Why is there no IL leaderboard

Please forgive me if this is a dumb question, but why is there no IL leaderboard for this game? You guys may have already discussed this before but Im just curious as to know why. Thanks.

It would be difficult and time consuming to moderate 32 separate levels individually. Plus there would be like 100 WR holders in levels like 1-1.

actually, 1-1 is one of the few levels that can allow for a decent amount of variance in times at the top--i believe without l+r the max is r12, and in runs most people get r00-r03ish. the main problem with 1-1 is that most people would just play 1-1 a few times to get a relatively low-skill time and then never submit another time, so there would be a massive amount of runs and basically all of them would be below-average.

also, you'd get a situation for warpless runs where people could submit all 32 levels as il times, which would mean the il leaderboard would be constantly inundated with hundreds of runs that are just part of longer categories.

so yeah most of it is just that it would be ridiculously hard to moderate, and it doesn't help that most levels are relatively simple and straightforward, even if you end time before level transition, so that framerules wouldn't matter. so the pattern of a tiny few high-level runs, and then a massive wave of low-skill runs would also apply to the other levels.

i don't mean to speak on behalf of the mod team, but that's just my understanding of why smb1 doesn't have an il leaderboard.

That's pretty much it, yeah. We did have ILs (outside of 1-1 and 8-4) a number of years ago and removed them. So did the other NES 2D Mario leaderboards for similar reasons.

We did have people who would throw down a warpless time and submit every IL in the run with it. That's 33 submissions, from one person, all at once and it started to get out of hand. A large portion of the ILs don't really provide much value to have leaderboards for anyway and it leads to burnout from the mods.

I don't play the game, so my opinion isn't important, but I think ILs would generally be a good idea. I also believe that it would bring attention to the levels that nobody cares about and that new techniques could be discovered because of it. So, if what I say comes true, the theoretical perfect time of the warpless category could decrease. But, every good thing has a bad side. Here the bad side is that the moderators would have too many runs to check and that's why it's impossible.

eventually it'd be pretty much impossible to improve any times because most runs would quickly become fully optimized plus, most of the biggest glitches in smb1 have to do with ending the level, and that isn't important in ILs. other than those, most glitches wouldn't even be useful so runners would end up just regularly playing a lot of the levels

What if you could count not the whole level (with the "bus") but only till the flagpole/castle/etc. for IL?

@amseager that's what I thought

Anyone is free to run an IL board elsewhere if they so desire and run it however they desire. We can't stop you from doing that. Make a website or use a Google Spreadsheet. However, it seems that these types of projects are lucky to make it a few months before the creators decide "this is a lot to keep up with and it kinda sucks" after the novelty wears off.

Just to say that I did it, I'll ask the rest of the mod team if they are interested in putting ILs back, but historically, it's been a very definitive "no" since we initially removed them.

I'm running one rn, and it's not a lot to keep up with as i'm only doing a top 10, although it would definitely be a lot to keep up with if I was just doing every IL completion anyone has ever done.

@RedHope 100 Wr for 1-1, LOOK AT 1-1 as fire mario, THERE ARE LIKE 50 WRs FOR THAT! 1-1 IL would have same amount (or so) of WRs!

Does anyone thought that IL's like 1-1, 1-2 or 1-3 are too short? Maybe world IL's could be better (the IL would end the first frame that Mario touches the X-4 flag)

unrelated but here is a spreadsheet that I'm working on for IL achievements (lightning, pl8-1, and tas 8-2) editing and research help is appreciated.
