i mean it's not a real competive speedrun category, i just used a cheat that show the credits

other that using a cheat the run is legit (more legit than odyssic's emu cheated runs Kappa )

i also question myself with is it any% ? some games let you show the credits (and the the final cutscene credits) from the option menu and you can't say that beat the game. I only did this run because it's a good meme

my opinion on the credits warp we might find in III and VC, is that if it doesn't show the final cutscene it's not really any% BUT if this is found i would still do a credits warp run however it's named

Here's another run that triggers both the credits AND the "you finished the game, congratulations" screen early, but it clearly doesn't count as beating the game. (59 seconds into the run)

Credits are meaningless without context. The goal of a game is not to reach the credits, it is to get to the end of the game (which is usually accompanied by credits, but not always.) In gta3 this is The Exchange; it wraps up the storyline, it is the final mission in a chain of missions, it sets certain variables to 'true' and it rolls music + credits. All these are INDICATORS that you have beaten the final mission and thus the game, and do not themselves mean having beat the game.

It is clear that The Exchange signifies the end of the game, therefore: Passing The Exchange == Beating the game.

The only question is, what does 'passing the exchange' mean? It is quite obvious that if you instapass it like blowfish and mark the mission as completed, it is passed and thus the game has been beat. Rolling credits during Liberator does not seem to instapass The Exchange.

Other people would say 'start the final cutscene that incidentally also shows credits' counts as having passed the mission. Heck, this is the definition that's been used for 14 years now, and its a fair enough definition.

So there are multiple definitions of 'passing The Exchange', and I don't see a reason to pick one over the other for the any% definition. Both definitions work, just achieve whichever you want. However, merely rolling credits during Liberator, which does nothing other than print text on the screen, is not one of those definitions. It doesn't mark The Exchange as complete, it doesn't roll the cutscene, and you can still do The Exchange afterwards and roll the credits again.

any% literally just means to beat the game in any way. Scrolling text on the screen with gameplay still going on is obviously not beating the game. There are some games that has credit warps or wrong warps that warps you to the credits but you don't unlock anything. I'm assuming you unlock EVERYTHING when warping to the credits or doing NG+ 100% just like you would if it was done "normally". If so in my opinion, it should be just any%/100% in their respective category whether it's NG or NG+. [small]But there's kinda a loophole here since there is no "normal" any% and the warp can happen at anytime and you'll skip over some things that you would normally unlock without the warp.[/small]

And by everything I mean the things you unlock for beating the game so the last sentence might be useless.

The fact of the matter is, if something is unlocked by "beating the game", and you don't unlock it by performing an early credit warp, then you haven't beaten the game, plain and simple. If the game doesn't think you've beaten the game, then you haven't beaten the game. A reward is confirmation. It's basically the developer's way of congratulating you for beating their game. It's not the player(s) that determine what beating the game means. (Not directed at anyone in particular ->) Oh, you say it is up to the player? Alright, then please record a video of you stating to the camera that you want to see the credits roll after the first mission AND unlock the tank, and then proceed to start a new game and show these things happening.

In III's case, it's the spawning of the tank at Phil's, correct? If the early credit warp doesn't unlock this reward, then you haven't beaten the game. All you've done is perform some glitch which means nothing. If there exists a glitch that has nothing to do with the credits, but does unlock the tank, would performing this glitch equal beating the game? Does stealing the first place trophy off of a table placed at the finish line of a marathon, mean you won the race?

I feel it's a combination of the credits/reward. If a glitch literally warps you to the end of the game and you unlock the reward for "beating the game", then that should be sufficient for Any%. Otherwise, it's all just fancy tricks which mean nothing.

As I said, the rewards (tank, scrolling text + music, etc.) are just indicators that you won, same for the IRL trophy on the table.

There may be legal ways to obtain the prize (glitching the door of the tank, giving a large sum of money to the actual winner of the race and buying their trophy). One can also roll the credits, or have an interview with the local sports network before actually finishing. This doesnt mean they beat the game/won the race.

One could also glitch the tankspawn and prevent it from spawning, or they could trip after finishing and knock over the trophy and have it shatter into a million pieces. This still means they beat the game/won the race, despite having nothing to show for it.

I still say marking suburban as passed is the best technical definition of any%, used interchangeably with shooting down catalina, picking up maria, and fading into the cutscene (both are valid definitions imo, and as I said I dont see why only one of them needs to be used). If a glitch is found that does stuff and it does not meet either of these criteria, I wouldn't call it having beat the game.
