I have been really interested in speedrunning lately, but I haven't the slightest clue what game to start with. Any suggestions? Preferably something easily emulated.
Start with games you like.
Here i'm just listing what I would like to speedrun because I don't know what kind of games you like:
- Mario Party games
- Mario Kart games
- Super Mario 64
- Sonic
I'd advise to only run a game you enjoy. I don't think it should matter whether the game has already got documentation on it, or a leaderboard.
I've generated 3 questions to ask yourself when deciding on a game. If you can answer no to any of them, you might not enjoy the game:
- Does the category use speed strats you don't think you'd enjoy? (perfect pause glitches, menu navigation, glitching, etc.)
- Is it a game you can see playing the first section of over and over again for many, many hours without getting bored/angry?
- Is the length of the category around the general length you would want in a speedrun?
I think those are the most important to answer and I wouldn't put as much weight onto if you used to play the game as a kid or not.

As I always do when this question is asked, I recommend Resident Evil 2. Depending on the console the average run time is around an hour to an hour 15. Easy to learn, fun to master.
