I currently have a run where I exited onto home screen after each cup. I was told I can't get it verified until we have a community discussion about if it's allowed. So I figured no point in waiting, we need to talk about this. If the times are different for digital vs cartridge then the answer should be no home screen. Same with new 3ds vs 3ds. But if it is no then what happens to all the runs that did it? It wouldn't be fair to keep them up! The only solution i could see then is a leaderboard reset. I'm not saying to do that, I'm just saying that might be what happens if your not allowed to use the home screen in a run.
Making a subcategory for what would probably be like a 30 second difference in an hour and a half long run is a stupid idea, we should either ban it or allow it. I'm leaning on the side of banning it since it introduces o3DS and n3DS loading time differences and, again, it barely makes a difference anyway.
I completely agree but what happens to the runs that have used the homescreen already before it was banned?
Runs can be resubmitted if necessary. And it seems like those who have spoken here want it to be banned. And to respond to fire, on n3ds I believe it saves about 1 minute 30 seconds, and only about half that on o3ds
My personal stance is that resets between cups shouldn't be allowed. They introduce differences based on hardware while having no impact on gameplay. I don't think it's worthwhile to allow resets, because all hardware being equal is conducive to healthier competition, and sacrificing that for a few seconds of loading times/screen transitions doesn't seem worth it.
To my knowledge, no existing runs (with video) on the leaderboards have resets.
FlipRun if you're referring to the Mushroom Cup guide, I haven't forgotten it, I just haven't gotten around to adding that part
So, I thought this should actually be addressed, and that community verdict should be actually tracked. So here is a poll on whether home menu skip should be allowed: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeTAQ-CtEa5hQ9rKjOZmK8bwDUWsZimd9KM747DSFJOruA_LA/viewform?usp=sf_link
I see no plusses to having home menu allowed but I do see negatives. A poll is not a terrible idea it's just not necessarily needed. I will vote for it being banned.
Several months ago, I was running using cup resets as opposed to A spamming (I've done the ladder since returning to the category a couple of weeks ago). I use and Old 3DS XL with cartridge, and in my experience, it saves a little under 1 minute and 30 seconds in total, contrary to MKWilliam's claim. With that being said, I'm not exactly sure console difference has that much of an effect on loading times, seeing as, with A spamming, you have to deal with 64 loading screens (one after selecting "Next Race" and another after skipping through the course introduction). Therefore, even if the difference of loading times were a mere one second between Old and New 3DS, I would be losing over a minute to a New 3DS user (which I'm pretty sure isn't the case, seeing as the WR holders for both the glitch and no-glitch categories use old 3DS's). I doubt this would be any different with cup resets.
To respond to obsidiaus, the poll is to have an official community standpoint so that a decision based on that can be made. To respond to spearmeister, the world records use o3DS, but do not use the home menu in their runs. In game the loading times are the same. n3ds loads the home screen faster, saving time after each cup.
