How difficult is it to actually run a marathon?

Anyone ever done one? I was thinking of doing a short 6-8 hour marathon, but I'd have no idea where to start. Need some advice.

United States

I haven't done one myself (the longest one I did was about 4.5 hours), but there are things to keep in mind:

· Why do you want to do the marathon? What's the goal? - If you don't have this answered already, you're probably not actually going to go through with it. · Plan ahead - Do you know of anything that might interrupt the marathon? Things don't always go as planned. Have something in mind if you have to abruptly cut it. · You're likely going to feel like stopping midway, avoid these thoughts and keep trucking. The more motivated you are to finish your goal, the easier this is to do. Like with the larger marathon events speedruns can start going bad. Fight the muscle memory to hit the restart button or getting upset.

I had more in mind but I can't recall atm :p

-The plan is to raise money for Wounded Warriors. My goal is $100. I think that's reasonable given my lower viewer count.

-My idea is to run Steam games and have someone knowledgeable about each game (other than the runner) help with commentary, so that I can bounce questions off of them. It would be stupid for me to do commentary alone on games that I know very little about. I also plan on having a few back ups (obviously).

Aye.

I didn't stream that much during a day, but if you're willing to make your marathon the most enjoyable you can, I can logically say this to you :

  • Explore your Steam games a lot, because your game's choices will matter a lot. Not only because it has to be enjoyable for your viewers, but you also need to appreciate them to make them cool to watch. Popular games are good, not only because they are publicly well known, but because you obviously will get better chances to find someone who can help you about commentaries. Coop games are funny too.

  • About visibility, your twitch friends can help you by hosting your marathon. They can make your twitch tchat cool too, and they are generally good allies when it comes to moderate if needed.

  • That's obvious, but doing some publicity to announce your future marathon, and choosing wisely when it will start and end. You won't get the same people if you're streaming during day or during night, week or weekend.

I'll probably get more ideas later, but I gotta go.

Thanks for the input guys! I'm trying to put together a rough draft of potential games to showcase. I'll put the list below and just edit it as I think of more. Please look it over and let me know what you think.

Games: 01. Inside My Radio. I tweet/get tweets back from the developer pretty frequently so I might be able to swing getting them on for commentary. Probably a mid-marathon game. 02. Ink? Any% is a short run (The AGDQ 2016 run was 13:30). 03. Enter the Gungeon OR Kill to Collect. Both of these games are extremely new and obviously not really routed yet. We'll have to see what would be the most marathon safe way to pull it off, but I think this sort of game would be very interesting to see. 04. Undertale? probably neutral ending would be best? 05. Mighty No 9? IF IT EVER COMES OUT >:[

I'd like to make at least one of these a race. What do you guys think?

  1. IMR is your field, so that's a logical choice.
  2. Be careful with INK. Try to time your runs, because it's a die & retry that can eat your time easily. Like Super Meat Boy, the difficulty of the game might crush your estimates.

I don't know that much the rest of your list.

Oh I wasn't planning on being the runner for each of these games. I was planning on getting people who are actually good at them haha. IMR is the only one I would feel comfortable even streaming, let alone running for a marathon.
