When and why did you start speedrunning?

Got into speedrunning because I always like to play games as fast as I can

I got into because it's a way of getting to know your gaming peeps.

And the same reason 1-up stated. I don't like stalling my time on games. I especially hate overleveling.

I watched a lot of LobosJR's YT channel a couple of years ago and saw him do a run of Lords of the Fallen, which I owned on the PS4. I gave a run a try and posted it. After my wife and I had a baby there was little scope for sitting down in front of the PS4 or PC so I was limited to lunchtimes at work or the odd occasion in the evenings / weekends and running mobile phone games best fitted with those conditions.

a few years ago I was watching firedragon speedrun luigi's mansion, then I started watching old SGDQ videos on their youtube, so I decided to give it a whirl

I think the first time "speedrunning" as something I wanted to attempt myself happened the first times I played and beat God of War, realized I got it mastered fairly easily, and thought to look up if there were world records for beating a game like God of War quickly (and of course, there was lol). Still, it was just about beating that ONE game fast to have a world record in something.

Speedrunning as a CONCEPT (how we all know it now, as breaking/pushing the limits of a game, making ideal routes, sreaming/racing, etc etc) didn't become known to me until sometime around 2012 when I went to look up a playthrough of Resident Evil 2 on Youtube and found a Carcinogen video (probably a GDQ of some type). The fact there was a split sidebar, and he was discussing advanced tactics with the stream captivated the Hell out of me! Still, I was only just a casual observer for years and years until earlier this year I finally got over the intimidation factor and realized I have 19 years of experience playing Resident Evil 2, so why not friggin go for it?! And with REmake 2 right around the corner, what better swansong for my favorite game's "life" than to finally get a -1:15:00 run? :)

(Other games that got me into SR'ing: Ocarina of Time, Super Metroid, and all manner of Mario titles).

One day, I was looking for a gameplay of GTA 5 on YouTube. I found a video of ToriksLV. I was impressed with his perfect speed. Then I forgot everything. 2 weeks later, I found a speedrun made by Hugo_One, still there, his maneuvers impressed me. I originally loved doing things quickly too. I wondered; "Would I be able to do the same... Challenge accepted". And now I have a speedrun.com account.
