New site layout - Amendments #1

I'mma post in here again just in case the old thread is no longer valid for feedback. Note I'm also gonna address things this redesign didn't touch up on that the old design had issues with. such as missing features & bugs.

My biggest complaint about the redesign is the bloating compared to the old design. the old design already had issues with way too much padding being used (subcategories especially) but the redesign seems to take that issue and apply it to basically everything. In addition to it not bringing anything new to the game or fixing any of the issues we faced before.

ILs have grown in size by about 25-50%, meaning games with a lot of ILs like MHXX have scroll-times way longer than they have any right to have. the Top-bar has grown 10px for no reason, Categories now take 500% more space, so you have 2 rows at 3 categories, despite the (empty) tag being gone to save space now.

Themes: Everyone wants them, few can actually use them effectively. New Layout's colour-theory is great, you have the backgrounds of the top-bar, and the labels as splashes of colour in the dark/white themes of the page, love that part - but then we have:

  • Link Colour being the exact same as the Theme colour, which means dark themes are unusable because links now lack contrast.
  • Use white as your theme colour and you now can't distinguish links in regular text, such as the rules or forum threads.
  • Usernames are illegible on certain theme colours (give the name a border)

It'd be great if we had at least a little more control over what is coloured how.

Bugs:

  • (?) User needs to set Theme colour for background to apply
  • (?) User-Theme background does not apply to any theme-less page other than profile

Profile:

Games on Profiles seem more orderly now, great improvement there, but again with the bloating, but this time on the buttons for misc/obsolete. is there a reason for putting them on a seperate line instead of making them share one? (idk, put them above the line, that would work?)

Moving forward, for Profiles, can we have some more... order?

When enabling Obsolete runs, it'd be really nice if the obsolete runs were clustered below the current PB, sorted by category, so to speak.

Multiplayer runs, as of right now, look messy at best. it'd be cool if the names could be stylized like the @ if no name is attached (dark, smaller than regular text, place the names in as few lines as possible below the category)

Long Category names, IL-names & categories with lots of variables, could we get a similar solution as with the above? just something more ordered, instead of just slapped right behind the category name.

IL page: More sorting options please? right now it's sorted by first run of game, and only that. if you run Final Fantasy 10, then 8, then 7, then 15, (we're just going to assume they all have ILs) then you'd end up with a weird unsorted list, with no reference as to why they're sorted like that to guests. (dates aren't shown on the IL-Page)

  • Add Alphabetical Sorting-Option for IL-Page
  • Possibly figure out a solution to multiple non-obsolete runs in one category/level confusing guests?
  • User-option to keep IL names to 1 row by cutting them off with "..."

Bugs:

  • Sometimes breaks (see Tron_Javolta's IL page)

Leaderboards

As said above, categories take up way more space than before, despite the (empty) thing being gone to save space on empty categories. same goes for the menu, it just expanded downward to the point where it doesn't even display the moderators on page-load.

Subcategories have the same issue they had before the redesign, and that's the clash for space with the Filter & Rules buttons. they both share 50% equally, even tho the latter only needing 30% at best. this leads to subcategories getting split onto 2 rows when they could fit on 1, and this leads to the other issue the split leads to: "what's this related to?"

Anyone who would see 2 rows where the first row is neatly connected to each other, and the 2nd row only has one button would assume the 2nd row does not belong to the first, and does something different, here it would be better to either make sure they stay on one line, or box them together instead of visually parting them from each other.

IIRC it was said that the 000ms thing not showing up would become an option, or would still show now if it's 000 and other runs have ms. this is still not the case and causes order to be interrupted.

additionally: would it be possible to have the numbers be perfectly aligned? if a run has 10min, and another 8min, the 10min run's secs & ms are a bit offset.

additionally additionally: could the same thing apply to names & flags? them not being aligned makes it harder to read and the flags break up the read-flow.

Bugs:

  • Variables that don't affect the currently viewed category, but affect Full-Game, are shown in the Filter dropdown regardless. so when multiple variables with the same name are applied to full-game categories, this leads to confusion as to which of them is the correct one.

  • Subcategories that are split onto a new row are missing the left border.

IL Leaderboard:

Nothing new to say here really, just: did the IL rows have to get bigger? see MHXX for page-size madness that shouldn't be as long as it is.

Maybe consider allowing ILs to be split up or new Leaderboard pages to be created for better sorting.

For all the "japanese" options, like cover, names, etc. you cannot add ILs with just katakana, hiragana or kanji. please fix, this is especially important for games that are only released with japanese text. otherwise one would have to rely on other means of listing them like translating them or using latin text. (as in, the same issue for why jp names got removed from games)

Edit Game Pages:

Looks more ordered, great! Game types thread link is still wrong, tho.

Tags might need a small re-ordering, put Genre into one column by itself and the other 4 in a 2x2, it's seldom that a game has more than 1 engine, or more than 1 dev & publisher / series, but the majority of games have more than 1 genre, so that field usually grows, and that results in weird empty space.

Variables don't show what they're assigned to anymore next to the name, so with more complex setups you now need multiple clicks to make sure you're editing the right one. (e.g. if you have 3 categories, but something only applies to 2, you need to create 2 duplicate variables, but you can't see which is applied to what.)

and the most infuriating thing that plagues me since setting up MHXX: Moving anything or adding new stuff to the top of the list. is it too much to ask for a "insert here" or "move to spot x" button?

TL;DR:

All in all, a nice redesign. BUT the site in general needs a lot of polish & QoL updates to make use of it. As it is right now, it's like you'd put makeup on a 50yr old, the face might look like 20 now, but the body is still clunky & cracking.

