Searching for short or long speedruns? I made a tool

Hi all

I made this website https://speedrunsearch.com It pulls data from speedrun.com but you can filter on WR times which I miss on this site. Additionally the genres are a bit more organised.

Have fun and let me know what you think.

I disagree with the recommended streaming equipment.

Holy crow, you beat me to it! I've been building mine as a chrome extension, but I've been struggling with the API callback because you can't opt out of the "previous" and "next" options if you just want them all in one lump.

I think my biggest concern / criticism is that the site seems somewhat out of date. Are you pulling from a database or using the API when a user visits a game page? At the very least, you should use the API to check if the information is in date when a user lands on a given page, or if you're using anything that works like Unix, I think it would be prudent to set up a cron to auto-update.

Second biggest concern is that you seem like you made an account here for the sole purpose of making that post, which is kinda sketch IMHO.

Third, as stated above, where do you get the "recommended streaming equipment" suggestions? They seem a bit random, though the links to Amazon are accurate, which is kinda weird considering how much of the actual SR information is out of date. The most straightforward way I can think of to get those links is the run a search on Amazon of what runners recommend here, then use regex to parse the html, but even that would result in plenty of errors. I mean, there's no time/cost efficient way (that I'm aware of, and it's one of my specialties) how you would be able to make those links as accurate as they are using just that info and the Amazon front end.

For instance, one of your links is to a "blue yeti microphone", but when you search that on Amazon, you get a different product and url for each different color of microphone. Furthermore, the "sponsored" item for that search is "Blue Microphones Blackout Yeti USB Microphone with Knox Studio Arm and Pop Filter", which is not likely what any of these runners are using.

So.

Either you are the best data miner the world has ever seen or you are actually working for Amazon and putting that as a priority over SR content, and that's not good for street cred, bro.

The equipment recommendations does indeed need some rework. I did some research on general streaming equipment and the same links are shown on every game page. It would be better if capture cards are based off the platform of the game.

I haven't opensourced it yet. But your project sounds very cool. Similar games would be a great addition to the site, shoot me an email?

I have 2 things you should fix:

  1. Not all games in the site are there.
  2. Please list the games in alphabetical order

  1. It's been 4 days I think since I synced all data. I'll start a resync once I get home, sorry for that.
  2. This is on my TODO list, currently it's ordered by popularity (number of players who ran the game in the last month). I'll add more options, including alphabethically.

The Elgato is good for HD games, but a lot of games don't benefit from that as they're SD. A good SD card is the GV-USB2, which is pretty close to plug and play. For anything 5th gen or earlier, that'd be the capture card to recommend- and it's perfectly sufficient for 6th gen and Wii games as well. Microphones are nice, but a headset works perfectly fine and is generally going to be cheaper. They aren't strictly required to stream either. A webcam is 100% not required to stream and should probably be marked optional. Streaming recommendations make no mind to PC (or mobile/handheld) runs, which don't require a capture card. Though, DS and 3DS capture cards exist, they aren't easily available and certainly aren't available on Amazon. That's where recommending a good camera in its place would be most useful.

On the searching side of things- "popular platforms" weren't useful to me. "pl" recommended PS3 and PS4, and I know that PS1 and PS2 games are more commonly run, especially PS1. I don't like that there's no way to search for specific category types, such as any% or 100% (yes, I know not all games have a 100% category and for some games the 100% category is > 100%- I still think that this sort of search functionality would be nice to have even if it was somewhat buggy. After all, the difference between any% and 100% can be hours.)

On the game pages, two things don't work properly. Subcategories only show the fastest run for the main category (see Link to the Past) and any special formatting put into the rules field (such as bold, bullet points, or even just new lines/enters/returns) are ignored on your site. Also, miscellaneous categories aren't shown as miscellaneous- this is probably an important distinction to make.

Thanks, that's great feedback. I'll look into these things to make the site better.

will you also add a filter with the price of the game?

Some games have different prices, expecially the older games.

Cam is definitely not a requirement for streaming. Some of the most successful streamers I know, I've never seen their faces. And it's no big deal, either.
