so like, id say everyone knows that you can't choose north korea as your location for fairly obvious reasons, yet there is this guy who successfully did it last year, how did he do it?

What are the reasons that one would be unable to select North Korea as his or her location? If it's obvious, I'm oblivious. Help me get up to speed.

Israel

Understood. Didn't really tried it...

I guess that either (just hypothesis):

  • The account in question chose the country before a validation against it was added in the site
  • The country was changed through the API and it doesn't (or didn't in the past) have a server-side validation for countries
  • Someone changed the country directly in the database.

It's simple. If a user's network information matches the network information used in North Korea, then you should be able to select it as country. Hence the error if you are not. That said, the reason for that to specifically occur on the North Korea flag (and perhaps a few other countries) and not occur for other countries is likely due to those country laws. As I know for example internet access in North Korea is very strict, if not prohibited at all. Therefor the site should abide by those laws and should be cautious to flag users under those countries.

I had North Korea flag before but got removed for unknown reasons :S Since a update of the site eveyrbody who had North Korean flag got changed to No Countries except this guy.

Antarctica

Interesting question. There is at least one VPN company that offers North Korean IPs(they pretend to have physical servers somewhere on the Chinese border, though that seems unlikely), but that's really not something I would try myself.
