Leaving the mod team

For the last few days me and @if_and_while had a disagreement regarding the pause rule: "Pause is allowed, but pauses abuse and extended periods of time spent in the pause will invalidate the run" A known runner to the community submitted his run with a 41 second pause and @if_and_while rejected the run and I ask why he did it he said its due to the pause he said it could be "malicious" lets be real if someone was going to cheat they would have that stuff all set up way before they would start the run but that's why we as mods watch the runs to see if a run is legit I suggested that we should introduce a "grace" period for pausing due to RL stuff that could happen ( need a toilet, phone call etc etc ) after some back and forth @if_and_while said "if you wanna do something about it proceed by yourself. I have already said mine." I then said that we should make a post on SRC and explain the rule and word it properly and let the community vote for what they think is best and since then he just been ghosting me refusing to budge or do something about it.

So from today bois ill be leaving the mod team due to the incompetent of the mods.

To the community I hope you all understand I would be more then happy to come back but not under this mod team any time soon.

To if_and_while its such a shame we cant come to a agreement as a team and community and not making the pause rule more easy to understand.

To be honest, I think it's a mistake that you leave the mod team for such a reason. As far as I can tell you've been a good mod, just like the others, and you should keep doing it. We've been through this in the past and I've always met the news of a mod leaving the team with grief.

I do my best to keep with the community make sure everyone is ok and making sure that runs can get processed faster but I can't mod this game while 1 super mod is non existent and the other mod refuses to to host a mod/community vote for the greater good was this not why we got rid of the old mods?

I agree that we should make a community vote (a fixed time limit of 'grace' period like 1 minute) and come up with unambiguous pause rule to avoid any confusion in the future. Runners can state the reasons for pausing on the description when submitting (eg: stuff IRL). I had a 20 seconds pause in one of my old runs (https://www.speedrun.com/dino2/run/yde1w0wm , 1:50 - 2:10) and it was still accepted by if while. I would like to know why it wasn't rejected. Does that imply there's a 'hidden' rule that says 20 seconds is allowed while 41 is not?

Either gotta have a rule where you state how long someone can pause for or you just have no rule. Would 40 seconds have been okay but 41 not or is it just how's mod feeling on the day.

Oh well. This is a four topics in one post thing.

  1. What to do about that time pause rule
  2. What to do about the mods
  3. Personal disagreement with one other mod and Xtra leaving moderation.
  4. What Mods should decide on their own and what the community should decide with votes

I will start with number 3 just saying that @xtra2Ez you should not really leave the moderation just for this small misunderstanding with if_and_while that can be solved. I hope that you change your mind. You contribution to the community is absolutely valuable.

  1. My two cents about the rule. I think that was me writing that rule in the first place specifically. There were no other indications about pauses before that. That came out after a discussion about pause buffering and the rule was agreed with the community at that time (even how to phrase the rule). It was a good idea to have a ballpark rule to avoid abuses. I also feel it would have been and it will be a bad idea and a mistake stating how much exactly is too much (5s 10s 20s etc..), leaving it instead to a free interpretation from the Mods team because every case is different. Let's assume the limit was 60s... Would 10 6s pauses allowed? What about 60 pauses by 1s etc.. etc.. you get my point. To many gray areas and countless reasons for a pause. If I were still a mod I would probably consider 41s too much to be honest. That kind of long pauses are usually allowed only in RPGs such as Final Fantasy etc.. That's my opinion.

  2. I can agree Wolf has been absent and if_and_while too severe with rules. Tho i can tell you that if_and_while made massive progress in terms of flexibility compared to the past 😅, while Wolf I don't even know if he is still interested in modding at all. Maybe it would be a good idea just asking, probably now that he can trust the current mod team he would move on. Wolf was instrumental in driving a revolution for the better in leaderboard/rules/community, I cannot thank him enough for that.

  3. I love democracy, but not always everything can be voted. In a small topic like this one it is easy to simpatise with the runner who got the run rejected asking for a "grace" without considering all the nuisances, domino effects and precedents such a decision can generate. I would leave these kind of small decisions to the mod board putting my trust in them. The community should vote for bigger topics.

yo rapix hope your doing good my friend, I would love to come back but what can I do when If_and_while wont even resolve the issue and ghosts me, also I did say as a team(mod)/community vote also had 2 other people agreeing to changing the rule and still shuts it down lol

I will wait to know both sides to come to a conclusion but it´s well known by everyone that i disagree with Wolf and If being mods in the first place without any kind of vote. @xtra2Ez i think u are doing a great job and i will miss you if u leave the moderation (but again, i prefer mods to be chosen by everyone)

So... instead of talk to try to find an agreement u ghost others in the Mod group and u admit it?

This is blowing out of proportion, i don't get all this drama now. The rule was meant to be flexible and forgiving for cases like hitching nose, small emergencies, changing game settings, joypad battery dying etc... Not for things like phone calls, having a number 2 and so on. The rule was left open to interpretation and not defined to keep it flexible and open to Mods discretion.

Whatever the final decision, all this should have been solved between mods (with mods I also mean verifiers) without the need of public drama. I don't know who to blame here, but when I was part of the Mod team we used to have a Discord group between us and decisions were taken together by majority. Not always all Mods agree, so eventually the minority needs to accept the decision. This seems to be just a public squabble between two mods which should have been avoided.

@RapixOnGaming 's point about the rule being flexible and mods discussing about the single case on their own makes sense. The problem is that everybody was okay with approving the specific run except for @If_And_While, and While didn't really ask anybody: he rejected the run on his own.
