Pokemon Blue All Trainers Category Routing

I'm not sure why Pokemon Blue was chosen over Red on the Pokemon Speedrunning message board, and as it's quiet over there. I thought if there was still the same level of interest it might generate a few response over here.

It's not the most optimized route, but I'm hoping if more people take a look at it, we can get something cool going for the category, as I love the idea.

http://pastebin.com/n7gjeMeG - This is what I have worked out up until the end of Route 11 before SS Anne, with Squirtle being the starter. this does miss out the Lass outside Mt. Moon but as you need Surf to get her, I'm not sure whether it would be quicker late game to get her and beat the Jr. Trainer in the grass at the same time later in the game.

Nottinghamshire, England

I don't know much about this category, but I feel like going back to fight trainers later in the game will be used a lot especially if beating the game is required?

In that case Red is probably faster because Nidoking would save a load of time with thrash if you kept it for trainers later (and horn drill obviously)

I've had the idea since I began looking at a route for something like this a few days ago, of a two man team between a Nidoking and Blastoise, which would require a Safari Zone Nidorino, where Nidoking would do a lot of the Glitchless stuff and you could use Blastoise for most of the trainers, but it feels like it would be more time consuming and slower this way than with just one Pokemon.

The only reason I've been shy also to use a Nidoking is I'm not quite sure how the PP usage would work for like a Route 3 and there seems to be a lot more to play with, with Wartortle/Blastoise.

Wales

Going on the whole Nidoking idea which would obviously mean using Red, I had an idea that Charmander might be faster as a starter Pokemon because he would have Ember before leaving Viridian Forest, I'm not sure how it would work exp/pp wise yet, but it would mean that Charmander would be fast for Route 2 as well and Nidoran/rino would take over after that, considering there's an Ether by the Lass on Route 3, and an Max Ether in SS Anne, I would think you could easily make it to Celadon City by just using Thrash.

Obviously that would mean getting Lapras from the Silph employee since you got Charmander instead of Squirtle. Then there's the pewter gym, where Squirtle had most of the advantage in any% glitchless (bubble before Brock does require additional exp, such as, say, a wild level 2 pidgey). But with all trainers, the extra exp is there to maybe get Nido ready for Brock; Yellow glitchless catches him at level 6 on route 2 (instead of level 4 on route 22) and levels him up (with the yellow-exclusive trainer) to 13 to get double kick in time for Brock, maybe substitute the out-of-the way trainer for the Y-exclusive one but you're switching to charm so that may still be not enough exp for double kick.

Unless you fight rival on route 22 (which is avoided in yellow glitchless), then it may be enough

And no, did not mean the one after viridian gym which is forced.

Routing for a yellow game would be fun to route as well, but with Red I've gone with a much different idea since my last post with Squirtle being used as the starter, as he's only required to get past Brock and the Rival and then picking up Nido. I haven't mapped out everything with a Nido route and it obviously will get a lot easier with a route when knowing when to use the Elixir's and Ether's as I haven't used many of them so far, and I feel I could cut out some of the centers.

http://pastebin.com/s4Xz10dx - Few notes though, I think Bubblebeam, Mega Punch, and Rock Slide aren't gonna be necessary like I originally thought, and instead I'd be using Water Gun, Horn Attack and Thunderbolt (in certain areas), though I'm not sure at what point Earthquake might come into it yet as I've only come up to the end of Lavender Tower. I've popped down points where I've picked up certain items as I'm not sure whether Body Slam for example would be needed/more useful later in the run.

I've got some new ideas of how to cut out some of the centres, maintain red bar and to make the route a lot more fluid, I haven't figured it out yet completely but I think I'd be able to swap between 2 moves at some point which would cut out some centres on certain routes though it would mean using X Accuracies but that would probably help to maintain a red bar as well, but I've mapped out in my head from maintaining a red bar from Misty right up until the end of Lavender tower which includes cycling road and safari zone, I'm not completely sure how it all fits together yet. It should use PP more effectively and speed up the run considerably from what I had going before, and I figure the four move set would be Thunderbolt / Water Gun / Thrash / Leer up to a certain point probably before getting the Pokeflute.

Since 2 days ago I thought I'd give those interested an update on the route I have with the ideas, I've remapped some of the PP and Item usage and am up to after Lavender Tower, I'm not sure how well some of it would work out in a run and whether it would be more idealistic outside of a run than realistic inside of a run.

http://pastebin.com/znCWQeYW - I have mapped it out to include a lot of red bar which would cut down the Category time significantly as my previous route didn't include any, I've found out I can engineer red bar from the Mankey on Nugget Bridge and help keep it through either the Pidgey's and Rattata's on Route 25, if not you can always re-engineer it from Slowpoke. or later at Misty, this should help to maintain a Red bar right up until before Rock Tunnel where you could Leer 6/7 times off of the Slowpokes as the attacks are consistent where Cubone's aren't.

