What would an online category look like?

As someone who plays this game only online, I'm interested in having an online category to speedrun. My instincts tell me that many people would be opposed to such a category because of the volatile RNG (connection errors, lag, unlucky lobbies, etc), but I would still be interested in talking about and ultimately establishing an online category.

Just to get the ball rolling, here is an idea for an online category that I think would be fun.

Goal: Obtain 1,000VR Rules:

  • You must start with a new save file.
  • Timer starts when select your first lobby (Global or Regional).
  • Timer ends when your VR shows at least 2000 at the end of a race
  • You must switch lobbies every 250VR, so you race in at least 4 separate lobbies.
  • You can play Global or Regional, but not with friends.
  • Timer does not stop if you decide to prematurely switch lobbies for any reason.

Thoughts?

If you think it'd be fun to try out, you should give it a try!

One thing to note regarding speedruns that revolve around online features is that, in the distant future, it's possible that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (or any game for that matter, just setting an example) will lose access to its online service as the matchmaking server gets shut down. Because of this, it is hard to give consideration to any category that utilizes online, at least for the leaderboards here.

That aside, the fun of speedrunning is coming up with your own rules. Don't be discouraged of trying new ideas out yourself, regardless of if the category is worth giving a leaderboard for or not!
