Least amount of A presses needed to beat SMB?

.5 means i kept the button held after jumping on bowser axe. As pannenkoek explained - a has 3 parts - when the button isnt held, when the button is held, and when the button is let off after holding it. Together they form a complete a press. So holding a button is just .5 of the whole press. That means it isnt 117 a presses, its kust 116.5

I'm not sure you're using the .5 notation as designed. It's important in the SM64 run because it indicates when the A button is held during a level from its start, carried over from earlier in a run, but this is only used for an individual level context. When looking at the entire run, you wouldn't say that the final A press is only a half-press because you never let go of the controller, it would count as a full press. The 120 star A button challenge isn't said to have 18.5 presses to remove, it has 19. .5 is only ever used looking at individual levels, not full runs.

1 press is 1 input.

Alright then, 117 A presses is human theory, with that said go and try to beat it. The whole meaning of this thread was to someone try this challenge. We may create a abc community just like in sm64. So, go and try it out. With challenges like this we can make the game fun and great again. Atleast bit of it.

Plus there are a lot of categories either way, for the people who are agreeing with this category, I recommend that you'd leave this thread and stay away from it because, it would be wasting you're time and, @roopert83 made it very clear that the mods wouldn't accept anymore category extensions Other people who are reading this, please follow the new leaderboard rules, read change 4 https://www.speedrun.com/smbce/thread/kof23

Weren't people talking about just doing this for fun? That's completely okay if so, there just wouldn't be a CE leaderboard for it.

Yea, i agree the game is still fun, but look : for example new speedruner approaches into the game : tries to break through sub 5 for example : becomes frustrated with the game : at the end, quits. Sm64 is not like this, because they have a whole tas group that analyzes every single aspect of the game, and there is always something to come back to. The game still gets hundreds of views, and why does smb not get such attention? Simple - the game gets boring after a while which is completely understandable, since sm64 has an actual community that is doing these kinds of ABC’s and stuff. If we slowly become a similar community, we can get more people to play the game, and in the end more people will want to stream it, and then the community will keep growing. Smb has potential to beat sm64 for a few facts - less hardware requirements indeed, i do not really think that matters but yeah, the game can be run well on probably every platform (above the NES era) however the same doesnt stand for sm64, even ps2 has worse specs than n64. It cant emulate it. Through years, not a single n64 emulator for ps2 has been made. However how many emulators were made for nes for comparison.. tl;dr : a lot. Even nes emulators for symbian have seen the day (actually later versions of symbian) The next fact - smb works well with almost any controller with two buttons - it doesnt need 40 buttons like n64. Just simply two. In the end i think that making challenges for smb can make this game really popular again, that will also benefit in more speedruners count. So, gl on a button challenges. Everyone says they will do it but no one yet shared their record of minimal A presses. So, go on. Savestates allowed. Eventually infinite time hack too. Less hurry. GL

I was going to write a long in response to this, but I don't have it in me right now. Maybe later, maybe not, but I'll still make a short response.

I disagree with a lot of your statements here. SMB1 and SM64 are two very different games. They don't attract a lot of the same people to run both. It's usually one or the other and not both. Sure, there are some people who do both, but you don't find a lot of those. I would expand this to be more along the lines of 2D Mario vs. 3D Mario and not just SMB1 vs. SM64. For me personally, I've never had much interest in running any of the 3D Mario games. I will watch it sometimes, but it doesn't appeal to me as a speedrun that I'd want to learn.

SMB1 is the 11th most active game on the entire site right now (SM64 is 3rd), which suggests to me that it's still popular.

@roopert83 yeah, are very diferent games SM64 and the classic SMB

In all case, fo that of "you don't find a lot of both" and of "2D Mario vs. 3D Mario and not just SMB1 vs. SM64", only a stupid example: @Kosmic , who I would bet is actualy the best speedrunner of all the comunity because of the WRs in Any% and Warpless, top 2nd in in the All-Stars mode of Any% and warpless, top 4 in Minus World Ending, and then like 3 WRs and a 4th place of "The Lost Levels", and a lot of good places and like 3 WRs more in the category extensions Also he have a 2nd place in Any% Warpless, a 4th place in Warpless and also a 4rth place in 100%, all this 3 in "Super Mario 3D Land", and, why not to say, is not bad player in SM64 :) So well

By the way: the 11th most active? I was think SMB1 was in the 4th or 5th place after the SMO SM64 and Celeste... F In all case, is nice

Ps: if Kosmic read this, you are a freaking machine dude
