Basic Questions for a Vdeo

I am making a video, and the only place I could think of that had access to a bunch of different speedrunning communities, in one place, was this amazing site. Please try and answer as many questions as possible :thumbs-up:

  1. What type of game is the hardest, in your opinion. (Platformer, 3d, etc.) (You could also name a game, if all answers pertain to that game.)
  2. What is the hardest part of a speedrun? More than one answer if you like, but ranked in order. (Pixel Perfect Jumps, Multi Pixel, Memorization, etc.) 3.Hardest type of speedrun, try ranking if possible. (Any%, 100%, Glitchless, Blindfolded, etc.)
  3. Reasons you would not want to start a speedrun. (2 optimized, 2 hard, 2 long, 2 short, etc.) Try ranking please.
  4. For an optimized/satisfactory run, what is an average number of attempts? (1000, 3500, 5000, 10,000, etc. What ever number you think is right)
  5. Any of your ideas that would tell someone how hard your speedruns are.

  1. short and/or 2d runs. they often require many many pixel and frame perfect inputs (smb 1 for example).
  2. not failing.
  3. depends on the game. you could say "blindfolded" is hardest for every game but thats a boring answer.
  4. if i dont care about the game im not running it. if i care about it then it doesnt matter if its optimized, hard, long or short
  5. depends on the run length. the shorter it is the more you will reset.
  6. the runs i do arent really "hard" they just require consistency which is hard.

@SioN For number 3, what is a non boring answer? Do you think categories like 100% are (more challenging) than categories like any%/low%?

United States

@antipacifist That depends on the specific game you’re running.

Finland

@AntiPacifist yeah like i said depends on the game. you cant say that all 100% are harder than all any% runs for example. in some games any% could be harder than 100% because of some super hard ace credits warp or something and then in some other game 100% could be harder because it has a lot of hard tricks while the any% does not. same goes for all categories but blindfolded is essentially the same in all games, while some blindfolded runs are harder than others its most likely still way harder than any "normal" category.

and somewhat offtopic but sometimes the any% is the low% so they arent really comparable in terms of which one is harder

Thanks, That just gave me a great Idea.

  1. Rage games. The mechanics of those are usually intentionally frustrating and they are designed to be ridiculously difficult. This obviously makes doing speedruns near impossible. I've done speedruns of Getting Over It and Sexy Hiking and while it is very annoying to learn, it's extremely satisfying when you finish a good run.

  2. For me, it's nerves. I really struggle to keep calm when on a good pace, especially when I've been grinding a run for a while. Different games have different tricks which could be considered the hardest part of a run. Frame perfects are not hard, especially on lower framerates.

  3. Shorter runs are usually more difficult because the short length means that it is more feasible to implement harder strategies and reset for perfect RNG/gameplay.

  4. There are several reasons I would not run a game. A toxic community, a boring run, or a low skill ceiling make a game less appealing. Personally, I also don't like long runs.

  5. This varies from game to game and person to person. Long games usually require less attempts but more willpower and dedication. Most of my runs took ~200 attempts, but I probably have over 5k attempts at my main speedgame and over 50k across all games and categories I run.

  6. I don't understand the question.

  1. What type of game is the hardest, in your opinion. (Platformer, 3d, etc.) (You could also name a game, if all answers pertain to that game.)

Generally 3D platformers, depending on how buggy they are it's absolutely insane how price your walking angle, mashing speed, etc. have to be.

  1. What is the hardest part of a speedrun? More than one answer if you like, but ranked in order. (Pixel Perfect Jumps, Multi Pixel, Memorization, etc.)

Depends on your level, but at the highest level it'd be things like pixel perfect / frame perfect actions.

3.Hardest type of speedrun, try ranking if possible. (Any%, 100%, Glitchless, Blindfolded, etc.)

Blindfolded, requires an absolutely insane amount of work.

  1. Reasons you would not want to start a speedrun. (2 optimized, 2 hard, 2 long, 2 short, etc.) Try ranking please.

Generally because I don't like the game or don't like the things required to speedrun it (like if a beginners route requires a frame perfect trick or something, or if I just straight up don't like the game).

  1. For an optimized/satisfactory run, what is an average number of attempts? (1000, 3500, 5000, 10,000, etc. What ever number you think is right)

This has no answer, differs per person, per game. Generally runners are never satisfied with their runs unless they're TAS level, and even then most people arent'.

  1. Any of your ideas that would tell someone how hard your speedruns are.

@Merl_ @Sizzyl Thanks for the great answers! Let me rephrase number 6... Take your main game, and pretend that you are talking to someone that wants to start running the game. First, lets say there is a beginner goal in the game (like smb1 has sub 5, and super mario flash has a perfect lvl 1, these are usually the first goal people have when they start the game.) What would you rate it from 1-10, or take the WR in the game, could you rate it's difficulty from 1-100? If not, why, can you not put a number on these things? I would love to here your opinions : )

French Southern Territories

Sub 5 is not necessarily a beginner goal lol. It can take over 100 hours to get it. Anyways,

Judging by attempt counts in PB videos, getting the world record in my main speedgame, Mobility, is roughly equivalent to getting a low 4:57 in SMB1.

A good beginner time for the game would be a sub 9 minute run (world record is 6:35)

For putting a number on the difficulty, I'd give it a 90/100. Basically I think that my WR is stronger than ~90% of WRs for other games on the site. But that is a very baseless and bad estimate. It's really hard to quantify things like this.

@Merl_ I do not doubt the toughness, that is why I was asking the community what they think about there games. Thank you for your feedback : )

@AntiPacifist For certain NES games, Overswarm made this chart setting comparison points for higher performances across them. I assume they must include obsoleted runs in the percentages, since otherwise sub 5 in SMB1 wouldn't be anywhere near 98%.
