Category and Leaderboard Discussion for All
England

Going off of a few other threads it would be for the best to have a discussion on the way the categories are managed at the moment.

Currently there are 5 'main' categories:

Any% Classic (completing the main game without mellow mode); Any% Classic No Badges (As above but without badges); Any% (Gem grinding basically, but the quickest way to complete the game with mellow mode); 100% (Currently collecting All Flowers, Yarn and stamp gems in all levels); and another added recently of All Levels (completing all levels including S levels but not requiring all collectibles)

Now this is where I'd like to bring a discussion in to things so as to have a clear and more organised board with all the categories that people want. Personally one thing that has a bit of a sticking point in my book but I want to see what others think is the definition of 100%. Now, at the times when initial categories were made no one really had an interest in 100% due to perceived length and this led to no real care being put in to defining it, which should have been the case. The current definition for it doesn't include heart collection and therefore not requiring star rank on each level, and I'd been having a discussion about it with another runner, Torco, that this should be part of it, but we never came to a decision and also felt we had no authority without a wider discussion. However without even realising I had I changed it (which is bad to admit and I apologise) and it was a good thing marcomania pointed it out so it could be reverted. However, I am of the opinion this should be changed to require star ranks for 100%. To make the current 100% run relevant and I also think would be a good way to do it would be to have the current 100% be 100% No Star Ranks and a new category for 100% All Star Ranks.

There I think should possibly also be a drop down added like the multiple controller one to specify whether badges were used or not or whether you did it alone or with another person (though I would be more inclined to keep Co-op categories with multiple people there own thing), and this would cut down on the number of categories while still allowing current categories to be ran. But an open discussion to make things clear on how they should be done would likely be best. Comment here, then how things go forward can happen based on what is said.

Hi, i'm a new streamer who is learning the 100% run. I think that the 100% run should be all hearts, stamp coins, yarn, and flowers in all levels, because that's the closest thing to a legitimate 100% in the game.

Of course, I'm still learning the run and I haven't submitted anything to speedrun.com yet, so my opinion might have literally no weight to it. I just wanted to put my two cents out there.

Yeah it makes no sense to not collect hearts for 100% as its a legitimate game collectible that counts towards your completion, see no reason why that wouldn't count.

I'm about to start submitting 100% level runs of this game including hearts (in preperation for a full game run)... I notice the timer starts before the title screen comes up. To me this seems counter productive, because every time I make a mistake on I would have to exit the level then re enter the level which waste about 2 minutes of time. Not to mention I have already landed several runs after selecting retry... I think there should be a different starting point just for individual levels.

England

The thing then is it's hard to judge when timer starts for that, hard to accurately judge first movement (or whether waiting around then moving would count to get right cycles) or whether to start on clicking retry (which would also then require people to enter the level then pause and click retry) so this is the easiest to accurately time and manage so is therefore the best place for ILs

Can the rules be clarified more? There's some grey area I feel like, with social speedrunner mentioning in my chat that amiibos are banned, and another runner in my chat being confused as that's stated of course, no where. Ambiguity should be removed by stating on all categories amiibos are banned, and for 100%s, that mellow mode is banned as well.

Texas, USA

I was under the impression it was banned, not trying to force any rules.

England

Amiibo should be added to the description fair enough, but no reason to ban mellow mode for 100% so yeah

Can all collectibles be either taken out or replaced by 100% no-badges for ILs? Given collectibles is a misc category I think 100% no-badges has an equal chance as well, and it's not a topic of debate which is "more different", which was brought up for no-badge RTA, playing a level 100% with badges is significantly different from vanilla than doing 100% w/badges while not worrying about health, and often a good collectible IL will be 100% and have full health ANYWAYS. This idea wasn't even all mine, I simply noted that SEVERAL ILs by macormania are badgeless, and there's definitely a distinction by him, so it would feel cheap to simply get an IL WR simply by using badges.

I've heard of some stuff going on about some people wanting no-badges to be added to the leaderboards? I was disappointed to see that there was none, I really think it has its place on there. I know your argument for not adding it is because there's no enough people interested, but maybe more people would be interested if you let us showcase our runs of it (whenever I learn it, I'll be doing some) on the leaderboards, as I do know of quite a few people that would be interested.

I'm interested in running 100% no badges as well. In my opinion the runs are very different, not sure why it shouldn't be a main category. I saw it was under a misc category, but for most games it seems like misc is for non competitive or race categories. Don't feel like it detracts from anything to have it there. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

There was no decision, one mod said before that there was nobody interested in it than me, and used that to justify closeing the thread. This obviously needs to be rediscussed, as there is now obviously an interest in this category by others. We never discussed which category would be more interesting, nor had any interest in a conversation at all, and the only reason 100% w/badges was chosen was because "the game allows badges", which is a pretty poor justification imo, as saying "the game has it so we should allow it" doesn't seem to become valid when you ban amiibos for no reason. :^)

I think so too, it would be interesting to have 100% badgeless and it wouldnt hurt anybody to have it on front page. in the beginning when the game was new we had like 6-8 categories on front page because of 1 and 2 players and nobody complained :P

Orcastraw, one mod (which is me if I can guess who you're referring to) didn't decide things. It was based on stated opinions by actual runners and mods. It was completely discussed and decided and it's only continuing because you are making a fuss about it. It's decided. So there's no need to continue to go on about it like you are. Maybe there's an argument to be made if it had as many runners as something like Any% Classic, but for now nothing has changed so the discussion and decision will not change no matter how much you repeat your point

If this topic continues the way it has about 100% No Badges it will be locked, like the other topic was, as this is a finished discussion and already decided, and does not need to be brought up again

United States

So is this not gonna become a main category because you're mad at orcastraw? It looks like other people care about this, seems kinda unfair. ;;

It's not because I'm mad at him. I'm more annoyed at him talking about me behind my back than his opinion on this but that's irrelevant. This decision was made long before he got mad at me by multiple people and that is how it stays

I've already said, if you're that bothered, have more people seriously run it, optimise it more, and then there could be room for argument. Until then nothing has changed from when the decision was originally made other than complaints from people who don't actually run the game, and I explained a similar situation that occurred when that influenced opinions of people who actually ran the game who were far in the majority, we have the blank, untouched categories to show it
