Various versions

It doesn't seem like I can, unfortunately. Maybe you can as a moderator?

Yeah, I've seen that too. I can imagine it's hard to make anything of it without subtitles - and it doesn't even look like it's possible to suggest any. But hope you're right, that he will answer.

I hope so! Lets see when we find a demo.

So a demo within a demo? Nice finding! But it got me to think that we could also be able to find it as a demo within some of those game-demo-bundles from back in the days. I however don't think there will be the full (30 min) trial within such bundle.

Regarding the "figure out what version this is", I was looking through the data that the game saves, when you save your progress. And in the folder [drive]/ProgramData/IVANOFF/MM2 I had a folder called "2.0" containing the saved games - what is that folder called in your case?

Yup, I have Discord. I'm not sure what makes sense for discussions, but it's at least faster to chat there - I'll try to set it up later on.

Nah I don't think I can :/

Yeah it's a shame, I'm interested in watching them, I always thought YouTube generated automatic subtitles.

That's a good point with the demo note, it could totally be possible that it's hidden in some bundle that doesn't show up on google (Like if it were simply named "5 game demos bundle!" without mentioning the actual game names, I've done a ton of googling for the word 'demo' with all different combinations of the game titles from each language, but still haven't managed to find anything yet.

That's interesting, I don't actually have that folder at all despite having a save near the end of the game. I thought that on my version the saves were stored inside the game install folder but I can't find it there, I'll have a look around soon.

The discord is just for general discussion about speedrunning the game, such as strategies, planning routes, and other stuff, as well as stuff like we're doing with the in-depth analysis of the game.

Maybe it's worth suggesting speedrun.com, maybe they haven't had a similar case before (despite I don't think so). Or else we have to moderate/edit it somewhere else and maybe copy it now and then or refer to the other page - e.g. a fandom.com wiki page?

I just tried to see if it was even possible, but think the author disabled it.

Exactly! In Denmark we have a magasin called "Komputer for alle" that back in the days released such demos - but doesn't seem like a search for that + "Magnus og Myggen" comes up with anything. I however also guess that they wouldn't publish it anywhere online that they published a new (offline) demo.

Interesting! My first thought was that it was located in my users AppData folder - maybe it's located there instead?

Cool! But doesn't the in-depth analysis and alike belong in the forum? And Discord is only for short-term discussions? I might be wrong, I've only used Discord a bit previously.

New Zealand

Yeah that's a good idea, though I suppose if we're all discussion is taking place in the forums/discord then yeah it wouldn't be too hard for one person to add them all into one page.

Yeah it's a shame that the game is so obscure, I feel like most game demos can be found online somewhere, though I guess the age of the game mixed with the fact that it was only sold in Europe means that no one might have thought to post it.

I checked the AppData folder, nothing there either, that's strange. However under RegEdit there is a registry entry for the game named 'SavedGame1' and 'SavedGame2', but neither seem to hold any clear data.

I think it kinda varies, a lot of games that I speedrun have pretty dead forums, most of the posts being questions about run verification, categories, and other stuff related to the speedrun.com page itself, whereas chats such as Discord are used for actually researching and discussing the game itself.

True, i think you're right. It's not a page we'll update that often, I guess.

I guess you're right, those combinations probably mean it can be hard to find a demo out there - at least online. Maybe they are easier to find offline in some way.

That's strange.. Maybe that's from some other game? Maybe you would just have to search for Ivanoff in your entire disc?

Makes sense. I think it's just something about figuring out what makes sense for the time being - I guess Discord especially makes sense if you need to brainstorm what could be optimized.

New Zealand

Yeah, plus there's of course a limited number of versions anyways, for all we know 1.1 and 1.2 could be the only versions with any difference that would affect the speedrun.

That's true, I could definitely see it being the type of thing you'd find at a second-hand shop or a garage sale, unfortunately due to the fact that I don't live in Europe the odds of me stumbling across one is slim to none.

Hmm, I just did that and still nothing, this is really strange, I have no idea where it's storing the saves.

Yeah the way I see it is Discord is good for researching and figuring things out, then the finalized information is then posted to the speedrun page via guides or forum threads

New Zealand

Ahh here we go, I found the saves! Turns out if the game isn't run as administrator, sometimes the files get redirected to a different folder. In this case my saves were in C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Skipper2

Fyn, Denmark

True, but it would still be nice to get a picture/description of the various cases so it's easy to figure out which are 1.1 and 1.2 - even though it's better to have a smaller guide now than none at all.

Exactly. I'll also keep an eye out for them, I could always re-sell them for the same price if anyone would be interested. It's a shame it was only sold in Europe though!

That makes sense. I think it would be nice to have the finalized info somewhere on this site so you won't have to look through a lot of chat and forum messages before finding what you search for.

Okay, never heard about that.. Sounds strang, but it's awesome you found it! But what subfolder(s) was then in the Skipper2 folder?

New Zealand

Yeah that's true, though we can still do that by sending each other the case pictures like we did, I'll probably create the guide today and stick our two cases on it for a start.

Awesome, yeah I feel as though if it had been sold in the US there would more than likely be plenty of copies available and more information on each version.

Yeah for sure, if only speedrun.com had a 'wiki' section, where you could just post information about the game without it necessarily being a guide or anything.

The skipper2 folder contains all of the games files (including the lab folder), but with the saves included. Seems that it's a common thing for all skipper and skeeto games as noted on this page at the very bottom: https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Skipper_%26_Skeeto:_The_Great_Treasure_Hunt

Sounds like a good start, yeah! Let me know if you need any help.

Might be, it's hard to know - but still, for a Danish company it is more widely spread than I would have imagined. And despite it being a bit frustrating, it's also some of the fun, to try and figure out all the hidden features and alike.

That would be awesome! I think the editors in here are a bit too simple.

Ahh, like that - I guess they then updated that functionality for the 1.2 version. And that's a handy site too, didn't know about that - it has a nice overview and a few more details about the game.

I finally got a version of (what I believe is) the first Danish version of the game. The funny thing is that the exe-file doesn't have a version-number. And for all installed variations of the game (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish) the mm2run.exe-file is created 01-09-1997 13:10 and all other files (exe and data-files) are created 01-09-1997 03:00. So this version seems to be some months older than the English version. But it's a shame that it's not possible to figure out the version number of it (at least not via the standard Properties-window).
