Requesting series/game types for existing games

Sorry about making a second post, I know this must be annoying, but you have Chess on here. If Chess (digital or not) can be accepted, Perplexus should be too. If you don't want the possibility of non-video game things to be on here, Speedrun.com isn't a fitting name because more than just video games can be speedran. Also, for the love of God, Pencil Sharpening Simulator is a thing on here with Real Life%, it is so hypocritical to call accepting Perplexus a mistake. No hate, just a bit annoyed.

If you have the time...It's a small edit but if you could set the GOIME 500 ( http://www.speedrun.com/twow ) Game Type to 'Webgame' that'd be great. Thanks!

United States

I just added a game titled "A ROBLOX Quest: Bloxie Tooie" and it was listed as a fangame even though its a sequel (by the same creator) to the first one which was listed as a modification. If someone could fix this it would be appreciated.

United States

F-Zero X Expansion Kit could probably be tagged as Expansion/DLC. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest the same, or ROM hack (Nintendo pls that's what it is).

Frikkinfriks14: Thanks for the response. I'll continue this discussion with site staff, but I'd like to point out a few things that are largely my opinion. I'll send you a tweet in advance if we're going to make changes. Not sure right now.

This post probably sounds slightly antagonistic, but I'm just trying to explain the pragmatism from my perspective.

I personally do not want the main portion of this site to contain a bunch of "real life" type races. The thing that was accepting is like right on the boundary. Fastest 100m dash, fastest Rubik's Cube, and fastest time to chug a 2L of soda are greatly outside site scope, and start to become extremely difficult to moderate sensibly. Video games fit a set of constraints which much of the community has some generic agreement on what's okay and what's not. The "tabletop" category was added essentially on a whim without much discussion. I personally would've said no, but someone else didn't which is also a valid opinion on the matter. I would've also rejected the game request for the physical object, but someone else didn't. This situation is directly at odds with site precedent, and will be cited frequently as a "they can have it but I can't?!?!?!" People want some level of consistency with the site. The argument "X needs a home" can be detrimental to the overall quality of things on the site. Setting bad precedent is bad.

I think the further we extend the boundary into real life things, the more diluted the rest of the content gets, and the more unmanageable the site gets overall. I have exactly zero intent to manage moderation requests for fastest 100 meter dash if that was a thing that were to be put on the site.

I do want to have some things eventually like allowing users to create boards under their profile maintained by the user. I do think we need to better isolate content so people can see what they want. Right now this is sort of handled through the "unofficial games" mechanism.

I have similar concerns with a lot of the garbageware flash games and mobile games that make it onto the site.

Quoting from an arbitrary blob of text on the about page, that probably didn't have much thought given one way or the other. Even wikipedia seems to think speedrunning largely applies to video games. It's just a word though.

speedrun.com is a site that provides leaderboards, resources, forums and more, for speedrunning.

Speedrunning is the act of playing a video game with the intent of completing it as fast as possible, for the purposes of entertainment and competition.

Racingmonster: If a super mod for one of the games wants to request it I'll add it. Use the game request form.

Blucario90: I probably meant to mark it as a mod and missed.

ROMaster2: N64/GCN games are unique enough that I don't think it's necessary to mark them as expansions. Expansions probably generally imply that you need the base content to play the extra stuff, which I guess is technically true for the F Zero thing. I also think having a single digit number of N64 games is not worthwhile. It's definitely opinion territory. ROM Hack should imply unofficial release, and expansion probably shouldn't be used for most older console games to give some level of consistency.

Thank you for the response, kirk. Should I back up all the video links and times onto a notepad just in case Perplexus gets deleted faster than expected? Also, setting Perplexus Giant to a ROM Based off (blank) will not be happening, I assume?

OK, this will be one of or hopefully just my last post about this matter, but reading what you said about the ROM Hack thing, I actually would like Perplexus Giant to just be set as Expansion/DLC and later when I add actual unofficial games based off of Perplexus, those will best fit the ROM Hack based off (Blank) category.

Idk if this is the right place to post this, but can this game http://www.speedrun.com/pma2005 be removed from the Galaxian series? It used to be a page for a collection game with both Pac-Man and Galaxian games on it, but since other Pac-Man collection games have now been split up into separate games I think this one should too.

United States

The following games are expansions:

Command & Conquer - The Covert Operations is an expansion pack of Command & Conquer Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Counterstrike is an expansion pack of Command & Conquer: Red Alert Command & Conquer: Red Alert - The Aftermath is an expansion pack of Command & Conquer: Red Alert Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun - Firestorm is an expansion pack of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge is an expansion pack of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 Command & Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour is an expansion pack of Command & Conquer: Generals Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath is an expansion pack of Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising is an expansion pack of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

The thing is, the expansions are treated as their own game with often even having their own folder or executable to launch. I don't know exactly what "Allow Base Game" does, but they shouldn't be classified in the same manner how ROM hacks are.

United States

Frikkinfriks14: I changed it to an expansion for the short term, still sorting out game guidelines over time.

PrinceRallis: Didn't look at this in much detail, just went ahead and changed it.

ROMaster2: Where do you see "Allow Base Game" ? I'm not sure what that is or does. The base game attaching has been broken forever, but it's not that crucial to anything. Handling Expansions like Rom Hacks I agree is dumb, I'll try to discuss this with the coders soon. There are a couple other "type tags" I want to add.

Thank you, let me know what conclusion about game guidelines you come to.

I've recently requested a game and it was successful but I've just realised I've requested it twice. Is there a way to remove the second request? Thanks

United States

Idea: A 'gametype' boolean for licensed or otherwise 'officially released' games. It wouldn't be important to have but nice to filter with. I can even check all the games en masse for which ones are and aren't.

Yoshi's Highland is a ROM Hack of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Psycho Waluigi is a fan game. Possibly should go in the Mario Fan Games series. F-1 Race should be in the Formula One series.

ROMaster2: Allow base game is likely just the identifier for whether a thing in that category "can" have a base game. Adding "parent games" through the site interface has been broken a long time, but previously added ones still work. =( I had wanted a way to toggle the type flags between "Shows up on front page by default" or not, and possibly individually toggled on the series pages as showing by default or not as well. I'm not sure if this code exists or not or if they all are coded to function exactly the same currently.

BritishGamingNerd: Don't worry about it.

Completely forgot to ask, can I get Sniper Elite III tagged in with the Sniper Elite series? Thanks

United States

There doesn't seem to be a whole series for that at a glance. If you want another series added, could you submit a request through the game/series request form.

Valhalla

Weird, I could've sworn there was, I must've been looking at nazi zombie army, will do.
