Modify rules (Any%)

I have not tried speedrunning before and intend to just play smo casually. I am interested in it though, so I decided to check out the rules for an any percent. I noticed that it seemed like you could just save the game right before you hop on the electric wire at the end, and then exit the game, bringing you back to the main menu. The rules state that time starts on the file select screen, and end when you hop on the electric wire. Could you not just load it up to the point where you previously saved, and then hop on the wire giving yourself a time of just a couple seconds. I have not tried this myself, but I just wanted to put the thought out there. I hope this is fixed so that we have genuine runs, if it is counted as an any%. I have no idea if this has been brought up before though. Bye

This wouldn't take over an hour... No save files allowed.

Yeah I know Tech I was trying to test the legitimacy of the rules I would have removed it if it was accepted.

And btw for everybody else I was saying I had not tested it or anything and was hoping it was not possible but thank you that is reassuring to know that the moderators have considered every possibility

Dude this site is legit. No need to test. This is THE site for speed runs actually no need to test. Other than that the rules also state you have to start on a new file so it doesn't matter the run would be illegitimate.

The answer is no. The rules are fine.

well he was following the rules

Beat the game as fast as possible. Timing starts on File Select and ends when you shoot out of the electric wire in the escape sequence.

The exclusive First Moon Skip on version 1.0.0 is banned. If you want to run on 1.0.0, submit your time to the “True Any%” Leaderboard on http://www.speedrun.com/smomemes

Video proof is required for runs that have a time of 1:20:00 or better.

Use of Amiibo, 2P, and Assist Mode is banned.

tell me where it says you have to start from a new file

Don't be a smart ass. It doesn't say new file in the rules because that's obvious.

I'm just pointing out his point that everyone seems to have ignored: it doesn't say "from a new file" but everyone says it does for some reason and completely dismiss what he said because of it. It's not that hard to change the rules a bit:

Beat the game as fast as possible. Timing starts on starting a new file and ends when you shoot out of the electric wire in the escape sequence on the same file.

Considering this is one of the most popular speedgames I don't see why we can't afford to make the rules a little more specific.

It's completely unnecessary. Because the mods are not stupid enough to accept a run of 5 seconds, and most people who are running the game are smart enough to not submit that time.

all I was saying is that the rules could be a little more specific. I thought it was pretty clear that I was not trying to do it.

People try to bend rules all the time and I was just trying to point out a flaw in the wording of the rules so that they could be fixed. It would minimize the number of illegitimate runs submitted by people who noticed the flaw and make the jobs of the moderators easier. Tons of runs are submitted, and tons of people are assholes.

I've fixed up the begin time ruleset to be more formal and easier to understand for all people, apologies for what it was before, Odme just decided to put something down. OpieOP I will say that we have never had a submission where someone tried to bend the rules (only those who did not know of the rules in the first place aka first time runners/blind runs), but I do agree the ruleset had to be reworded.
