Why I think MK8DX should remain RTA and not IGT

I'm sorry to make another discussion on this topic, but I'm hoping by me expressing my opinion on this topic can bring it to an end.

Whenever a runner starts the run they are put in last place on the first track, which gives them 5 coins to start the track with. If we were going to do runs with In-Game Time It would technically be faster to quit after every track and start another VS Race to get those 5 coins. Doing this will add a heap of time RTA as you lose ~20 secs real time every track exit.

"So why don't we just make it that 48 Track runs have to be done in VS Race in one sitting W/O exiting?". Because that is stupid. Lets say someone wanted to complete all cups just so they can do individual cup runs, they are still completing all 48 tracks so there is no reason not to reject that run, also the old 48 Track, 200cc, Items WR which was 1:32:28 https://www.speedrun.com/mk8dx/run/zn8rlx8z had accidentally lost 20 secs due to selecting 32 tracks instead of 48 tracks. This run should not be made invalid.

Someone made a comparison of the tied mushroom cup WR for 200cc (I can't find the video will link it when found) It was clear when watching the video that the initial load was the same for everyone except Draco655's run which got a 'Fast load'. Loading times can be inconsistent meaning giving an average load time to remove from the run would be too inaccurate. Also livesplit can remove loading times from some PC games but console games would almost be impossible. I'd also like to note that the digital version which is the fastest version of the game isn't hard to buy.

If nintendo decides to add an In-game timer to the tracks similar to other mario kart games I'd like to see a column added to the boards similar to MK64, but it should not be the main timing method. Thanks for reading!

"I'd also like to note that the digital version which is the fastest version of the game isn't hard to buy." Isn't hard to buy, but it is another $60 for those that happened to buy physical on habit. Easy, but doubling the price for some people (myself included).

So if you want to have more "inclusive" runs, doing IGT is better. Knowing that I have to buy another copy of the game (to compete with others) makes me simply content not trying to beat the top times. Just my opinion as a cartridge (and slow) and plain bad MK8D runner XD

It's like in the Olympics if you win 1st place but they give the trophy to second place! Please separate digital and cartridge!

@Chikorita Is there a better solution? Speedrunners have been using the fastest version of their games for years despite the price so being honest $60 isn't insane. My post was against IGT being the main timing method and why loadless time just cannot work (Although I wish someone could make a loadless timer). Thanks for the response!

I'm not going to bother respond to @OBSIDIAUS because its obvious by his other posts that he is a troll

Don't get me wrong, for most types of games I prefer the RTA (that I've played), it's just as a person that would only do some runs of them game (no seriousness to aim for a top time), knowing that my cartridge is at a disadvantage just makes me consider to not bother with attempts (in my own opinion).

$60 isn't much, but doing "only 60" for the game also applies to other games as well. Such as today, I was considering a famicon or famicon classic. Paid a lot more for the old version simply for the load times. If I bought the classic thinking it was okay, well I'd have to invest twice (say like with other games). It just adds up if you like to try multiple different games.

@hifi I am not a troll! I literally said something serious and you ignored it and called me a troll! Can you actually respond to what I said (which was completely serious) rather than not responding because "I'm a troll" even though I said something serious? That makes me mad and it would make you mad too! That's not fair to call me a troll and even if I was, what I said is defiantly not being a troll so don't act like I'm being a troll, when I'm not being a troll! Sorry if that was redundant.

Also hifi if you think that then don't say anything! You said you wouldn't respond but you did by saying that! Rather than taking the time to respond to what I said, you took the time to call me a clown when what I was saying wasn't being a clown. What reason did you have to say that? (That's not rhetorical I actually wanna know). The only reason I see was to get me mad which it did.

If you react that much to someone calling you a troll,

you probably are one.

Gaming land and hifi can y'all address the fact that I said something 100% serious and hifi just trashed me? Defending yourself is not being a troll. So please address what I said earlier about my analagy to the leaderboard. Also hifi you were the one who just randomly brought up that I was a troll so you were off topic first and that's what makes me mad. If y'all can't see what's wrong with saying I'm a troll based on forums I made 2 months ago and is completely irrelevant to what I said, than your retarded.

