Hey everyone ! I am new as a speedrunner and I tried few games. This evening I wanted to try the famous wall glitch with the guard on A Link To The Past. The fact was that I recorded something and I don't know if it is normal to have this situation (And if it's an unknown situation, maybe someone will be able to use it ? I don't know.).

To explain few things, I am using an Emulator : Emulator : Higan v106 Version of the game : A link to the past Japanese version V1.0

As you can see, this was on a new run, I erased the previous try then making a new one, going out of the bed, trying to go outside the house, then I realised that I went to the basement of the house. :D Can someone explain what happened and how it is possible to have it ? I am not using anything on my Emulator, using a normal controller (PS1 controller with only one key - one input).

You can see what happened on this YouTube link :

Thanks in advance (And sorry if I've made English mistakes) ! :)

To be honest I have never seen a run where someone warps from inside Link's house into the wall. While the emulator could be glitchy and allow this, the reason you are in the basement is because every dungeon and underground area is on the same plane. So when you clipped the wall you entered that large plane, which brought you into the basement instead of the castle, because the castle is in another area of the plane. That is a very weird clip though, so I don't know for sure. But from my little knowledge of ALTTP that's my explanation.

I’m not super knowledgeable on the glitchy side of this game, but I know weird things can happen in this game if you press 2 opposite directions (up+down or left+right) at the same time. Normally this isn’t possible on a SNES controller without breaking it, but in emulators with other controllers it can be possible if a setting isn’t disabled.

I don’t know about Higan and where this setting may be, but it could be that that setting isn’t enabled and you accidentally managed to register 2 opposite inputs at the same time.

I’m just tossing out ideas though, I may be way off.

You had armed EG (exploration glitch, the trick that lets you get hit through the floor by the blue guard) by doing the jump/save, and instead of continuing on, you started a new file with EG already armed, when you jumped out of bed, it put you into EG on the secondary EG map (Link's house is on a second map from which you can't reach anything else, and you crash the game if you wander too far.)

This happens every now and then to people messing around with EG. To be safe, you should tell your emulator to do a hard reset before starting each run.

Thank you all for your answers ! :) I thought that it wasn't the problem because I deleted my previous try before starting this one (Then I thought that it was going to erase all the data). But now I can't understand. Thank you all ! :)

It's a RAM value, and not something inherent to the file. Hard resetting the emulator/console clears the RAM.
