About the Knife

Game has only been out for a few days and alot has already been found. Before the boards will be open for submissions we have to talk about the knife and subcategories.

We've already planned to seperate the boards between OoB and No OoB. But now when we have the High FPS Knife it becomes tricky.

First thing, the name of the seperation cant be named "OoB and No OoB" anymore so best name for it would be "Glitched and Glitchless".

You could add yet another subcategory which will both look like a mess and it will also create more categories: OoB & No High FPS Knife which probably will be the least popular category on the board and even more categories for console which barely makes a difference.

Personally I consider the High FPS Knife to be a glitch. I cant possibly imagine that the developers intended for the knife the be like the 2nd most powerful weapon in the game.

What do you guys think?

Should High FPS Knife be accepted across the PC board or should we have a category for "No OoB + No High FPS Knife"?

Knifing on Variable frame rate is a wallet check, not a skill check. That's my opinion.

I don't like the prospect of saying you can't use a specific weapon, especially if it is a base weapon (non-NG+ or DLC). Therefore, I think a category is the best compromise.

Personally I see FPS knife and OoB as glitches but I wouldn't separate them out further. So I would separate it as Glitched (OoB, high fps knife, etc.) and Glitchless (no OoB, no high fps knife (maybe fps limit?)).

I'd have to go with a Glitched and Glitchless category. The knife trick completely takes out skill for bosses.

Developers have been tying things to framerate for years, so there's a very high chance it was intentional. The outcome of the knife being powerful is the unintended part. For this reason, the knife damage looks to be an exploit, not a glitch.

Personally I think that you should be able to abuse such exploits regardless of the pay to win factor, as speedrunning is a hobby you need to put money into just like any other. But there's no guarantee i'll ever do runs of this game so i wouldn't regard my opinion if i was a runner.

Regardless of my opinion, having oob/no oob/oob no knife exploit/no oob no knife exploit is super convoluted. But as for "glitchless" this knife exploit should not matter at all

Any%, and 60fps Glitchless would be my vote

Glitched (including Knife FPS.) and Non-Glitched 60fps, imo.

You can still get huge FPS on a potatoe via the graphic settings.

The knife as much as it could be intentional seems more than likely unintentional - the knife is just feeding back more "hits" due to higher frame refreshing meaning the game is refreshing the actually time it's on the enemy more often. I'd still assume it as a glitch, or treat it as a glitch - which would then have Glitchless runs capped at 60 FPS for fairness in that regard but glitched is anything goes as per it starts. In Any% glitchless - knife can still be used but the game needs to be limited to 60 fps - and there needs to be a way for it to be confirmed in 60fps (maybe flashing/changing settings at the start of a run to confirm).

We also have stairskating so maybe "Major Glitches" and "No Major Glitches (60fps)" would be better?

So far we only have Any% but if there are more we got an Extended Category page on SRC for it.

Glitchless wouldn't be an accurate name because of the presence of minor glitches like animation canceling on stairs. "No Major Glitches" also isn't entirely accurate because high FPS knifing isn't really all that major, stair animation canceling saves more time over the entire length of the run.

Personally, I'm a fan of breaking games and seeing the absolute fastest strategies possible, so I'd be doing any% runs but I don't see any problem with having separate categories for people who want to run a more limited ruleset that they prefer.

Major glitches, all OOB's & uncapped FPS

No Major Glitches, stair skating and locked 60 FPS.

I'd also suggest that anyone running No Major Glitches should enable the FPS counter in steam.

We could just go with 2 subcats: OoB & No OoB 60 & variable

That would solve the problem for everyone but its not the most beautiful solution in the book. Dont think there is another solution without compromising anything

Limity framerate 60Fps category no glitch. No limity in category glitch%

In my opinion for two separate categories it should be a category limited to 60 fps (this will create fairness for everyone on pc and be able to have similar strats) and then the 2nd category can be any% (variable frame rate and anything goes) Although I feel like the downside to this is that the 60 FPS category would be less popular, making the runners in that category feel left out.

Although I don’t know much of the out of bounds, if OoB requires switching to low FPS then my opinion doesn’t work probably

Non-Glitched 60fps please.

I'm ok with locked 60fps, but why not 120 fps instead?

stair skating is considered a glitch? imo is just bad game development

It's impossible to lock the game at 120 unless a 3rd party program is used

Sweden

99% of people will also achive 60fps for a more equal playing field

60 fps then, better to avoid 3rd party programs
