The Games & Users Update - Feedback & Bugs thread
2 years ago
Scotland

No bugs to report but I do have feedback, nothing new really but just to add my 2 cents

  • Everything is too small.
  • Everything on the right-hand side is unnecessary information which clogs up the page.
  • Hiding subcategories in a drop-down menu is bad UI.
  • Game pages are just ugly.
  • Game forums look okay but again, so much useless information on the right-hand side.
  • Was anybody asking to be able to see the amount of times you've looked at a game's page?

Change for change's sake is never a good idea. If it ain't broke, don't break it. I appreciate the thought I guess, but it's a really bad job, guys.

^ I just noticed that as well, actually lol. I honestly feel I cannot overstate how bad a redesign this is.

There seems to be a lot of hating, largely justified, but I want to start with some positives. Firstly I'm really glad that the site now has a unified theme. Whatever your own opinion on the theme change is (I personally think it's fine), it's definitely better to have one theme throughout. The leaderboard layout itself is fine, the page just needs to increase in size by about 50%. Showing game stats and recent runs on the main board page is a great addition, showing the forum posts alongside that however is not so idea for many communities. I think that would be best solved with an option. On to my complaint...

Alright look the "Games Followed" box on every user is actually ridiculous, I know others are complaining about it but I have to pile on because this never should have happened. This should have at worst an option to disable it, and should really be opt-in not opt-out. Ideally it probably wouldn't exist at all, seems like pointless information and it is quite surprising to me that it's even being tracked. Seriously though who thought this box even needed to exist in the first place??? For the majority of users the page is already far longer than their PB list just because of these sidebars scrolling off the screen.

@Tutterey While I agree showing the same info twice in the same page is a bit ridiculous, the Statistics page is as of the writing of this post the only place where you can see the WR progression graph, so it still has a reason to stick around for a bit.

Maybe they could make it so that the stats info widget doesn't appear when on this particular tab? It'd make it seem a bit more fleshed out.

I like the statistics in the about section on our profiles, but they seem pretty slow to update. My last post before this was 34 minutes ago: https://files.catbox.moe/quh94v.png

Similar to what @Walgrey said - not only that the games' names are wrongly capitalized, user names in the new "about" section are wrongly capitalized too.

@hahhah42 I’m not sure where you’re seeing a “most recent post” tracker. Were you thinking of “last online”?

@Pear look at the number of posts in the "info" section and the number of comments in the "about" section, they don't match.

Ah, got it, thanks Oreo.

Here's something I just noticed, when a mod deletes a comment on a run, it only deletes the content and not the comment box itself. The poster of said comment can then edit it back to what it originally said. As pointed out before, at no point is a moderator made aware of any of this happening.

I understand it's not cool to shit on somebody's hard work or whatever, but come on, this is ridiculous.

would be nice:

  • disable comment section over your runs
  • remove unnecessary stats (ie, leaving only first run / total run time) on your page, make it cleaner overall, as you've mentioned on the blogpost.
  • manual game sorting in either of the boxes
  • a way to edit the fontsize on our pages or the games we moderate

p.s - stats when? rest of the update is bearable.

There's a lack of consistency between how the leaderboards and the Recent Runs pane display relative time (leaderboards say my time and Kaeldori's were set 2 years ago, Recent Runs say 3 years ago). The Recent Runs pane below also says that Crrool's old PB was 6th, when there have never been any more than five runners on the Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales any% leaderboard.

Thanks for fixing the truncation of my name on the leaderboards!

@GarfieldTheLightning It appears the "recent runs" section show all runs, even obsolete ones. You can see it shows @Crrool twice in the Any% category.

Another thing about the "Recent Runs" widget: While I appreciate that it highlights both full game and IL runs alike (finally sending some love towards IL's way), there's no way to distinguish which is which other than taking a guess when looking at the final time.

Distinguishing full game runs vs IL runs is one thing (since the disparity in times should be a dead giveaway), but there's no way to distinguish runs from 2 different ILs other than going to the actual run/IL leaderboard to check, which is a mild inconvenience.

