what is a good and achevable goal to work towards for a beginner? It looks daunting, so what were some goals you worked towards when you just started? Im asking because i tend to get mad when things are far away from so, so i want an achevable goal to work towards for my 1st check point i guess, and should i go down in increments of 10 or 20 or something else?

Depends how much work you want to put in and how far you want to eventually take it. My big goal when I started was sub hour which took some time. But many of my first times were around 90 minutes, so I made other little goals at 80 minutes, 70 minutes etc.

Regardless any progress is always rewarding, but you’ll probably get a good idea of what you want once you start running a bit :)

I'm a beginner and I'm running 100% mainly due to the easy nature of the late game (but also it forces me to learn lots of different strats and areas of the game). My first goal is under 2 hours, which is a reachable goal with easy techniques.

When I start a game, I learn the route first (not any real specific tricks unless they are mandatory). Finish a run or two and get the route memorized. Then look into specific strats or techniques you want to improve. Re-assess goals as they come.

Play first to learn and have fun, the time will come down in the process.

I'm also a Newb. Been doing this for fun with a few friends planned to get together to try and beat the 3 hour in game challenge and save the animals. We all sat down with a proper nerd fest during an afternoon/evening. Junk food and a half time break to try and sub 3 hour. We did it in 2:15 and 2:30 and another did not finish.

Since then, I've been trying to beat my friends and practising learning all the tips and tricks online, I was getting 1:30 in game time, then 1:15, I was finally nearing 1:00 in game time which I wanted to beat. (I kept getting 1:02 on several runs in a row) Finally got 0:56 in game time simply by improving bosses and forgetting about health/enemies in the right places and speeding up more, and then that was 1:14 real time. So tried to get 1:10 real time, which I did, which gave me 0:52 in game time. Now I'm trying to beat 0:50 in game time, ultimate goal for me is 1 hour real time.

All of this for fun really, nothing more. If you're not having fun doing it, why are you doing it?

A few tricks that have gotten me thus far: Mock Ball Super Missles, Mock Ball Ice Beam, Bubble Mountain Skip.

Then I did the Early Power Bomb after Crocomire with shine spark (you can also just jump the gap it transpires). Learning to do the bosses quicker.

Where people do the ocean fly, you can shine spark twice instead with the double tap shine spark technique. This enables you not to get the grapple beam which saves you a fair bit of time.

The nice thing about this game, is there are so many routes, so many glitches/routes to exploit. So you can ease your way in. A lot of improvement can also be done without some of the hard glitches, and improving on the bosses/rooms.

Anyways, small achievable goals. Trying to reach the nearest 10 or 5 minutes every time either in-game or real time I think is a good start. And remember to practice the hard bits before starting.

Usually I run though a few bosses that kill me, a few of the hard techniques. And then go.

Tutorials: Mock Ball Supers: Early Ice Beam: Short Charge (for ocean fly, or to get to the wrecked ship without ocean fly): Ocean Fly:

And the entire game explained how to do fast, look at the top pinned comment for a list of times on which room:

I started to speedrunning Super Metroid last year (100% item collection), and the first trick that I learned is mockball, the easy method (touching the ceiling). That would be a basic and an esential trick to start speedrunning this game, I guess.
