So I watched some speedruns and decided to try the game. I got it and tried it. It's suprisingly hard. Anyone got any tips? But I really want to know how to do the pipe clip from 1-2 to get you to 4-1.
That should be one of the last things you should try to learn how to pull off in this game. Since you're just getting started, I wouldn't recommend worrying about BBG, FPG or 1-2 clip until you have a sub 5:00 time.
Learning the levels and working on basic clean execution should be where you start. You're going to save a lot more time working on that than doing all the difficult party tricks. Work on those when it's time to start implementing those.
Basically what roopert said. For the first goal you should try to get time below 7 minutes, then, if you played carefully - below 6. If not - deathless run. Small steps to good success.
And remember, don't give up! This game may be frustrating, but every PB is sweet and motivating, especially when you break the 5 minutes barrier.
First, welcome! this is a great community, and a great game. It's extremely fun and rewarding to learn.
As a general rule, I'd suggest trying to speedrun this game in the following order:
- Finish the game (probably ~6 to 7 minutes)
- Finish the game deathless with safe strategies (probably ~5:30ish)
- Slowly incorporate faster, less safe, strategies to decrease your time
- Get a sub-5:00 time
Darbian's video tutorial is extremely in-depth about the game. It was made 2 years ago, and while some of it is outdated, 95% of it still holds true.
^ It is very important to emphasize that this tutorial is for a SUB-FIVE time... and uses zero safe strategies, so it's not ideal for learning the game - but I think it does help to understand how the game works.
^ THIS is a run using 100% safe strategies that can be picked up by a new player. It ends up being a 5:18 run (which is a very respectable time for a new player) - it uses zero pipe jumps, and drastically reduces any difficult strategies.
There is also a GIF tutorial post HERE ---> https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/thread/uz8f3 that shows each "difficult" trick in slow motion on repeat (gif format)
Good luck!
Also, here's another good tutorial by current World Record holder: so check it out, can be really useful!
I've been continuously grinding this game for months now, without any breaks longer than a week, and still quite enjoy the game and speedrunning it This game will... always be hard, speedrunning = hard tricc
I began just throwing Mario around the map, just clicking buttons and being like "hey guys lookit me I can clicc buttons" Then I began to take it more seriously, and started learning more and more things I started grinding more, almost daily or daily and I could handle it because it became a habit to grind the game
Here's my tips:
- At the start, have fun, no need to compete or be amazing, just enjoy everything that's happening, don't even worry about anything. You basically want to play one day, then the next day be eager to come back. That can establish a habit
- After some time, when you've gotten settled in, take the game more seriously, and start doing more of the things you really need to do to get good. While you're doing this, learn all that you can from everything (with a grain of salt), from videos, other players, and playing the game
- After a while of doing that, then you decide "hol up, I want to become a legend and get a 4:54" do everything you have to do make it possible, make sure you DELIBERATELY PRACTICE (practice with intent, pay attention, adjust from mistakes, learn things from practicing)
- You have 1000 viewers because you got 4:54 and all the people all over the internet are like "FKJLDSA;JFDSKAJF;LDSAJJ WHO IS THIS FINNA REE?"
But hey, that's just a theory
A GAME THEORY
thanks for watching
Also never give up, no matter what, because you never know what will happen
Man. I didn't know speedrunners were this helpful to others. Thank a lot to every one for you. Really appreciate it. These are going to be some pretty long months :)
I think the speedrunning community is the kindest community ever for my observation. Good luck in the way of speedrunning ?
Any% (NTSC) runs below 4:57.000 must now fulfill additional requirements in order to be verified.
- The run's full session must be included in the submission description.
- For emulator runs below 4:57.000, some form of input display must be visible for the duration of the run. A hand-cam or input
