Door Skip / Remap Tutorial

EDIT as of January 2022: Steam updated the Configuration Settings, and removed the feature entirely. (wtf Steam) So, the alternative is to set the Controller Config specific to the game, which Martin explains in the latest post here in this thread. Please refer to Martin or DiamondDogez setup for Steam. Joy2Key still works with Martin's method, theoretically, it's just more out of the way.

Upon popular demand, I have created a video explaining how to set up everything that's needed to start speedrunning the PC Door Skip category. A simple Door Skip explanation, as well as a faster and more comfortable way of stair skating, without the use of turbo or macro. No longer will you have to destroy your hand/wrist to run this category. Enjoy, and have fun!

Thank you so much for making this Maxy! I've been wanting to get back into running this for a while, but every time I tried to play the stair skating would kill my arm. Can't wait to get get my first Jill run in and work on my Chris runs again.

I recently got a new controller as mine was pretty old and started to wear out. I got a Xbox One controller and plugged it in. I went and checked the controller config and everything looked alright, but when I started the game up the right stick no longer does anything at all. I went back and tried to do everything from the video again, and I can't get it working. What's even more strange is that when I try to use my old controller the stair skating doesn't work anymore either. Everything is set up like in the video, but nothing is working. Has anyone else had this issue when they change controllers?

I tried what was said in the video and I still just quick turn. Any ideas?

I was away on vacation and didn't see these last two messages. Jadusable had a similar issue, and it was fixed by downloading a more recent version of JoyToKey, which can be found with the same link provided in the video description. Let me know if that works or not.

I'm having issues with steam not giving me the option to define my button layout on ps4 controller. Any thoughts on this guys??

Having the same issue as Backyardcaveman. Actually Steam thinks my PS4 controller is a XBOX controller. So I got issues but I want to run this game!

If anyone is having trouble with this setup, I do suggest trying different versions of JoyToKey, making sure that the Define Layout in Steam is saving correctly (Steam may need updating or restarting sometimes), and be sure to test the game in Windowed, Borderless, and Fullscreen, as I've had some people have trouble keeping JoyToKey recognized in some of these display options. I do see that Nyx has made an update in the forums claiming that some people have turned to a certain configuration in Steam that I tried to wave people away from. Without confirmation from an Input Display (which I recommend everyone remapping uses), there's no way to tell if you're simply holding a button, as that's what this certain configuration can do. It's very easy to tell just by looking at the stair-skating, as there will be no human error. Human error that DOES occur when using my method, because you still have to perform the stair-skate. Again, if you want to prove legitimacy, using an input display is your best bet. There are many available online and for download for you to use.

thank you for that Maxy, unfortunately i have already tried all of these solutions. the issue for me is that steam wont let me define the layout as the xbox controller does. Either way i've just been getting used to the xbox controller

I figured it out on steam. Thank you! :)

How did you figure it out?

Go to the game page itself on steam and controller config in there. Remap through that whole interface. I could of sworn there was a step by step on the forum here for it.

Ahh okay. This is what I had done before. I can only wiggle the joystick from side to side though lol

You're supposed to move with the d-pad and do a clockwise motion with the stick. Or thats what I do at least.

Yea I know, but my ps4 controller only registers left and right inputs when I remap

I'm assuming this can't be done unless you have a XBOX controller. I've been pulling my hair trying to get this to work right, even with using DS4 to fool Steam into thinking my PS4 controller is XBOX.

Unless someone has some insight for us PS4-Controller gang, I'm settled on doing it the OG way for this category xD

you can do it with DS4 but it's a bit more annoying, you have to plug in your controller first then go to the game in your library. On the right side of where it says like "store page" and "community Hub", with your controller plugged in, go to "controller configuration."

A window will pop up where you can add control schemes. Click on "ADD ACTION SET" at the top (I recommend using your controller to navigate, I tried to use my mouse and it kept going funky on me). Just call it whatever you want to and click "OK." Now navigate to the action set you just made and select it. Everything will be blank. Just remap everything as a copy of the DEFAULT set HOWEVER, leave the right joystick blank. Leaving the right joystick blank is like what maxy shows in the video so that joytokey can use the right stick to sprint.

Once you have done that go to "MANAGE ACTION SET," should be the share button on the DS4 Controller. Once in their change "Action set to switch to when cursor is shown" to the set that you created with nothing mapped to the right stick. You shouldn't have to do it to the one below it, however I do just to make sure it doesn't mess up on me. Now you just need to click "OK" and close the Controller Configurator window and as long as joytokey is set up right it should work in game now!

Now I have a question regarding this set up. Is it possible to get this set up using the method from the first post without it having an affect on other games from your steam library? Using this set up and going into other games completely kills the right stick for those other games.