In this example, the runs marked in red are all ILs that belong to different levels:

Different platforms for games being hidden away under a dropdown is a big no for me. I worry this will really hurt the visibility of any platform that's not the default. (Edit: might happen only when there's more than 3 platforms? Still a big issue imo)

I generally like the changes. Thanks for the hard work guys, I know it's hard rolling out updates and quickly bugfixing and still having people in this thread be like "THEY DONT LISTEN TO US!!!! IM GONNA DELETE MY ACCOUNT!!" lmao. Everybody saying "it looks bad" is not providing feedback at all and is not being helpful.

Anyways, I'm gonna list my thoughts, many of which have probably been mentioned before;

  • Please make more use of horizontal space, and the font bigger.
  • The dropdown for leaderboards definitely is clunky and I personally think a new solution is needed altogether. It's also weird that some of the options of the dropdowns are larger than the dropdown widget itself.
  • I agree with changing the place identifiers; having 1st/2nd/3rd back would be nice, also having the 'th' back on all the other places.
  • Bump up the threshold for number of subcategories before collapsing, and maybe include a label for what that subcategory is
  • The stats - I think the stats separated by a / need to be distinguished more, its a little confusing to look at. I don't think a / is really indicative of the relationship between the two. Maybe parenthesis? And I'm not sure what "Game Added"'s time format is set to, or if there's a setting for it, but I thnk changing 2017-09-30 to "30th of September, 2017" is more user-friendly.
  • I agree with showing the name of the community website and I think it's an important detail
  • For games that do have a Misc. tab, at least Cuphead doesn't have the tab indicate that it's a dropdown, and I think that should be changed
  • For main boards, the order of the dropdown categories is "Full Game", "Cat Extensions", "Levels", but for the extensions board it's "Base (?) Categories", "Full Game", "Levels"; I think the order should be standardised and that a better name for Base should be used - something like "Main"? I'm not sure honestly, and I don't know if Base has been used before. The main thing is the order.
  • If it doesn't already, the News should sync between main board and extension board. Or at least give the option to. I know that might be convoluted.
  • I would like the option to include moderator stats on the user page for games that I used to moderate, but don't currently, and perhaps a "Total runs reviewed / time" stat as well
  • I don't understand the visits stat
  • I would like to be able to hide specific games from these stats (for e.g. I'd like to hide Seterra from my Games Run stat)
  • Many of the user stats seem unnecessary, "Comments Likes Given", "Comments Likes Received" for e.g. - these also seem to have incorrect grammar.
  • Covers are still too small
  • The comment section on a run - I like this feature - but it needs a re-design. Feels weird that this page is so much wider than the rest of the site. It also feels weird that avatars don't appear. I don't know what you guys have tested, though

Things that I think look weird but I'll get used to (so I don't think you should fix for now):

  • Moderator name locations (truly a niche and unimportant thing for most users)
  • The usernames alignment on boards
  • Right sidebar instead of left sidebar now

Things that I would also like to see: (additional)

  • Guides / Resources syncing between a board and it's extensions (or linking to the same place)
  • Custom ordering of games on my user page, so I could show off maybe what I'm most proud of first. I understand that this section has likely not been touched yet in the re-design.

Thanks again guys.

I'm gonna join the choir that this is just... completely unprompted and unnecessary. I don't think it's a matter of being used to the old version either, it's like it goes against how most websites are designed.

Beyond just moving things around seemingly at random: why is all the text tiny? It's a size (and possibly font?) that legitimately becomes pixellated/aliased at 1080p

Similarly, tiny (and unmarked as such) buttons? Like they're only visibly "separate" when you mouse over them, much like in the most recent firefox update. Just have separate interactable elements be clearly outlined!

(also... tiny game art for some reason?)

All the added info boxes to the right is stuff you would find in their own neat categories through the buttons on the left before, and the buttons that were once there now seem completely unimportant. So the intention was to make non-leaderboard information more clear, while ironically making it more obscured by having it be "scrolling feeds" instead of separate "subpages" you can click into

And the thing that I think is the most subjective, but still makes me feel like an alien: isn't it the standard everywhere to have buttons to the left, "main info" either in the middle or right? Wikipedia does it, youtube does it. I think adding the new "feeds" to the right could work if it was much smaller, such that you had LEFT-important stuff buttons MIDDLE-leaderboard RIGHT-feed in some proportions where the leaderboard was clearly the main component

The "games followed" section feels incredibly stalkerish. What purpose does showing how many times I've viewed a certain game page serve? Scrap it or add an option to make it private.
