As someone who was once in your shoes, I recommend using a keyboard if you’re playing on emulator. If you’re dead set on using a controller, then buy an adapter instead. They only cost like $10 and allow you to use an official NES controller for input.

It's my understanding the DS4 on a bluetooth connection offers some of the lowest input delay for pad on PC.

Every USB adapter I've used for NES has been bad and would advise against it unless you're dead set on using an NES pad.

If you're in love with the NES button layout and DPad, 8bitdo's N30 is on par with a DS4 in terms of latency.

I agree with @Komrade though, they're all terrible, and it's mostly the inherant USB latency that's at fault.

Valhalla

Yeah on PC keyboard is the way to go if you want the lowest latency.

Just one wrinkle to keep in mind with the keyboard though, it can allow for button presses that can't normally be done and some communities may ban it. It's not a problem for most games though.

What button combinations other than d-pad left+right or up+down normally can't be done? Most emulators restrict those combinations by default.

Left + Right is usually the one that matters. And yeah, most accurate emulators do restrict it, hence why it's not a problem for most games. Sorry if that was unclear.
