Worst Game to Speedrun?

Disney/Pixar's Up is a mess to run solo

Pays de la Loire, France

geometry dash lol there no way to improve your time

United States

@Bregermann Are there a lot of bugs? @OuaisMaisNan For games with no time variation there really should not be any runs for it.

Modern mobile idle clickers would be freaking atrocious to speedrun. And games like Clash of Clans too, oh boy...

@therekafire Puzzles and Dragons too. Each attempt you need to splurge massive amounts of money or time for those gambling machines to get those god level monsters!

Brazil

Autoscrollers such as Starfox, it's not a bad game but oh boy it's a meme to speedruns.

@Kromer autoscrollers make for bad speedruns, but when there is variation you can get better times. Some shooter auto scrollers can be hard as hell, like Gradius III for Arcade where not dying would be incredible.

@Silo_Simon Having memes for a game does not make a game bad. You should state more specific reasons. A better reason would be that Mario Party can give you horrendous luck on some stages which can ruin your run and there is nothing you can do about it.

Most .exe games since you just hold right until the ending. Also games that take 10+ hours to complete will most likely bore the watcher before it ends.

I feel That the GTA series ( Mostly 3 and san andreas ) Because I think they are just boring to watch.

  1. Games that often require precise inputs, but lack the ability to be "cheated" through glitches or what-have-yous. Games that are notorious for shoddy controls, such as Silver Surfer on the NES, as well as Bart vs. the Space Mutants (also NES) would qualify.
  2. Luck-based games that require favorable RNG manipulation.
  3. Simulation games that throw in RPG-like mechanics that involve building stats before you can move on. Ironically, stuff like The Sims games on portable systems would make poor speedruns.

Shmups, i guess?

I love the genre, and it involves a lot of repetition and skill improvement, but it's mostly auto scrollers with some games that do allow you to pick different routes, but again, mostly autoscrollers.

Though i guess one could play the game not caring about losing lives and even losing or making a continue to get more bombs to kill bosses faster if the game allows for it.

Basically, not caring about scoring or 1CCing a game, just being careless at some points to do more damage and finish the game faster.

Valhalla

tbh worse than shmups are VNs

@GoldenGemGames Not sure what you mean by .exe games. Could you clarify? For those super long runs I watch them in small bits. Maybe 30 minutes a day or so. No way I could just sit through 10+ hours. Finished watching a 5 hour Xenoblade Chronicles X speedrun this week that way.

@Matthew, I have not played that Red Dead Redemption, but skimming through it did not make me feel like it is that bad. It also seems active with several runners.

@Thebestaro There are worse choices than GTA.

@JDogindy 1 .I highly dislike games with poor controls, one of my most hated games is Battletoads (NES) for that reason. 2. Oh you mean like Swords and Serpents for the NES where your beginning stats are relatively important and you have to "roll" for them? That would be really irritating to have to do that for each attempt. 3. RPGs pretty much require grinding for stats. The trick is to find out to do it fast!

@SilentStorm shoot em ups can have their place, but they do not tend to be very exciting due to their auto scrolling nature.

@Komrade yup I think that genre may be the worst. Pretty pointless. What enjoyment could be had from having text fly by and only a couple other inputs like up or down and confirm for the entirety of the game? Those visual novels are supposed to be read...like a novel.

Portugal

I guess it depends if the Score-Attack games have objectives or things to unlock, in which case it can be about you 100% by unlocking everything with the lowest amount of deaths possible rather than scoring.

For example, pinball, everyone knows that a lot of pinball tables and games have objectives or missions to do, right?

And if you complete all of them you enter Wizard King mode where as a reward for completing the "storyline" of sorts you get a special mode where the table looks different and everything gives you a lot more points.

I can see a pinball speedrun being just trying to get to Wizard mode as fast as possible and really not caring about score, though it would require a lot of skill and probably be boring to many viewers, even if you ran something from, say, Pinball FX3.

Has anyone mentioned Mario Party yet? Think about it: the entire run is mostly RNG, you have no control over what the AI does, AND the game's meant to take a long amount of time.

Anything that isn't Game Dev Tycoon.

RollerCoaster Tycoon is probably the worst game ever to speedrun. At least if you try to beat it how it is intended to be.

It's literally impossible to Speedrun since the Goals are bound to the ingame time (Mostly 3 Years which is about 2hours 30 Minutes). Most of the time you can finish the Park-Goals in the first Year so you would sit around for another 2 Hours doing nothing. The basic game has about 30 Parks, so you would have to do 200+ Hours of "gameplay" and your only time improvement would come from navigating fast through the menus to select the Parks.

@Famicom Tom and Gerry is not one I heard of as being bad before, but sloppy play controls and bad collisions can make things really suck. For speedruns your other points are on target. @SilentStorm Score Attack is kind of interesting, but speedrunning a score attack is not typically what is done. Might be interesting depending on the game? @LuckyLovesChuChu I agree Hearts sucks. What would a speedrun for that even be? A single game? @finnaboing Mario Party does seem like a lot of RNG. Think it was mentioned. @TheMadWasp What is bad about Game Dev Tycoon? @Vultus That sounds like a great contender for the top spot. My brother loved Roller Coaster Tycoon when it came out too. About 185 hours of wasted time doing nothing for each attempt sounds nuts!
