Community translations

I haven't seen this addressed anywhere, but I just want to toss in my support for community translations being okay to use.

I was watching mrtiger's run during his 12 hour challenge (unfortunately I was only able to catch the VOD, time zone issues) and maybe I got the wrong impression but it seemed like he was struggling with the English text and that there was some doubt as to whether applying the translations would be a legal modification. In the absence of there being "official" translations into other languages, I don't see a reason why we shouldn't allow runs to be submitted using the community translations.

edit: There's an in-game menu for translations but it's fairly out of date. The official Grim Dawn forums has a translation forum that has more current versions and instructions for installing them. My position is that modifying the game files solely to add a new localization should be okay.

Well i wasn't struggling on the text boxes, my english is quite decent. I just got some viewers that wanted me to speedrun Grim Dawn since i started doing Titan Quest... and since they are playing Grim Dawn alot they asked me whether i could change the language to german. So yeah, i also had the issue that the "official" translations ingame didn't work (maybe just after restarting the game) so i did the challenge on the english version.

So basically the discussion we had in the stream was whether fan-made translations should be allowed or not, because you normally play the game on a unmodified official release (which would not apply for the fanmade translations).

Since it is "only" the translation it might not affect the run itself, so maybe this could be allowed. The only thing i'm not sure about is... can we make sure that all fanmade language patches do have the same amount of textboxes? It might be that one language has less textboxes so the amount of menuing through dialogues is less (especially at the "continue-buttons" it could be. I guess we can't check every fanmade translation so we might deal with a small risk by allowing the fan-translations.

These points are just what we discussed in a stream (and another stream i made) plus some own thoughts. I personally don't mind either decision, allowing or banning them... but i don't think i should be the one making it ;)

Ah okay, admittedly I was just skimming through the video so I only caught bits and pieces of that conversation. Always glad to see more people getting into running this game though, this place gets kind of lonely when it's just me talking to myself. :)

I hadn't actually thought about there being a potential issue with number of text boxes. The bigger issue though like you said is the positioning of the "continue" buttons, because it's never in the same place and if you accidentally click to refuse a quest instead of accepting it you have to do the whole dialog again.

Of course now I'm having second thoughts about allowing people to patch their own files into the game. I'm assuming there's some sort of vetting process that happens for the ones that are approved for the in-game menu but I'm not 100% sure about that. Crate seems to be really slow about adding those though, the ones in-game are still for 1.0.0.2 and some of the quests have changed quite a bit since then.

Long story short, unless it becomes an issue the status quo is probably fine.
