Salyanz and White found out I had created the channel and then ASSUMED it was created FOR the KH Relay. I did not tell anyone it was for that. I did not tell anyone I'd be sharing login info. These were assumptions that were made and then acted upon. I was then TOLD (not asked) that the relay would be streamed to it and, since I didn't want to be a dick, obliged. Maybe that's my bad, maybe I should have reminded them that the KHMarathon channel existed and that this was for something else. However it is assumptions that led people to believe I made the channel to be shared by all, not what it was actually for.

Note that I'm not yelling at White and Salyanz or anything; assumptions happen. But I want to be clear that I received a lot of hate and fallback for something that I was completely and utterly confused about since I didn't know there had been assumptions that I created the channel for the community. I did not. Like I said, I knew we already had one for that.

I hope that clears some things up, but I have to say I've been very upset at the way people reacted to me simply making a fucking Twitch account. It's a free account, it's not like anybody "told me to" or "let me" make it. If you decide today to go make an account called "MegaMan Speedruns" and only stream SM64 to it I'm not gonna yell at you; it's a free account, you can do with it whatever you wish.

To specifically reply to Silver now: I don't know why you feel that there's nothing for you to do. There are still BBS pages that are not set up properly ( http://www.speedrun.com/khbbs ), for example. Not to mention, it's not like we as mods were given a list of things to do and then I just said "I'm in control" and did them all. I just suggested improvements I thought would be good and did them after getting buy-in on the forums. ANYBODY CAN DO THAT. Hell you don't even have to be a mod to get the process started.

I'm all down for a discord group btw, seeing as I was a large proponent for the Skype group initially (and hate Skype).
