What the best way to record speed runs on Xbox?

It's an Xbox One? If so you can stream your gameplay directly onto Twitch through the Twitch app I believe. I don't know exactly how that works but I know it can be done.

Otherwise your options are pointing a camera at your TV or getting a capture card.

If it’s an Xbox One you can use the twitch app to stream directly to twitch.

Otherwise, a capture card is the best (and really only) way to capture the feed directly from the console.

If you go the direct streaming from the xbox route, be aware that if your connection is meh it can cause the vod to skip in unusual ways, where rather than it freezing from dropped frames it'll skip right on through to the next available frame. an example of what it'd look like, that specific instance skipped 3.5ish seconds jumping from one part to the other

If you use an external HD or even just a USB flashdrive you can DVR until you run out of space

I believe that’s only up to an hour of recording when using an external, on top of it having to be for media storage. Can’t use one that’s formatted specifically for the Xbox one

Wasn't aware of the time limit since I've not done it myself, but yes you are right.

Either get a capture card and use something like OBS to have a timer in the video when recording your game/run or edit one into the run with video editing software after recording it. Wasn't even aware battlefront II went that route requiring a timer, only having the ability to add a timer in through video editing software would make it pretty pointless :P

That's a silly rule tbh, but what you'll have to do is load your video into a video editor and add a timer - I use a free programme called ShotCut to do that to my videos (I swear I should get paid for the amount of times I've recommended it lol). You can either overlay another video on top (of a timer) or apparently it has its own timer you can add in editing.

It's easier than I make it sound lol, if you do end up going down that route and have any issues I'd be happy to help out.

When push comes to shove, you can use a webcam as I did for a while https://www.speedrun.com/sotn/run/yl9k39ny
