Category Confusions

Alright, so there have been some weird categories showing up on the front page that it's not exactly clear what they are, and the rules don't explain. Either a standard name like "any%", "100%", "Hard Mode any%", etc. etc. or a more game specific category name (can't think of any offhand) with descriptive rules would fix this-is there anything in place for making leaderboards more accessible? Other than bringing it to mod attention, I can't think of any.

This has "any%", "100%" (both good enough) and... "Better any%". What makes it better? The rules are exactly the same as any%, so those aren't helpful. What makes it different?

This isn't the only example of an objectively bad category name/description, but it's the only one on the frontpage right now.

I think some of the reason for the category naming conventions is that there are no moderator guidelines anywhere on the site, no "so now you're a game moderator" type things. Just having a standard of any type, some what to do and what not to do point, could alleviate some of the general moderator difficulties.

Most of the times the categories is something the community comes up with. Imho the community should have the freedom to make those on the leaderboards, but then also give an explanation in the rules or guides.

Just as a note, I checked out the rules for the HP3 categories, and they actually aren't the same. In Any% and 100%, it says timing stops when you close the Completed requirements list, whereas better any% just says to close it. I assume this means that completing the requirements list isn't an interesting part of the run, so Better any% is defined in that way (and iirc, it doesn't count the game as finished unless you complete that list). I do however agree that it could be clearer.

And also if you just clicked one more link to the forums you would have found the explanation for the better% ( http://www.speedrun.com/hp3pc/thread/362uk )

Still, the definition should be in the rules of the category and not in the forums-it took someone asking what the difference was for it to be anywhere on-site.

I don't know who added the category and I hadn't checked the rules since it's not my area in the series (I don't do PC much), but I've added what Better Any% rules out from Any%. Maybe a category-verification process in the future where all the mods for a game can amend a game's name and ruleset until it's unanimously agreed upon before it's put up could happen (as an option)?

with the category-verification process the games with only one moderator are a bottleneck, maybe something that should also be added to it that the rules should be added before the category shows up on the leaderboard if it would become a thing.
