RE2 - Where has the PAL section and door skip gone?

Why is it that the PAL Section of the Resident Evil 2 Speedrun leaderboard has been taken down?

You cannot expect people from the UK/EU to import consoles and games, just to be able to compete in speedrunning. The only way around it, would be to emulate the games, but even then, you don't accept emulation runs.

You've single handedly wiped UK/EU speedrunners (who don't have access to imported consoles/games) off this website.

Also, what is the harm of a door skip section?

Are you going to return the PAL section and if not, a valid reason would be appreciated.

Deckard - I got rid of the PAL 50hz category because there were too many and I wanted to truncate it. For the sake of making these boards look cleaner and to encourage competition, there needs to be fewer categories. Nobody was running it seriously nor submitting times. The only time submitted here was by AndehX and he said I could take it down a long time ago, but I didn't do anything until now because i was expecting people to run it. I figured nobody would miss it, because 99% of the PAL region players here are more than willing to run PC or Emu (and DO run PC, emu, or even import NTSC-J).

I dunno where you got the information that emulators were not accepted here, but PLEASE, look again, because there IS an emulator category for PS1. As a community, we've accepted emulator runs since 2013 on the old wiki. There was a period where that didn't happen, but that was my bad because I was too narrow-minded to see how emulator runs and console runs could co-exist.

Poopfist - Actually, in the case of RE2, the game runs at 30FPS on NTSC and 25FPS on PAL. Same math, but the universal constant is that PAL runs 5/6ths as fast as NTSC. Certain assets are sped up or slowed down in order to adapt to the framerate when developers make the PAL port, as NTSC logic and PAL logic are different. If you played the PAL version at 60Hz without a 60Hz mode, then the game would run at 30FPS but things like music and certain animations would run too fast.

Liv - There isn't a point since we're all using game timer for everything. We can still figure this out anyway though, for the sake of discussion, and because I don't know anything about it either: the PAL timer does run differently, but RE2 NTSC's in game timer DOES factor in the skipped cutscenes. 50 minute RTA Leon A is the same game timer as 1:05 IGT Leon A whether you skipped the cutscenes or not. Has anyone done a speedrun on PAL without skipping cutscenes to confirm this?

I think GC PAL was here for a reason (cutscene skip and some competition). It is slow as hell? Yes. But still it's the fastest console PAL version.

Except why do we need to encourage separate competition for a version which was deliberately slowed down? Everyone is willing to run the faster version and they can run it fine. I played PAL once when I was in Sweden, everything functions the same except it's slower because the TVs were built to have a lower refresh rate.

There are free options in every community (which is almost always emulator or PC, we have this), and there are options that cost money that people commit to for the sake of competing with a specific record. If you look at ANY other game's community in the speedrunning community, they do that. Europeans import NTSC shit for NES games, SNES games, N64, PlayStation 1/2, and Gamecube all the time, because they're looking to compete in specific relevant categories.

We're seriously the ONLY community in speedrunning that makes that big a deal about separating console PLATFORMS (a la PS1, GCN, PC), but ONLY because there are large justifiable differences between each version. I already tried to make the concession to accessibility here by adding as many categories as I thought were reasonable to people who may not have access to a game console. Dolphin is still not stable, PSXjin is, and PC is PC.

We don't even have to worry about cost for imports anymore. It's 2015, and imports are fucking easy as shit to buy and play on your console. With the advent of being able to buy Japanese games off of PSN and play them on PS3 (or any other sony console that supports PSN for that matter) for literally $5, why is a paywall to play the version that everyone plays even an issue? You are paying the same cost to buy the import version of a game made in 1998, as you would pay domestically in your own country.

2000 yen PSN card, $20 off Play-Asia. Biohazard 2 is only like 500 yen. In the last month I've verified more NTSC emulator runs from French players than any other player anyway. If you can play ANY of the platforms that are capable of running a game at 60Hz for ultra-cheap or no money at all, then it makes absolutely no sense to include a board for a slower version of the game just on principle like that.

Like, this shouldn't even be a discussion, can we please not do this?

nice to see someone go into detail about the differences in PAL/NTSC rather then just hearing misinformation, thanks.

  1. 99% of community is able to play with the sourcenext version + console are here only to respect guys who don t want to play on PC even if the competition is obviously on PC. I think everyone will agree this, it s a fact.

  2. About PAL/NTSC, It s clearly not a disrespect issue there. It s about 50hz/60hz. For example Twispy on dreamcast run PAL version BUT with 60hz activated.

  3. Since i m on RE community, i see people running all versions possible of a game ... why don t you pick the fastest/more competitive version when you re able to run it ? You know i m also an european guy and i had the same issue with RE1, i runned it on psxjin cause i m not capable to buy a japanese ps2 and i was pretty angry about this at the very beginning. Today i see that it was really the way to go and community grow up. There s way to much categories in RE series and we have to come back to basis. Stop split the community please.

  4. The real issue at my eyes, we have to reduce number of WR holder. I mean today people just want WR and everybody have one lol. This is non sense. We must stop that. A huge part of community forgot that we are here for fun and play together. World Record is a cool thing of course but really ... for me someone running the game with a slower time is as important than a WR holder.

  5. Don t forget, some stuff are banned from leaderboard but nobody prevent you to play the game ;)

That s why i think 50hz version must stay banned in RE2 case, it s only my opinion. I don t want drama. Still listen everyone.