It is a good foundation for a more modern site, but now you need to show that you actually mean it and push to not only make it modern visually, but also functionally.

There's still so much QoL that was planned & prototyped, but never made it to us users yet, such as timing & sorting settings per category.

The Feedback thread is full of great ideas that seemingly go unheard, and the highscores debate is still ongoing.

I hope we'll see more steps in the right direction in the future. like, actually using the patreon.

I'm plugging my css edit here again, because IMO the site, as is, is too bloated to use effectively. https://hastebin.com/ipigecejal.css

when i edited a run to retime it, i put 5 in the ms section, and it came out as 005 on the leaderboard, whereas before it wouldve came out as 500

Why not do what Twitter does where in white theme it's a white panel with black text and the reverse is true for dark theme. Then, the accent color only affects links, or important things like links. Twitter accent doesn't effect every instance of text on the profile and there's a reason why. Also why is the order of things in Edit Game (such as Variables not being after Categories even though they're related) and the list of the left side of the game page like Discord, Guides, ect, still not in a order that makes sense? It should be Discord, Website, Guides, Resources, Forum, Statistics, Follow Settings, (rest as usual). That way the list is order by relevancy and not (what appears to be) random.

The new layout is amazing, but i noticed that the in site splits.io display of splits do not show golds anymore, hopefully this would be something you guys could consider fixing!

Hey Pac,

Someone's already mentioned something like this, but you might have a better time if you manipulate the colors via HSV.

If you set the Saturation and Value to a range of acceptable values, you can just adjust the Hue and have roughly matching colors.

Thank you for making a site redesign that isn't total butt like YouTube is fond of doing and like Reddit is in the process of doing as we speak.

All of the social links under avatars are gone, also, hitting "More..." at the bottom of edit profile does nothing now.

I agree with others saying that the day/night theme colors should be set individually in the theme instead of the site trying to guess what color looks good based on the single color you're able to set now. It would be nice to have all the color options back from previously, instead of just one color. Transparency too; it's nearly impossible to actually see any backgrounds with a solid color board in front.

I don't understand something. It's really basic but the implementation is so confusing.

Right now, on my user profile, I have one setting to change a colour. This one singular setting controls 1) how others see my profile and 2) how I see the site.

Why are these not separate settings?

Thanks, Pac. Themes being back looks better.

What exactly are the ideal resolutions? Dunno if it's a site bug re-implementing or something, but some of the old ones I made scale improperly now.

"Do people also want the background positioning / scrolling / foreground options back?"

Most important are the positioning options, since without them it's hard to get backgrounds to look good at various resolutions / devices.

I can live without the scrolling / foreground, though they were fun. Some themes used them to make some very cool effects, but yeah it's true that many used them poorly.

As for transparency (I assume you mean the transparency of the panels) I prefer the new 100% opaque look. But if people feel strongly about having the option, then I don't mind at all.

New site is lookin' great, thanks!!

Also (not sure if this is new, but I think it is) the "Show misc. categories" toggle on profile pages is an excellent addition!

@Pac You wrote 'Theme backgrounds, logos, and icons have been added to the new layout', this is true for when editing the game themes, but when editing a game series theme, there is no field for uploading a logo or an icon. It would be great, if that could be added to the series theme editing page, too. So, that I don't have to do it individually for each game.

Now if you could set "body.dark .panel" background opacity and color.... that would be cool and dandy.

Apart from one of my leaderboards I've tested so far, I've been having trouble reimplementing my wallpapers. They're not loading, and I've tried a few things like using a .png as opposed to when I originally used .jpg files.

EDIT: Want to note that other things haven't been loading either, like custom logos. I can't really tell why some of my themes have gone back to working "fine" while some aren't loading at all despite appearing on the edit theme page.

Also, has anyone else felt it's hard to read text with night mode. I am a night mode user and ofc it being tied into being able to sometimes see themes, if they aren't broken, means it's necessary for me to enable it regardless. But I actually had to enable my one addon, Dark Reader, on speedrun.com and it's able to better render the page for me, and I don't have to stare as long at a page to read stuff. Here's some comparison screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/TPquRe3

Theme has to have theme color set up in order for theme to actually be applied, as far as I have seen. Also don't use png for backgrounds.

Imaproshaman and Quivico like this

I can counter that by noting I had checked one of my leaderboards that had not been touched since the revision happened, before I had applied a new theme color for it, and it had loaded it's background. However, you are correct that setting a theme color seems to correct the issue in most cases.

Sorry to double post but one issue that has immediately arisen for me personally was that I had actually previously used a small tiled image to create a patterned effect appropriate to the game I made it for, but now that the theme system defaults to stretching an image out only, my illusion is completely ruined.

I'm sure this has been posted before somewhere in the thread, but I don't really agree with the lack of customisation on Light mode. Especially now that the background option appears to exist again, it's basically making Light mode the same as disabling custom themes all together, which for those of us who want to use light mode over dark mode is somewhat disappointing.

@Pac thanks for responding.

As you said the functionality is still there for the pre-made themes, i suggest the if pre-made themes were brought back that they would be located on the themes page at the bottom below all the other options and a user can choose wether or not they want one but all other theme options will over ride it. The pre-made themes can just be available to donators as normal users do not have access to the themes page and it will act as another way to entice users to donate, so they can have access to this feature

There definitely should be some sort of outline around name text. Red name on, say, orange background is no good: https://i.imgur.com/spfqc6m.png
