PS1/PC

Hey guys,

I just picked up a copy of Tarzan for PS1, and I was wondering if there's some sort of difference between PC (emulator?) and PS1. Of course could be many people don't own the original PS1 copy.

Cheers.

Cool to see some interest in this game. There is a PC version of the game that most of us play on because of faster loads. I don't think there are any other real differences, except for a lower framerate on console.

Pc doesn't come with music :( but yea I'll race ya on ps1 (assuming the disc works i haven't tried mine yet) also feel free to join the discord .... link is somewhere

PC does come with music!

The real reason people are saying the PC version doesn't have music is because most pirated versions of the game have stripped out the cutscenes and music files. The legit PC version does come with some loading time if it's run from a CD (still a LOT faster than console versions). However, the loading time is quirky in the sense that if all the cutscenes and soundtrack have been loaded, the next playthrough will have next to no loading. Basically, to set up the game for speedrunning, one would need to play through the game in its entirety before starting runs. I ripped my game CD to an ISO at some point, which eliminates the need to play through the entire game for the loading times to be fast.

Edit: I've tried to get a hold of Jazzy, as he has run both PS1 and PC. He says can't remember particular differences outside of loads being much slower.

Ah, figures...in that case wouldn't it be worth it creating a separate category for PS1? But if not, that's okay, then I'll just have to deal with being last xD

joelnir made me aware that there are filters that you can use to view runs from a specific console. I'm not sure if consoles should be separated into their own subcategories for this, it's kind of redundant with the filter, but subcategories make the distinction more clear.

I'm a N64 only Speedrunner, trying to obtain the most WR N64 Speedruns simultaneously held by 1 person. So separating the consoles would DEFINITELY help me out because although I can use the drop box to separate them. My speedrun profile will always say 10th+ on Tarzan (N64) even though we played different games technically speaking. It would also give juggernauts of the Tarzan community, China comes to mind, more ways to play and compete on this game.

You bring up a valid point. Even though the core of the game is the same between N64, PS1 and PC, they do play out differently in various ways. I also like your argument that splitting the leaderboard up between platforms is likely to spark more competition on the PS1 and N64 side; that would be great.

I think the only real argument against this is that it'll get messy with 2 categories (any%, 100%) and 9 subcategories for each (easy/n64, easy/ps1, easy/pc, medium/n64, and so on). The reality of it is that most categories would end up vacant or not worthy of being taken very seriously.

I honestly don't mind setting up the leaderboard like this, but I'll direct some other people to the post before I get to work on it.

Edit: I'm stupid, I've split it up in a more sensible way which TheGreatestRoman pointed out to me. While I was at it, I changed 100% to "all letters/maps", the coin requirement has simply made it too high of a barrier for entry.

Leaderboard looks great! Thanks for the fast response and action. Learning the route now and will have a run up soon. Taking coins off is a huge plus imo, when I saw the coins as a requirement I instantly didnt care about 100%. All maps/letters seems reasonable though.

Hey everyone, I was wondering whether there was any reason there wasn’t a ps2 category? Obviously the console has FDS and would effect load times etc. What are your thoughts on creating a separate category for this system?

Hungary

As far as I'm aware PS2 only has Untamed but I might be wrong

New Zealand

I'm referring to playing the ps1 version on ps2 using fast disc speed. Would this be a possibility of opening for players that want to do it that way? Thanks

Hungary

i am not a moderator of this game but i'm pretty sure it would count as a ps1 emu run if you count additive/subtractive time for loading times compared to original hardware

Random note: In addition to loading times, the PS1 version also runs about 6% slower during gameplay (confirmed with side-by-side comparisons of the first 2 seconds of the game). Even with a TAS, I am only able to get about 1:15 on the first level, but the PC record is 1:11 (about 5.6% slower).

At first I thought it might be from lag, but I think actually your movement speed is just a bit lower.

Hungary

windows 7 or less PCs have the fastest ingame speed. windows 8/10, n64 and ps1 have around the same, slower ingame speed, while n64's loading times are a bit slower, and ps1's ones even slower than that. loading time is the same on all pcs regardless of OS i believe)
