if you're talking about what pixel of the stair, you're supposed to land on the first pixel

1-1 Flagpole Glitch (DISCLAIMER: This is not practical to add to a run until trying for roughly a low 4:57) See youtube.com/watch?v=ucBAwdS3YB4 for full tutorial

You must land on the 3rd block from the top on the first pixel while not holding "B" - on the first frame with mario in the "running" animation (as opposed to the jump/falling animation), you hold only right (not "A" or "B"), then for exactly the next 2 frames, hold "B", then do a full jump on the 3rd frame (as shown). Hold all inputs until the jump is completed. By the time you reach the flagpole block, you will need to release "A" and "B", and hold "left" for exactly 3 frames (as shown), then jump on the 4th frame. If you do the first "jump" half of the trick correctly, you will clip into the block assuming you do a full jump, even if you mess up the "second" part. If you do not clip into the block, it means you messed up the jump.

Frame counter will obviously be different depending on your pace - as long as you hit the first pixel on the block, it doesn't matter if you do a full or partial jump. In order to "save" the framerule, you will need to be 4 frames from perfect on the coin pipe section, which means that some "380"s will not be fast enough to save the rule. Credit to runner "Sockfolder" for finding out exact inputs for an RTA run.

Just out of curiosity - do inputs after the flagpole jump (frame 1309 on gif) matter?

@darG move to the left

@darG You need to release left immediately after you jump, but jump height doesn't matter - you can hold down a for the whole time or press a for one frame, it doesn't matter. The "perfect" pole inputs are L,L,L,L+A. With this, you would need to release left immediately after that last frame, but you may keep holding A

@Mruns05 just to let you know you should only really be doing fpg in low 4:57 and 4:56. It's fine though if you are just learning it, but doing it in 459/458 attempts is just dumb.

No, he shouldn't be learning it at all. It is a huge waste of time to learn a hard trick that you won't use for a few months and perhaps years. I would advise to stop learning fpg, and spend all that time wasted on fpg on things that will help you forever, such as 380 underground in 1-1, the precise jumps in 1-2, etc. GL on future runs :)

@YourFreeChicken imo it's best to mess around with it even before it's necessary so you can get a feel for it, and save 379 undergrounds with fpg PogChamp

@eddiecatgaming, exactly my thoughts. as you get more comfortable with/understand precise inputs, it's not the worst thing you could do to try it. an impromptu fpg has definitely kept me on pace in at least 5 runs outta 1-1 with a bad underground, and a few times in 4-1 (4:57 attempts, but still). Learning keeps you from burning out lolol

Yeah learning fpg for fun is what I did like a year ago. It was really satisfying to do, and it prepared me for low 457 attempts. I would like to agree with @Darpey though because these is no real use for it until you have a decent 457 time. Good luck on your endeavors!

I'd fundamentally disagree with you here - the reasoning for what you're saying is for pure learning efficiency. If you're approaching life with this rationale, great... but why are you playing mario AT ALL? you could be working and earning money, or learning another language, or doing SOMETHING "productive".

The reason people play this game is for FUN - The whole point of getting a completed run, then a 5:30, then a 5:15, 5:10, 5:02, then THE MIGHTY SUB FIVE RUN - is self improvement and fun. It doesn't really matter. If you find learning FPG fun then imo that's just as valid as trying to improve your time.

That being said, learning FPG before you have at least a 4:58 or 4:57 is sub-optimal for the best time/improvement ratio for improving your mario time... but who cares? if it seems fun and cool to learn FPG go for it. Otherwise you shouldn't play NES Mario in the first place, since it, also, is suboptimal for life looking through that lens. If you think it's fun to learn, go for it. Clip into those blocks.

Cheers.

I've been an unpredictable temperamental ass a few too many times for that. I think they're in decent shape at this point on mods to workload ratio.