Please stop trashing me over things I said 2 or 3 or even 6 months ago I was new to social media because I didn't like it before but I wanted to try it. Judging me based on what I said 6 months ago isn't applicable now and you thinking that and calling me out on it is being a jerk.

Alright, enough.

For chatroom smack-talking nonsense use a chatroom (Discord, Skype, IRC, etc), not this forum. Same goes with the insults and the jabs. I'm tired of this trend of threads and posts derailing towards garbage discussion, it's a waste of people's time and a complete lack of respect for those who are legitimately interested in following MK8DX content. Again, this is a message board, not a public chatroom. Is it too much to ask if I could open the forums for game discussion for once, rather than seeing the same typical self-centered drama that one user seems to be part of almost all the time? I'm fed up of this, and whoever's guilty of these should be ashamed for belittling a public environment that was kindly conceded to us.

If you want to argue shit, use the #off-topic channel on the Discord server to set up a private DM/group chat or something. Just keep things civil here for once, OK?

As for the topic at hand, I'm not sure what to say besides me hoping that Nintendo would kindly remember to bring the race timer back in future games. All racing games use a timer to determine standings, so I'm not sure why Nintendo would think that's too much information for the average player to handle if player positions at the end of a race are determined by their final time. We can't really have a true IGT measurement for speedruns otherwise!

That's as far as I can go, I think. "Loadless" has the issue with loading times being inconsistent, and there's not a lot of loading samples yet to determine a solid average to deduct times from (for runs that would not end in 1st place at least). Plus, I don't see people going through the trouble of spending effort to determine the loading times for each run they do, further subtracting from the accessibility this game currently benefits.

As I mentioned before, it is a really complicated issue. Without an accurate IGT from the game itself, it becomes hard to move away from the RTA method. The best course of action I see is having Nintendo realize that mistake and at the very least re-implement the timer back in future Mario Kart games.

By the way, Hifi, you said that even if Nintendo would add a IGT to races then you'd still prefer it to not be the main method. However you didn't elaborate further on that. I'm curious, why would you think an official IGT would be unwise to use in, say, a full uninterrupted In Order run?

Mystwalker I will agree I am involved in a lot of arguments and I'm sorry for that but this one? No hifi said I was being a troll so how was that my fault? It was completely unfair and I was contributing to the discussion. I was on topic and said something that has to do with the topic. Not all drama is started by me so don't be pointing fingers at me this time k? This time it was hifi who started it. Also I do respect that ppl wanna stop talking about this, this will be the last forum post I make about the argument regardless what people say to belittle me but I feel I must be justified when someone starts drama on me then say I STARTED IT. That's so dumb and I hate it.

Also I think if there is no solution to all this, keep the leaderboards as is and do nothing and let digital dominate. I don't see a convineint solution everyone is willing to agree to.every time someone brings up this topic it's never solved so just leave it that way.

Myst I mentioned my reasoning behind my idea of IGT being a bad idea for full game runs because of how you start off the first track behind all players with 5 coins and a higher chance of getting a mushroom from the first item box, if a player were to go for the fastest IGT they would quit after every track just to get these 5 coins and strategic item advantage. This would be unbearable to watch and would make the run way slower RTA. I still believe that the 48 track category can be completed however they want in their chosen order if they choose the "Choose" option in VS Race or pick individual cups in Grand Prix as long as they have all 48 tracks completed and this rule shouldn't be replaced. I would support an loadtime remover if that ever becomes possible on console games but I'm not for IGT.

Portugal

Obsidiaus, I'm sure that what I said about keeping things civil applied to everyone involved in this thread, not just you in particular. I talked with Hifi about this as well, don't worry. Lets put a stop to this nonsense and keep the forums a nicer place for everyone interested in the game.

Hifi, that's what I meant by uninterrupted runs. So as long as the player doesn't restart VS Race over and over to abuse first load + 5 coin advantage, it'd be OK to go for a hypothetical IGT, right? That's something that could be enforced if IGT were ever to become a thing, but again, that's just a theoretical scenario at the moment.

@Lusonice2021 your runs will get verified eventually. there's no need to make a forum post for it
