Is Gens an acceptable emulator for speedrunning ?

Hello ! I was wondering if the basic version of Gens was acceptable, because I want to speedrun Sonic games and I've always been using Gens to play so far. It's easy to record and it doesn't require much RAM compared to Fusion (I have a shit PC). I'm new to speedrunning by the way. Thanks in advance for your answer !

You’ll need to check the rules of the games you want to run. Or if it’s not in the rules you’ll need to ask the mods of the games.
As long as the game's rules doesn't state that the emulator is banned
I’m not a fan of this approach. Emulators can sometimes be kind of obscure and for smaller communities they may not even be aware a certain emulator exists. I’m in favor of always double checking with the mods if they don’t specify a specific emulator/version to use. The emulator in question may be new and untested (not saying Gens is, just an example) so the mods or community might but have had time to verify it’s accuracy. That’s why I like double checking first.

I've heard Gens is banned for TASing for Sonic 2.
I've heard Gens is banned for TASing for Sonic 2.
Gens is not an allowed emulator for doing speedruns of Sonic 2 due to a variety of reasons including it's inclusion of TAS tools. However, it is still perfectly valid for TASing the game - it's currently accepted but not preferred for TASing Genesis games (Bizhawk is preferred).

If you're looking for more information on TASing, I'd suggest heading over to http://tasvideos.org as that is where all of the information is held.

Gens is not permitted for the Classic Sonic games and you will have to use Fusion, yeah.
