about the "no gun in inventory"

It's whatever the mods decide, I can only give my opinion that I think this ruling is unnecessary and give my reasoning why. We can argue semantics but me personally, what knife only means to me is that the knife is the only weapon that may be used as a weapon/deal damage. What other weapons are in your inventory is irrelevant. If the gun is never fired then it's fine. As stated previously, yes you can still stair skate with the knife but its a different story with Claire when the flashlight is out which the majority of stairs in the game are in sections where the flashlight is out.

As it is a speedrun, I was under the assumption we may use any time saving tricks/exploits as long as it doesn't go against the category description, in this case having the knife be the only weapon you use to deal damage and not firing any ammo. No disrespect to Soulless_Persona but you ask what knife only run allows you to keep a gun in your inventory. I've checked a couple other RE game's rules for knife only/low% and none of them explicitly state you have to box your gun as soon as possible and cannot have it in your inventory, they generally state only the knife may be used. The reason that people decide to box it as quick as they can is usually for inventory reasons not because of some ruling. Look at some RE3 knife only runs. You can get through half the game with a pistol equipped if you wish to because inventory does allow you to without losing time boxing it and you don't even really need it up until that point. Yes you can deem it silly they have a gun out for a knife only run but that doesn't discredit it. If that's the case those should have been rejected.

The difference here is that the gun actually provides a purpose and its strictly movement based. I don't think that is enough to warrant this ruling. There hasn't been this rule explicitly stated before so I just don't get why is it a thing now all of a sudden.

I dont see why there is any issue with a weapon being equipped during the run for quick turning or stair skating(you can do both with nothing equipped, a wasted of a slot.). Its something you start with and if they dont touch a box. itll be on them anyways. Forcing someone to waste time to put it in the box is odd. I dont use the box until main hall after grabbing the valve, would that be too late?

Just gonna throw my opinion out there.

Not sure I 100% agree with banning a gun for stair skating purposes. Seems a little nitpicky, but if that's what the majority want, then I support that.

Second, this isn't the first time I've seen a run be rejected due to a rule that.... wasn't in the rules. Not trying to kick down whoever created this category. Mistakes happen. But I think before launching any new categories in general, there should be a peer review process. A moderator (or two) looks over the work of the super that setup the boards.

We can't operate successfully with someone solo modding the board setup, and then turning around and rejecting a run because they failed to add something to the rules. Once is a mistake, more than once it's a problem.

So going forward, it would be appreciated if someone that creates a category please ping some other mods to overview your work, please. We're a moderation team. Let us be a team and have your back on this sort of thing.

With that being said, we're in this for speed. Seems silly to me, personally, to ban a gun from being used for the sole purpose of exploiting the aiming animation like is done in every other run. Especially if said rule is pissing off the majority of people that would actually run it. That should kinda tip you off that this isn't a good idea, but I digress.

So this is why I will not run this game:
None of us mean no offense to Crazy or his run but it is something that all of us are not for since it is not needed in the run what so ever.
1. Obviously a lie, or misleading at best. A mod on here already said they may not agree with the decision which most likely means they were never asked or never expressed an opinion.

 2. The fact that Knife only/low%, which on every other Resident Evil game where it is an option is in the main category, is not in the main categories on this game. Yet, a category like NG+ OOB, combining glitches and infinite weapons is somehow deemed more worthy of being in the main categories.

 3. Another misleading statement/question:
What knife only run allows you to keep a gun in the inventory?
Answer: Resident Evil 3 and the pistol is allowed to be equipped whenever for e-dodges since the most optimal place to pick it up doesn't occur until after the city.

It's a misleading question because if you're going to ask a question like that, then please make sure the answer isn't on a very obvious knife run and has a very clear example.

 1. Statements like:
I want to add, all of these rules are arbitrary.
and
if you guys dont like it. That is fine, I understand completely but those are the rules for the boards that the mods decided
(I assume you were trying to type, "If you don't like it, get out"? Even if you weren't, you basically said that in the next sentence. I'll explain.)

So, mods get to sit around deciding arbitrary rules? Why is that a thing? Shouldn't rules be decided by...I don't know...the runners and community? Did you even ask them? You're currently getting a bunch of feedback which seems to say a rule like this doesn't make sense but, "Nah, we like our arbitrary rules better cuz reasons."

I'm sorry mods, but your JOB is to serve the community, not make "arbitrary rules" (Which are your words, not mine) which aren't even discussed or communicated to the community. Here's a thought. If a rule is arbitrary to you, then maybe it should A) Not be a rule or B ) Be discussed and decided on. Instead, you just reject someone's run cuz, "Whatever, here's an arbitrary technicality."

