I've been watching speed runs for a few years now including events like AGDQ and after watching AverageTrey's recent world record, I decided that I want to begin speed-running. 

I'd like to stick to games on the Gamecube and the N64, with my first game being Digimon World 4. Starting this summer (college life is rough) I hope to start practicing! It's going to be a while until I build confidence to share runs however.

Now, I have a big issue. I'm very competitive and can't stand the thought of sharing any potential finds or watching other runner's videos. To be successful I understand that it is crucial to interact with other members of a game's community. What do you guys do to circumvent these feelings?

hey welcome to the site haha hope your runs are successful and yeah you don't need to share them if you don't want to :) on about shearing stuff well I don't have those feelings because I love to share what I find maybe because I am not to competitive haha like recently a bad and good thing I guess ^_^ :), but hopefully some one can answer that question for you :) good luck :D

@chryoyo I'm surviving, if anything. I'm at that point in the semester where I barely have enough motivation to get work or studying done on time. 

As for the N64, I actually just picked up a console and 6 games for it. It was +$100 for the whole package, but to have a sizeable portion of my childhood in my possession makes young-me ecstatic.

I am also competitive. and sharing is hard for me too. what was harder, verifying the WR run that beat mine. I went over every frame of that run. damned if i could find something wrong.

however, now I have motivation to run the game again. and watching his run gave me ideas for new time saves. so sharing can help you get faster.

also, just being able to talk to someone who understands what you are talking about is satisfying.

@kyten44 True that. Sharing and talking about a game is like friends sharing interests! Communication is how communities like these grow. 

The feeling you describe is the one that scares me. I honestly don't look forward to that situation happening to me. Maybe looking at it through a lens where I can benefit may help me avoid being overly competitive?

Maybe if you know the community from the game you run, you are able to share easier :). 

Personally, I love to share every find and see how my finds are used in other runs, and being part of making a route of the game.
