Farming, good and bad sides

In this post, I would like to touch on a very controversial topic for the src community, namely "Farming" for some players, farming is one of the types of competitions, for someone it can be useful, and someone shouts that it is a terrible thing. Here I would like to discuss this topic, weigh all the pros and cons, and finally get an answer to the question of whether farming is harmful.

Pros:

 • Fun Competition
 • Something To Do
 • Sense Of Accomplishment
 • No Harm To Communities
 • Brings Activity To Games
 • Gives You The Experience Of Trying New Games

Cons:

 • Post Farming and Game Farming
 • Setting Up Leaderboards For The Only Purpose Being For Farming
 • Sometimes Hard On Mods
 • Not All Runs Are The Best Quality

Will add on to the list when more ideas come in.

(There also isn’t really a purpose for this thread but whatever)

Prolly should say something instead of nothing.

As someone who farmed back in the day and is pretty active with the community, it really depends on the person who is doing it and what type they are doing.

For example, fioresa is someone who farms wrs, however he always retimes his runs when submitting, runs categories with at least a little competition, and always has consideration to the mods and is more than willing to wait when more than a few runs get submitted.

Now of course there are the people who spam submit a thousand runs with no time stamps and having them all put at 0.001 and whines when it hasn’t been verified in 3 weeks, and I’m confident those are the people who people see when farming and give the community a bad wrap, which is understandable.

And for a lot of people, they substitute quality for quantity and people generally don’t like that, as it shows that you aren’t good at any game so you runs a bunch to compensate. But to be fair, it’s the runner’s decision when it comes to that, and as long as they aren’t stupid and an asshole about it, it really shouldn’t bother people.

The bottom line is it depends on the person who is doing it and how it is done. I say it is fine for the site overall (minus mod farming because duh) if done correctly and not interfering with any one game or community. And while I do see the arguments other people make and actually do agree with some, I don’t see an unhealthy behavior being performed at all.

At the end of the day if it doesn’t hurt anything run what you want.

I personally believe that timestamping the video is the most important part, as mods should retime the run regardless of it being retimed by the user or not (I'm talking about you @Reni ). If a user submits a load of runs that are all in order and he doesn't die between those runs I really dont mind as well.

When I'm submitting a lot of runs, I always timestamp, as from personal experience its hella annoying if a person dies multiple times and I need to input the start frame multiple times.

Altho I sometimes get impatient, I agree that its rude for the mods to tell them to hurry verification especially when I dont retime my runs. I only asked once for moderation for Leap Day, a game with IGT (which I had input) where I had a seperate video for each run and my oldest pending run was 3 weeks old, but I dont think it really counts.

With that said, please stop bitching about farming, a small group of people doesn't represent the full community.

i see no reason to farm runs with running "normally" instead of farming you have all the same pros without the cons from acts list:
Pros: • Fun Competition • Something To Do • Sense Of Accomplishment • No Harm To Communities Cons: • Post Farming and Game Farming • Setting Up Leaderboards For The Only Purpose Being For Farming • Sometimes Hard On Mods
@SioN You might see no reason to farm runs, people might see reason to farm runs, people are different and you have to accept that.

Also how do you quote someone

The pro to run/wr/game farming is that you end up running a lot of different games you probably wouldn't have tried otherwise. While I was farming fgwrs, I had to push myself out of my comfort zone in order to find new games to run, and I ended up having a lot of fun running those games.

However, a lot of farmers, especially those who are near the top of the leaderboards, don't really benefit from running new varieties of games because they spend as little time as possible running/playing the game, so they can spend more time running other games. Most of the time, when a farmer submits a run to a game I mod, it's a run of a single level, and it's usually close to last place, or a trivial tied world record. I genuinely don't see the fun in that.

That doesn't go for all farmers though. Comrade_S has been running Mobility a lot lately and has put a lot of effort into the game. He's improved his PBs multiple times, gotten feedback on how to improve his runs, and submitted times to many levels, including hard ones that take practice to learn. It genuinely makes me happy to see another person enjoying the game. I guess another pro of farming is that it can bring activity to games that would otherwise be very dead.

I agree with @Merl_ one of the main advantages of farming is the opportunity to learn a lot of new and interesting games that will later be fun and enjoyable to play. As for Mobility, I will continue to improve my runs once I get back from the hospital.