Oh, and instead of having sympathy for the runner, why don't you have compassion for the community? Ask them, reach out and be transparent with the results. If "most of the people said no," name those people. Name those people who also agreed. If you can't be transparent and just tell the truth, and use common sense, then you don't deserve to be a mod of this, or any game.

And until I see some compassion for the community from this game's mods, count me out.

We may have made a misstep here and we are currently working out a solution for the rules at hand for this category as well as future categories. We're learning from our mistakes and working on making things better for the community of this game. Apologies for the current situation, but honestly everyone's feedback is greatly appreciated. We should have the rules organized for this category in the next few hours, we'll keep you posted :)

Hi all,

First off, the entire team would like to sincerely thank you all for your feedback. It’s extremely valued, and important. While we can’t always find a solution that makes everyone happy, we do care about what the community thinks, and pay attention whenever there is unhappiness with the rules and the state of a category.

While not always an easy job, we agree, the moderation role is that of a volunteer that’s meant to serve the community, and we take that seriously and with passion.

This topic was brought up today in the moderators discussion. For quite some time, at that. Everyone on the team got to voice their personal opinions on this, and while it wasn’t unanimous, we cast a vote. The result of this vote was 6 votes for allowing a gun for use of stair skating only and 2 votes for disallowing it. Of the two that voted for disallowing, one of the votes was for allowing it in the inventory (just not to skate) and the other was mostly in favor of boxing it all together.

Most of the moderation team is in favor of allowing a gun/skating. However, no shots may be fired. The result of a discharge from your gun would be grounds for your run being disqualified. This includes the croc, which the grenade must be used for instead (as stated currently in the rules).

This is not set in stone yet, as we would like to give the community one last chance to voice their opinion on this. If most people are okay with what's been suggested, we will move forward with revising the rules. At which time, we suggest anyone that’s had their run rejected due to the prior rules, to please resubmit. So please share any last thoughts you might have on this topic.

With all of that said, we would like to apologize to the community for any confusion or frustration this has caused. We are taking measures within the team to make sure this doesn’t happen again in the future. This includes gauging community interest on categories, as well as rule suggestions.

Speaking personally, I do not believe any game should ever be dictated completely by a subset of people, in terms of rules. Moderators are here to serve the community, and make sure runs follow agreed upon guidelines. Going forward, there will be a peer review process and all moderators will give their input, as well as get community feedback before a category is launched. As it should be. So please accept our apologies on this, and even more importantly, please let your final thoughts on this be known before the rules are revised.

If you have any questions or concerns about this, please don’t hesitate to post.

Grenade for Croc is more than fair, IMO. That makes it strictly about the combat, and doesn't restrict movement whatsoever. I'm sure some people would like to shave those 3 to 5 seconds off of the Croc with the gun, but it's no biggie; hardly a detriment to the game/category.

More importantly, I appreciate taking what we said into consideration.

Appreciate the review on this situation first and foremost and also appreciate the mods for discussing this. I agree Stairskating with the gun while not shooting any ammo (including not shooting the croc) is great. Using a grenade for the croc is definitely not a problem in my opinion. <3

The folks running this game is what we are all here for. I apologize for being combative earlier in this thread, and honestly elsewhere in the main boards as well. I won't lie, @silentkaster made some points that hit me hard, literally thank you for that post. I've always been about making things work for the community and I've found myself being more argumentative with you all in this game so far. I'm going to work on that. Not that I won't disagree with things, but I promise that I will take a better look at what you guys are asking for and why before I spout off. I found myself agreeing with you guys while arguing against you on this one. It made no sense.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review this category with us. The most fulfilling part of watching our community evolve has always been having everyone be heard to reach a result that benefits the many rather than few - I feel we all reached this here.

The revisions are more than fair IMO, I hope to see more of us working together like this to grow our game and continue make it fair and fun for both newcomers and veterans alike.

Happy running, everybody! <3

Although I am not for the gun in the runs but I shouldnt have spouted at like that regardless to everyone. I apologize immensely for it and it should have been discussed further of it once the situation came up. Wish everyone happy wishes in their runs.

Furthermore,I put @crazygamingdayz Claire run back into the process of being verified until the rules are done. The Leon one's will still be rejected due to the Croc.

Much love to all

Do i have to rush a box the second Im able to or can I drop the gun off the first box i go to? I dont use the gun to stair skate or turn.