This route would also require to teach Bubblebeam over Water Gun (When Teaching Cut/Dig) and Rock Slide over Leer (After Celadon Mart), I found I should have enough Thunderbolts to go through Lavender Tower with, and use Rock Slide mainly for the Haunters, Night Shade doesn't end a run depending how close you are to levelling yourself up out of red bar.

I have an idea to swap between Submission and Take Down which would require X Acc's which in turn would help to maintain Red bar, though I haven't figured out if it's needed or better to find a different method for better PP usage. As I haven't quite figured out where I would use the TM's Skull Bash, Body Slam and Earthquake, or some of the Elixer's/Ether's, so that idea might not even be needed.

After Lavender Tower, the idea is to do Cycling Road, Safari Zone (Dig PokeCentre and Pick up the 3 Trainers by Cerulean), and then Pallet Town down to Pokemon Mansion, though I'm not sure what comes next yet, I would assume Gaming Corner then Blaine then Koga, and the routes all around the Seafoam islands before knocking off Erika, Sabrina, Fighting Gym and Silph Co. I may be missing one or two areas in this later game planning.

Of course, Silph Co. before Sabrina.

Some of my ideas have been stupid as I've forgotten certain mechanics, unless I can hold off centering, the whole warping back to before Rock Tunnel is a dumb idea. Also I'm not sure if it's better to do Celadon Game Corner earlier as I can max the PP Ups on Thrash before then, but this is the order I've established and sticking with at the moment for my first run, though I've still got the later game to plan for, and I need to do a Trainer check to make sure I'll be hitting everything, plus I've not mapped out items yet, as I've figured out I don't need to go with the swapping TM idea. Plus I haven't figured out what I can do with all the Ethers and Elixers yet so there will be more to explore after I'm done and still some work to do on incorporating the Rare Candies.

From the Beginning - Rival 1 -- Viridian Forest -- Brock/Viridian Rival -- Route 3 -- Mt. Moon -- Nugget Bridge -- Route 25/Misty -- Route 6 -- Route 11 -- SS Anne -- Surge -- Route 9-10 -- Rock Tunnel -- Lavender Town -- Route 8 -- Celadon City, Lavender Tower -- Cycling Road (PP Up, Max Elixer pick up) -- Route 18 -- Safari Zone -- Celadon Game Corner/Rocket Hideout --Route 16 Cycling Road -- Route 17 -- Celadon Gym -- Fuchsia City -- Route 15 -- 3 Missed Trainers at Cerulean City/Rock Tunnel

The later game Idea after that will look something like that - Seafoam Islands Part 1 -- Pallet Town to PokeMansion -- Silph Co. -- Blaine -- Seafoam Islands Part 2 -- Fighting Gym and Sabrina -- Viridian Gym -- Victory Road -- Elite 4

Edit: Another note about my route is it's very specific, as to using PP, so it's not ideal to take certain chances on four-turn thrashes, so there is a lot to improve on even after I complete my notes that include some Red Bar strategies.

http://pastebin.com/U1h94jLf - So these are my complete rough notes, Still a lot of changes to be made, as I haven't mapped out the items as a lot of useless items I picked up along the way, and need to do a trainer check to make sure I have all the trainers in the route. This does include Red bar strategies. Will be doing a run later, probably a very safe one.

Edit: Missed one in Rock Tunnel, shouldn't be too big of an issue though. Edit: http://pastebin.com/Mqsy7zTi - Updated route with Trainer in Rock Tunnel, If I've missed anymore out, please let me know, and I'll look over it. Edit: I'm going to be doing a dry run through, and clear up my notes as somethings aren't too clear or multiple in some places.

My SS Anne was a little fucked up with the PP management as well, so it does need some clearing up with my notes.

Edit: So I know what I was doing wrong up till SS Anne, my notes weren't accounting for the Max Ether I used, so I now need to take a look at Rock Tunnel, with the extra trainer, which shouldn't be a huge bother.

- I finally completed a run with my notes and they need a serious cleanup, I messed up my splits when talking in chat lol, and they didn't save anyway so I had to go and redo them, but there is a lot of improvement to be made and I think it's a viable category for the future if more people decide to run it, my time without the Red bar strategies is 5 hrs 48 mins, and I think there's a big improvement to be made.
