Trouble with Soft Drifting

Hi, I've been playing the game for a couple of months and just recently discovered soft drifting...I've checked the guide and also several youtube videos but I just can't seem to soft drift.

I can drift fine by making a hard left and right but I would love to improve my game. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What is soft drifting? I’ve heard if inside-drift and outside-drift, but never a soft drift.

It’s a technique @linny356, not a type of vehicle. I wrote a technique guide that you can find in the guides section for this game, and I explained soft-drifting as well as I can there.

I might have been confused from reading other people's comments on soft drifting. I had the impression that soft drifting allows the player to spark a mini turbo faster than regular drifting.

@Pianist15 So that’s how you’re so good at the game! I mean, you should be a Mod!

Glad I could help, Grateful. You're right that it's not a way of charging MTs faster, but rather just more efficient relating to the amount you've turned. That means soft-drifting makes it easier to charge up MTs on turns where it would otherwise be difficult/impossible/slow to do so.

Yeah, I've played this game for a long time and picked up quite a lot. I'm a mod on Discord, but I don't really have time to moderate on this site :P

Is it common to have games with mods who run them? I don't think I've seen it, but I'm new to the community.

Washington, USA

Yeah, mods for any speedgame are typically active in that community, which generally means they do runs themselves. That’s the case for all games I know of, at least.

Is it possible to Soft Drift in the straightaway at the end of the Yoshi track (I forgot the name) in Egg Cup?

Washington, USA

Yes, soft-drifting around the last corner of Yoshi Circuit helps build the SMT faster on both 150cc and 200cc. If you hold hard right instead of soft-drifting, then you turn tighter than the track and have to move the control stick to the left from time to time, which increases the time it takes the SMT to charge overall. This isn’t the only application of soft-drifting, but it’s a major principle and can be used on many relatively gentle turns.

I will have to practice this in my TT records! I never realized the behind-the-scenes that went on!

What’s your PB on Yoshi Circuit 200cc? Mine is a high 1:19

Maryland, USA

My record for 150cc is a 1:55.671.

I’ve been playing a lot of ACNH so I haven’t got any tine for runs.

Washington, USA

You sure that’s for 200cc, Linny?

I don’t often time trial much besides shroomless practice, so my best time is 1:20.245 without shrooms (my regular shroom time is actually slower lol, must be from a long time ago).

Dunno if anyone said this, but if you use the not quite up/down stick position as you would normally use the neutral stick position, it's a bit easier (like instead of going hard right to left, push up and left like up is accelerate and use the limit of the stick to control Ur movement, kinda... Does that make sense or am I just making it more confusing? Basically moving the stick in a circular direction, rather than linearly across the circle.

@Pianist15, I am really bad at Yoshi Circuit 200cc.

Washington, USA

@RazielNoraa tbh I do think that explanation overcomplicates it a bit lol... Just hold around 10/2 o’ clock, like I wrote in the guide. I think the original asker had their question answered.

@linny356 Fair enough, I guess. It definitely is a hard course on 200. Sorry about that.

If you watch my 200cc bonus cups mush only, (not sure if the vid is still available) I lost around 10-20 seconds on the course.
