Hello! I am trying to get into speedrunning, as i got a lot of past time and would love to put that into.. beating games fast. haha.

but looking at my options, i cant think of a game i would speedrun, or how to set up timers!

i have been gaming for a long time though, i normally play Call Of Duty/Shooting games, (which you cant really speed run) unless you sit through the boring story mode. so i am not sure! is there a speed running game that i can play to get into speed running, that isnt too popular where my times will be -1000#

LiveSplit is arguably the best timer for speedrunning, use that.

People speedrun shooters all the time. Quake was a big one. You don't necessarily have to play story mode in CoD to speedrun. Create goals/tasks/categories all your own if you want. Basically if you can set up a scenario where you can beat something fast, or slow, depending on how you play, then it can be speedrun. Exceptions of course are games that are on rails/autoscroll, since there's nothing to really speed up.

As far as looking for an unpopular or less popular game where you can get what looks like a more impressive position on the leaderboard, I would cancel that shit right now. It's the wrong reason to get into speedrunning tbh. If you want 1st place trophies though just submit a game or assume the mod role on a dead leaderboard, create a TON of categories as well as add individual level runs, and submit all your runs. Boom instant 50 WRs, you da best etc. wowweezowie

Komrade, it was less of me wanting to be 1st on the leaderboards, and more of me having competition which isnt too advanced. being 1st isnt really an issue, but having a time i can actually believe i can beat is what im looking for haha

Can't help ya there then. The only real difference between a popular leaderboard and a smaller one is the number of runners. Unless you stumble upon a game that everyone interested in the game seems to suck at it. You're most likely going to always have competition. It's still the wrong approach. Beat the game you wanna run as fast as possible for yourself, not a stupid leaderboard.

I can give you some other tips.

  1. Always record when playing even when just messing around. You never know when you might encounter something interesting. There were a couple times when playing that I had to go back to my recording because something unusual happened. And sometimes you get something useful! Ex: One boss I was just running through these flames that reduce your health when I noticed my health had not decreased as expected. Tried the boss and that spot again after looking at the video and voila, a safe point.
  2. Pay attention. You may notice that something you believed to be true is not. When you think something is random, it may not be. One rpg I played I realized the enemies the boss summoned were predictable based on what guys you had out and how far away they were from the boss.

Call of duty black ops II has a first prestige category so it does not have to be for a story mode alone when talking about shooters granted it is about the time of Final fantasy 10 on PS2 10 to 11 hours long if you are good. Also OBS is usually the best to have as it works with just about any other capture device and makes them better plus you can use it to record separate windows so it is easy to set up Livesplit to appear in the recording even when minimized and with the universal settings in Livesplit you can do splits start and stop the timer with it minimized with a press of a assigned key. Best part OBS and Livesplit is free which is one of the reasons why they are arguably the best.
