Alternative routing?

So I've been testing stuff and want to get people's opinions on whether they feel like there are other potentially faster route options that aren't being used in the run right now.

The one that I'm trying to test right now is after getting Spider Gloves. If you go southwest out of Eden Maw you can head back to Which Path Will I Take, and if you can do the magic pixel jump on the spikes there you can head up to Abstract Bridge.

I'm honestly just not good enough to do either route optimally/consistently enough to get good testing data on which is better, but has anyone else explored this option? Are there other spots that people feel are super awkward/unpopular in the known runs that could give other timesaves?

I think it's a 2 pixel jump actually, but yeah I've been planing to try and take the low% record and then start using the spike jump in any% if I can get it consistently (unlikely). I was able to bet Mariobatalijr's any% run from 'Hollow King Transformed' to the blue platform on 'Abstract Bridge' by less than a second using the spike jump in practice. My 'Functional Spelaeology' / 'Cognitive Resonance' jumps where bad and I think Mariobatalijr wall jumped a bit too high on 'Does Whatever a Spider Does', so I'm not sure what the time save would be when comparing optimal conditions.

If you get a well timed double jump in 'Functional Spelaeology' / 'Cognitive Resonance' and get the spike jump on the right, it'd definitely save time. A few weeks ago I wanted to do 2 TAS runs to compare the two routes, but PC TAS tools are quite lacking and I unfortunately couldn't even get the game to run when using them.

Anyway, hopefully you can get something out of my ramblings.

Hm, potentially. I'll splice something together to see if it's quicker when I'm less bedridden.

For anyone wondering the exact route, I made a small gif of it so you can see it in action. https://imgur.com/a/N7qLq

Also, turnipp is right, from my testing you have 2 pixels to the right of the character model to work with, since the death box is the actual pixels of the character model, but the pixels that are used for detecting if you are standing on the ground are actually 2 pixels wider to the right side, not sure if they are also to the left.

I've created a segmented run for both routes and have put the two videos side by side here:

The runs aren't perfect, but it might give you an idea for the time save. As you can see the alt route is not a major time save and is more prone to messing up, so I'd say it's not worth going for unless the game routing becomes incredibly optimised.

Orangecrix told me about spike entry a while ago, and this route is faster, but not worth it at all, comparing how much time it saves to how difficult it is. This is also at the end of the run, making it even less worth it.

I think turnipp is right that the need for it depends on optimization and competitiveness. As more players get closer and closer to one another with their PBs even the smallest timesaves will become relevant. I was hoping this thread could be a conversation point for all of these little route variances as opposed to strictly about the spike entry.

For any%, I think we're pretty close if not at fastest possible for now (until a useful clip for any% is found), though small optimizations are always being found. Though 100% could possibly use some quickening up. I might make a video about it sometime in the future if I find the time.

I've started experimenting with 100% routes, although I don't think the one I've got up for my current PB is optimal. It's a really interesting and underdeveloped category right now, it seems.

Yeah, watching your 100% runs kinda makes me want to give 100% a go. I don't know if I try to make my own route or if I steal yours, but could be fun.

I don't know if my route is actually good or not but it certainly is fun and I like that I frontload pretty much all the map searching/item collecting into the first run. The second run after Lose is literally a straightforward any% with high route after Leap of Faith to get the last few bags and rooms. I have a poorly written google doc for the route I can polish up and ship your way, although I worry that the route might be slow enough as to not be worth anyone's time.

Or... you could route 100% Glitch with Alt+E exploiting ;)

Mario and I spent a lot of time on routing 100% and not everything we came up with made it into a run. Unfortunately some stuff is too hard (atm). 100% can be sped up by utilizing death warps for sure. The hard part isn't not dying as much as avoiding other bells.

Hi, didn't check the forum before. So i'll join the conversation. Going Bottom after Spider Gloves is definitly faster (about 1.3 seconds). I only found out after checking myself that other people already tested it as well. ;-) Took the non Steam time down to 4:42 with the route change today (I'm going to submit it after i finish writing this). Here is my own comparison video with timer:

There is another small improvement in You Have to Start, but it's really difficult and only saves around 0.3 seconds. I don't know if anyone else has found this yet but here's the video:

I also experimented with 100% and was able to beat Mario's time. I haven't uploaded the run yet, since i wasn't satisfied with it. It would be very interesting to compare my route to yours, so let me know if you are interested in seeing my route. In that case i'll upload my current PB (if I can still find it).

Cheers.

I'd be interested in seeing the route you came up with, and maybe we can work together on the best route possible. I did that with ZZKer to create the route I used, and I think an extra person would be great on making a new, better route.

Yolo Category Extension

Due to new runs from new runners, a Yolo subcategory has been added to 100%, Extra Spicy any%, and Extra Spicy 100%. Yolo any% will remain as a separate category (as opposed to subcategory) for now since I'm unsure how to merge it without having to copy all runs by hand. Let me know what you think i
