Another Android App -- But this one is good!

Hi all,

I have been working on (yet another) unofficial Android app for Speedrun.com for the last couple months. The project has really been making headway in recent weeks, so I figured I would open a thread here to get some feedback/following.

Link to the app on the Play Store:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=danb.speedrunbrowser

The app has a number of nice features:

  • Support for watching youtube AND twitch videos in the app
  • Locally stored watch history, no sign in or registration
  • View all leaderboards and categories and levels in a compact and conformant manner
  • Dedicated backend servers not connected to speedrun.com--the app is very fast and snappy!
  • View player personal bests and graphs of PBs over time
  • Support for both phones and tablets, landscape or portrait.
  • Notifications within minutes of a favorite runner or game's PBs or WRs

Possibly in the future I can do an iOS clone of this as well, depending on how well the Android app turns out.

For those curious of the source code, it is here. Good luck tho, its not documented ;)

I plan to keep working on this app for the future so, again, I would really appreciate feedback!

Just a question, how long do you think it will take for the iOS version to be released

The iOS version has been kind of a big if since the beginning. If it seems like there is enough interest for it, then one could probably be ready a couple of months after it is decided to be produced. I have also considered partnering with one of the existing app implementations for iOS (I know they are not the same).

No, the app is only intended to be a browser. Logging in via the app would require logging in or accepting your API key which is something I believe would not be worth it, and most of the functionality from logging in is just submitting speedruns or moderating, which is best done through the site itself.

Sounds cool. We need to check it out

I'm sure someone with admin rights will be able to look into this and get the scan up and running again. In the meantime, maybe consider reaching out to the Coverity support team for assistance. They may have some insights or solutions that could help resolve the issue quickly. You could also take a look on the alternatives, like smart engines ocr sdk. Keep us posted on the progress and let us know if there's anything else we can do to help. Good luck!
