Hardest game to speedrun

What is the game, in your opinion, the most difficult to speedrun ?

Not essentially a challenging game. But this can be in any genre. For example: Tales From The Borderland (Telltale Games). This game features a lot of cutscenes that can not be skip.

Or, Big City Stories (Hellfire Games). For those who do not know it, in addition to having very unstable servers, there is nothing to speedrun on this game.

And you ?

There are alot of hard speedgames, but I can't really tell which one is the hardest to run.

For me, the longest I would run would be Pokémon trying to catch em all, but the hardest could possibly be super Mario bros if you are trying for under 5 min

England

... There is literally no comparison between games, because different games have their own elements of gameplay that introduce different kinds of difficulty, and many games aren't optimised so it isn't even clear how 'difficult' it is to get a good run.

In short, I'd say single segment Final Doom: The Plutonia Experiment on Nightmare: https://www.speedrun.com/finaldoom#The_Plutonia_Experiment

In long, difficult how? IMHO:

Difficult in that you have to get super lucky: Mario Party series, Pokemon series

Difficult because you have to make up your run on the fly based on randomness: Diablo II, Blinding of Isaac

Difficult because your timing has to be perfect: Super Meatboy, Guitar Hero / Step Mania series (sped up)

Difficult because you have to execute multiple frame-perfect tricks: Mario Kart 64, Super Mario Bros series

Difficult because it involves a lot of difficult tasks that must be done perfectly in a row: Mirror's Edge, Half-Life, Tony Hawk's Underground 2 on Sick Difficulty, Portal

Difficult because they've been optimized to death and you have to be perfect to even compete with the best score: Legend of Zelda OOT, Super Mario 64, Super Metroid, You Have to Burn the Rope, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Difficult because they are really, really long: Baten Kaitos, Animal Crossing 100%, GTA series 100%, some of the Final Fantasy stuff too

ya Mario party is basically RNG hell

Canada

I'll preach for my game here, but Super Dodge Ball on easy is particularily difficult to improve on.

Sure, it's easy to play and learn. But improvements when nearing the 6 minute mark on easy are scarce. Not only do the RNG Gods have to favor you, but you have to capitalize on every bit of luck the game throws at you.

If you are trying to WR it then probably any of the more popular speedrun games simply because of the amount of work done on them.

Let me throw in McTyson's Punchout on NES. It has been optimized over the years to the point where the whole thing is insane. Especially the whole "who can knockout Tyson in Round 1 the fastest" where people literally run Tyson for years for only 1-2 second improvements. Apparently it requires massive luck and many frame perfect dodge and punches. It seems fairly over the top imho.

If you are trying simply for a speedrun-like time then probably the hardest games on the hardest settings would be good candidates similar to Ninja Gaiden on Master Ninja. Or really shitty hard games like ones for early PCs.

Of course there are differences between segmented and single segment. And some other categories seem especially difficult. Like say Super Metroid on SNES in Reverse Boss order for example.

I also was reading about some PC games that need special configuration so they do not crash. Those I guess would qualify as well.

I agree with coolhandmike because the hardest games to get a wr on are ones that a bunch of people did and have optimized. However I think that one of the hardest games to speedrun is TLoZ BotW, because there are hundreds, maybe thousands of runners on different categories on that game. And even if there weren't, with the way the run is now, it took me over 100 hours of practice just to run plateau% at 44 minutes, and that's just half of any%. Yes, I'm not great at most video games, but Breath of the Wild is my one exception.

I'd say some games like I wanna be the boshy and its variations, Mario 64, Super Metroid, Zelda OOT, all of these for different reasons. Sometimes a game is inherently hard (I mean, you die very fast without much room for error) and sometimes the level of optimization of the run is so high that you'll have a hard time trying to get to that level.

@WanderAgro those are separate types of difficulties - difficulty of a game and difficulty of getting a WR time in a speedrun; and those are not really related to each other.

Any game that has been optimised to death by its speedrunning community, will be hard to get a WR record (or at least very top places on the leaderboard). It doesn't matter if the game itself is hard or easy, for that matter.
